No Release date: Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Trigger Warnings: Human trafficking, prostitution, domestic violence I would like to thank Kester Grant, Netgalley, and Penguin Random House for sending me a free eARC in exchange for my honest review. This is a retelling of Hugo Grant's Les Miserablés, but with racially diverse characters. I've never read Les Mis (I've put it on my TBR after I received this ARC) but you don't need to read that before getting into this! Grant kept me engaged throughout this story, didn't overload on French words, and kept her protagonist's goal in mind instead of veering offtrack into romance (which is all too common in YA)! I'm not sure whether this is supposed to be in an alternate-world Paris, but whether the reader is in a fantasy world, alternative reality world, or this world, one thing remains the same: men are afraid to step up when women's lives are at risk. Eponine (Nina) knows the leaders of each House are supposed to uphold the laws of the Court but doesn't understand why they're afraid to do so until she discovers corruption is rampant under the House of the Tiger. What follows is her goal to take down "The Tiger" and rid his house of prostitution and trafficking, completely unfazed by attractive men and leaders who are afraid to risk the Tiger's wrath. The fierce characters of color are a refreshing insertion into a White Euro-centric story, and Nina's fight to keep the women within The Court safe at all costs is inspirational! My only complaint is Nina's plan doesn't have any shortfalls, nor does she have a hard time completing her task that are supposed to be extremely dangerous, but other than Grant's story is excellent! I have one more night of work and then I’m off for the long weekend!! I’m posting a bit earlier because I have an exciting SFS session coming later but I wanted to post about this wonderful book that comes out June 2nd!! It’s so unlike other books I normally read where the troubled young girl gets saved by a prince or comes from nothing to woo a rich man, this is about a girl from a terrible life who enters an even darker type of court, the Courts of the Wretched!! I will admit the first part of the book was a bit confusing and had some plot jumping but the second half was incredible!! I loved every minute of Nina aka the black cats adventures and loved never knowing what kind of trouble she was going to get into next!! My full review is on goodreads so feel free to check it out!!
