Tony can feel his hands trembling, his sweat running down his body, his eyes burning. He can’t do this anymore. Steve is beside him, looking like a man on a mission, but Tony knows it’s too late.
“We can’t keep this up forever,” he pleads. To whom? He doesn’t know.
His body is burning, his lungs are screaming for oxygen, and Steve is calm beside him, way too calm for what’s happening around them. Tony closes his eyes, breathing in the metallic scent in the air. He wants to stop this, he has; he can feel his body giving in underneath him, the burn in his muscles more prominent, more painful.
“We gotta keep going, Tony.” Steve’s voice is like a whisper; too close, too soft. It makes him nauseous, everything makes him nauseous right now. He needs to let go. He tells Steve so, and he looks at Tony like he can’t stomach the possibility of giving up. It’s okay, Tony thinks, I’ll do it alone. He gives Steve a reassuring smile, which isn’t returned.
And he does. Tony lets go.
Moments later, when Tony opens his eyes and looks up, he can barely make up the ghost of a smile in front of him. Natasha is kneeling beside him, a glass of water on her hand. She hands it to him slowly, and he takes it from her with trembling hands. He takes a sip, then drowns the whole glass like a starving man. His body feels tired, worn out. He can hear laughter around him, someone’s laughing with absolute mirth, and Tony knows it’s done.
He did it. He lost.
“Oh man, you should see your face,” Clint says between laughs. “You look worse than when we spar.”
Tony rolls his eyes, handing the glass back to Nat, who’s chewing on some left popcorn, “I’m forty eight, I have a heart condition.”
Steve smiles at him, his eyes twinkling with amusement from where he’s still keeping his position. “Still could use some training.”
Tony groans, grabs some popcorn form Nat and throws it at Steve, who’s joined Clint in laugher. “Betrayed by my own husband, fucking great. I’m never playing twister again.”
