Is it better to speak or to die?
One interesting thing to me in season 1, is how much els background acting implies she has a crush on Dustin rather than Mike, and what that says about her agency within her relationships.
With Mike I think she’s grateful to him and likes him because he’s nice to her, but most of their ‘romantic’ scenes come out of her lack of understanding of the world, and have to be instigated by Mike (this is absolutely not Mike hate I love that little guy). But when he’s not doing something noticeable or engaging around her, she doesn’t really pay attention to him. And a result of this, all their intentional romantic scenes feel forced to me. They’re both performing their idea of conformity. But with Dustin she’s constantly staring at him in the background, more often than not if nobody is talking she’s looking at Dustin.
This scene is the biggest example of this to me because not only is she staring at him, she looks away like she got caught when Mike starts talking. The only time in this season she seems to be actively engaged and aware of her own emotions, with no outside input, she acts embarrassed that she got caught staring at Dustin.
I think that’s why henderhop is my favourite el ship, because the idea of el getting a crush so bad she’s independently deciding she’s been staring at him too long and getting embarrassed, despite have no concept of romance or crushes is not only so so cute but it gives her so much agency and sense of self.
idgaf. i love how creepy and strange jonathan is. i love how he is so flustered by nancy he can't make eye contact. i love that he does everything she says. i love how he doesn't make a big deal out of caring for his brother and mom, he just does it. i love how he would rather be at home listening to music than have any friends. i love how dedicated he was to his family that he would end his relationship with nancy, the most love he's ever felt, just to stay with them. i love how over the course of the entire show he only became close with two people. i love how he is always polite but when he does lash out, it makes him nervous and stumble over his words. i love that pathetic man and his sad eyes and his awkward posture. i will always prefer that adorable freak.
rewatching s1 melts my heart whenever i see mike hes so fucking cutie with his boba eyes i js wanna squeeze him i literally start baby talking to the screen
hmmm, not sure about this one….
damn
most underrated stonathan scene in s1 is where jonathan FULLY slingshots steve across the room with one arm so they can escape the demogorgon, 11 year old me knew what was up with those two DAY ONE
i'm so fucking sad because season 1 was genuinely so so good and i can't even rewatch JUST that because i know the rest goes to shit. i can't look at s1 miwi knowing they don't get what they want or deserve. i can't look at s1 jane knowing she's going to kill herself in 4 years. the duffers have genuinely made all of the show unrewatchable
