I honestly had such a fun time reading The Graham Effect. From the first chapter I was already laughing, and that feeling pretty much stayed with me the whole book and the banter alone had me flying through pages like I literally hit page 200 before realizing it was the next morning. Ryder and Gigi’s dynamic is what made this book for me. They start off with that teasing, almost enemies-like energy where they act like they don’t like each other but you can tell there’s attraction underneath it all. It never felt like true enemies-to-lovers though which I appreciated. They weren’t cruel to each other but just sarcastic, competitive, and constantly pushing each other’s buttons.
Their banter had so many moments that made me laugh out loud. Things like the “Gisele” / “Prom King” exchange or Ryder randomly bringing Gigi flowers for International Eat an Apple Day were so ridiculous in the best way. Those moments made their relationship feel playful and natural. One of my favorite things was watching Ryder slowly soften. At first he comes off cocky and a little chaotic but as the story goes on you start seeing how much he actually notices Gigi and cares about her and by the middle of the book it was very clear that he was completely obsessed with her even if he didn’t want to admit it.
I also really loved Gigi as a main character. She’s funny, determined, and trying to prove herself and watching her work hard and want to be better made it easy to root for her. The only moment that made me pause was the sudden marriage situation (SPOILER) It felt a little unrealistic and had me thinking “okay… what just happened?” Graham’s reaction honestly felt very valid in that moment. It gave me slight “but daddy I love him” vibes but even though it was chaotic it didn’t ruin the story for me. Overall, this book was just genuinely fun with the chemistry, the humor, the hockey setting, and Ryder and Gigi’s dynamic kept me hooked the entire time. I laughed a lot, I flew through the pages, and by the end I realized I just really enjoyed the ride.
If you like banter, playful enemies-to-lovers vibes, and a hero who slowly becomes completely gone for the girl, this one is definitely worth picking
