Here’s another post about touch deprived Kon because I love it.
Kon didn’t really have a childhood. He was basically media trained from the moment he stepped out, in the spotlight. He never got to have fun.
His time in Hawaii was very questionable as well, and he didn’t really get the opportunity to socialise properly.
But when he joint-made the Young Justice team, he was able to actually make friends. He actually had fun, actually had people his age, actually bonded with them.
In short, he was living his life.
But there was something missing. It was like an invisible force, nagging at him constantly.
Kon wasn’t sure what it could be. He believed he had everything he needed.
Then he got closer to Tim. The nagging got worse, and didn’t know what to do about this feeling. Whenever Tim was nearby, Kon would ache for something. Whatever Tim smiled at him, Kon felt nauseous.
Naturally, he strayed away from Robin.
They drifted apart, not talking much outside of work, and practically was just. Awkward.
But the feeling didn’t go away. In fact, it was worse. He felt horrible, and even the thought of Tim make him sick.
Kon eventually caved. He told Tim.
They met up at a café, and he spilt everything. He told him how sick he felt whenever Tim was smiling at him, or even near him. He told him how whenever they hugged, there was a feeling of bliss before it went away horribly. He also explained how the feeling had been there even before meeting Tim, practically as soon as he came out of the lab.
Tim listened to this with a blank expression. There was nothing that gave away how he was feeling, and Kon didn’t know if he appreciated it or not.
When he finished, Tim stood up. He walked around the table and stood next to where Kon was sitting.
“Kon. I think you’re touch deprived.”
The super furrowed his eyes, confused. Tim continued.
“From your description, it seems like it’s a physical touch you’re missing. You mentioned you felt a little better when I touched you before it felt horrible. I think it’s because the contact ends before you are comfortable, making you feel worse.”
Kon thought about this. It made sense, but Kon wasn’t sure why he was feeling that way. Tim seemed to know what he was thinking.
“If you come out of the labs, information inputted inside your brain but no real experience, I’m sure your body would be craving the touch that you have ‘memories’ of.”
“So, I need to hug people?”
“Yes. But also, touch people more in general.” Tim held out his arms. “Can I hug you?”
Kon smiled. “Yeah, sure.”
Another thought occurred to him. “Why does the feeling get worse with you?”
Tim paused. “I guess it’s because you consider me your closest friend? I’m aware we don’t really make physical contact in general, minus sparring and stuff, so your body might.. crave my touch more?”
Kon blushed.
“I know it sounds weird. But I swear it’s normal, for those with touch deprivation.”
“Okay. Can we go back to the tower?”
“Of course.”
From then on, the two of them have been more interactive. They hugged, side hugged, even held hands. They even cuddled some nights at the tower.
The feeling subsided plenty. Kon knew it would never really go away, not anytime soon, but he was very happy with what he had.
His earlier statement was retracted. He is living his best life now.
the fact that Stan and Ford's first physical contact with each other after not having seen each other in roughly a decade was
a full-body tackle
a kick to the stomach (that resulted in Stan's permanent burn/brand)
a punch to the face
and a shove (which ofc resulted in Ford entering the portal's inescapable pull)
THEN, after another thirty years apart, they pick up right where they left off with
a punch to the face
and a wrist lock takedown
I've said this before, but GOD the fact that the first time these two actually finally hugged after not having had affectionate physical contact in 40 fucking years was AFTER Stan’s memories had been wiped and he didn’t recognize Ford completely and utterly broke me to my core 😭 😭 😭
THEY WERE BOTH SO TOUCH-STARVED AND THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED
When you experience sustained, caring touch, several systems activate simultaneously:
Oxytocin (The most famous player)
Released through C-tactile afferents, specialized nerve fibers that respond specifically to slow, gentle touch (about 3-5 cm per second, the speed of a caring stroke).
These fibers are separate from the ones that detect pain or temperature and are specialized for affective touch, distinct from those detecting pain or pressure. They send signals directly to the posterior insula and orbitofrontal cortex, regions involved in emotion, reward, and social meaning.
Oxytocin then dampens amygdala activity, reducing vigilance and anxiety, while promoting a sense of safety and connection. It also interacts with dopaminergic pathways, reinforcing the soothing nature of affectionate contact.
Endogenous opioids (The body's natural morphine)
Sustained, pleasant touch activates μ-opioid receptors — the same system that regulates attachment bonding in mammals. Studies in primates show that grooming (the evolutionary precursor of human cuddling) triggers opioid release, explaining why it induces that warm, melting sensation and literally raises pain thresholds.
Release during sustained touch, can literally reduce pain perception and create that melting, relief feeling.
Weighted blankets simulate this through static pressure, but human touch amplifies it through social context and reciprocity.
Serotonin & Dopamine
Increase, regulating mood and motivation. But critically, they increase together in a specific pattern during affiliative touch that doesn't happen with other rewards.
Affiliative touch synchronizes mood and motivation systems.
Dopamine modulates reward and anticipation; serotonin stabilizes mood and impulse regulation. The co-activation pattern is unique — similar to the neurochemical signature of secure attachment rather than sexual or thrill-based reward.
Cortisol & Heart Rate Variability
Cortisol levels drop measurably after roughly ten minutes of calming, continuous touch.
Heart rate variability (HRV) — a key marker of parasympathetic tone — increases, signaling the body’s shift from “threat readiness” to “rest and repair.”
This is one reason prolonged hugs or cuddles often lead to drowsiness or a sense of grounded calm.
Why Your Body Seeks It
Here's the deeper biological truth: humans didn't evolve to regulate their nervous systems alone. We're obligate social co-regulators (our bodies are designed to borrow stability from each other).
When you're an infant, you literally cannot regulate your own temperature, heart rate, or stress hormones without a caregiver's body. The capacity to self-regulate is learned through early touch — the caregiver’s body teaches the infant’s nervous system what calm feels like.
That imprint never disappears. It just becomes less obligatory. But it remains optimal. Your nervous system still functions better, more efficiently, with access to co-regulation through touch.
The idea of “self-soothing” is often overstated in modern psychology. Biologically, we’re wired to borrow regulation — through touch, eye contact, synchronized breathing, or even the presence of another calm person nearby.
Autistic-Specific Context
Autistic nervous systems tend to operate with:
Atypical Interoception (sensing your own body's internal state) can be less precise, making external sensory input proprioceptive input (pressure, touch, warmth, texture) play a larger regulatory role.
Higher baseline arousal — the system idles “hot,” so sustained pressure or touch to reach the same regulatory effect.
Reduced autonomic flexibility — difficulty switching from sympathetic (“fight or flight”) to parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) states without external cues, making co-regulation through touch not just pleasant but functionally necessary.
For many autistic adults, touch functions not as luxury but as necessary calibration. Without it, the world feels disembodied and cognition floats unmoored from the physical self.
The Starvation Response
When you don't get touch for extended periods, your body doesn't just miss it — it enters a deficit state. Prolonged touch deprivation produces a physiological stress state. Studies on touch deprivation show:
Lowered pain thresholds and impaired immunity (studies show slower wound healing under social isolation).
Sleep disturbances, due to reduced serotonin and melatonin precursors.
Inflammatory cytokine elevation, linked to depression and cardiovascular strain.
Touch hypersensitivity upon re-exposure — because the nervous system’s threshold resets too high. (which is why when you finally get it, it can feel almost painfully intense)
This is not metaphorical deprivation — it’s measurable homeostatic imbalance. Your body interprets lack of touch as an environmental threat and shifts into chronic stress mode. Your body starts treating touch like food — when it's scarce, you become hyperaware of its absence. The seeking behavior intensifies. This isn't psychological neediness; it's homeostatic drive, like thirst.
Why Nothing Else Fully Replaces It
Weighted blankets, warm showers, pets — these activate some of the same pathways. But they're missing key elements:
Contingency: Humans modulate their touch dynamically — responding to micro-movements, breath, tension. Machines and inanimate sources can’t. Your nervous system registers this as fundamentally different from static pressure.
Social Context: Context alters neurochemical output. Your brain processes touch differently depending on whether it interprets it as social. A massage from a loved one and one from a stranger produce different oxytocin patterns. The same pressure from a machine versus a human activates different neural networks.
Thermal Reciprocity: The subtle feedback of skin temperature and shared body heat regulates peripheral circulation and metabolic cues. Shared body heat creates a feedback loop that mechanical warmth can't replicate.
Physiological Synchrony: Subconscious rhythm-matching — heartbeat, breath rate, micro-movements synchronizing — your nervous system tracks these patterns and uses them to regulate. This creates interoceptive safety that static stimuli cannot. it's measurably calming.
The Broader Tragedy
Modern adult life — especially for single, isolated, or neurodivergent individuals — has collapsed almost every structure that once offered this biological need. Communal baths, group dancing, grooming rituals, co-sleeping — all mostly vanished. Now, the only socially acceptable forms are romantic or sexual, which means when those partnerships don't provide it either, there's simply... nowhere to get it.
People who lack partners are often biologically undernourished in a way society doesn’t even have language for.
So when you seek touch, your body is accurately signaling a deficit. The deprivation is systemic, not personal failure.
You're not seeking touch because you're emotionally dependent or damaged. You're seeking it because your body is correctly identifying what it needs to function optimally. The system is working exactly as designed — it's the environment that's failing to provide what the system requires.

“Are you ready?” Remus asked him as Sirius looked at the table Remus had set up for him. Sirius nodded.
“Words, Sirius,” Remus reminded.
“Yes, Sir,”
“Good. Up you go,” Sirius obeyed and clambered onto the table.
Remus made short work of restraining his hands. He secured them in soft leather cuffs and tugged at them to make sure they wouldn’t come loose.
Remus moved onto his legs, trailing his fingers along Sirius’s side and down his leg until he reached his ankles. Sirius shivered and flexed his wrists, testing his bonds. They’d done some sensory play, but nothing to this scale.
“Do you remember your safe words?” Remus asked once he was done tying Sirius down.
“Yes, Sir. Green means good, continue. Yellow means slow down, and red means stop immediately,” Sirius recited. They both knew that he knew them, but it was part of the scene.
Remus moved behind his head now, picking something up out of Sirius's view.
“Remember, I will tap your hand twice to check in. I need you to tell me what colour you are, OK?” Remus said seriously, leaning over him, so his face was upside down.
“Yes, Sir,”
Remus brushed Sirius’s hair away from his ears and carefully slipped a pair of earplugs in, deafening him to Remus’s voice. He then slid a blindfold over his eyes, the silk cool against his skin, leaving Sirius unable to see, hear or touch. He shuddered again, eager for Remus to begin.
He started gently, a feather, Sirius thought, he could barely feel it, but he knew this was just the beginning. Remus played with the feather for a long time, until Sirius was squirming on the table.
Vanilla filled his nostrils, right before something cold and wet glided across his nipples. He gasped and bucked off the table, his back arching and wrists straining as Remus ran an ice cube across his chest. As the ice melted, it left a wet trail which Remus blew over. Sirius shivered.
A flogger came next. Remus slowly dragged it across Sirius's skin, giving light flicks here and there. Sirius was just settling into the new feeling when Remus suddenly brought the flogger down with a lot more force. He could imagine the sharp thwack it made, but all he’d felt was the sting.
Remus rained down strike after strike. Sirius’s skin was singing. Remus tapped his hand twice.
“GREEN!!!” He yelled, probably more loudly than he’d meant, and Remus continued.
Remus used the feather again. It was torture against Sirius’s heated flesh, almost too much, but not quite. He felt his cock weeping against his stomach, where it lay rock hard. He flexed his hands, reaching for Remus, but finding only air.
Something buzzed against the tip of his cock, and he yelled out, twisting violently on the table, trying to get away. The vibration stopped before returning again, and ice was placed on his nipples at the same time.
He sucked in air, panting as Remus continued his onslaught. Remus teased him while slowly opening him. The sweet burn made him rise and rise until he let go of everything, giving himself to Remus, completely. The pain and pleasure buzzed through his body until his head found peace, and he relaxed.
Remus moved quickly, removing the restraints, eye mask and earplugs. He flipped Sirius onto his front and climbed onto the table behind him.
“Time for your reward, sweetheart. You can come whenever you want,” he whispered against Sirius's ear. It was almost too loud after the utter silence Sirius had been in. He let out a soft whimper as Remus raised his hips and plunged in.
Sirius was on the brink almost immediately. Remus’s thick, hot cock stretching him like no one else ever had, his hands roving across Sirius’s body, up his neck and into his hair, pulling his head back and creating the perfect arch. He pounded into Sirius over and over at a punishing rate.
He cried out as his orgasm hit, and he came, thick ropes of cum painting the table.
“Fuck, Sirius!” Remus gasped as Sirius’s body undulated around him. He thrust deep inside Sirius and stilled, his cock throbbing inside Sirius and his hot seed spilling out.
Remus pulled out and cradled Sirius against him, holding him tenderly until he came down from his high. “You were perfect, sweetheart,” he murmured, stroking Sirius’s hair. Sirius whined gently and nuzzled against Remus’s warm chest. He would happily stay here for hours, and Remus would let him.

The party was going well. So well, Niall had already sworn undying love to one multi-tiered chocolate cake, two friendly corgi-poodle mixes, Zayn’s hair, and the entire population of Los Angeles. So well, Zayn had only laughed and ruffled Niall’s hair and not even twitched towards a cigarette. So well, nearly everyone had spilled far past the boundaries of the night’s original plans, extracting bottles of vodka from the cabinets and losing a lot of clothes. Harry had proclaimed that he was finally going to throw a small and very grownup dinner party and of course here they were three hours later, fifty people half-naked in the pool. Soon to be full-naked, if Louis had to guess. Everybody in LA loved a heated pool. Everybody loved Harry.
9) Captain Cupid | Not Rated | 15,331 words
“Right,” Niall started, finally getting the opportunity to unleash his horrible plan. “Well, as you both know, I’m an excellent matchmaker. A human Cupid. The best of the best at finding one's mate. And I’ve decided it’s time to make money doing it.”
“Oh, God no,” Louis groaned, picking up his empty plate and placing it in the sink. He needed to escape as quickly as possible.
Or the one where Niall enlists his friends to help start a speed dating side hustle. Things don't go as planned... or maybe they do?
10) Your Touch Is The Only Thing I Feel | Mature | 15,979 words
Liam. Liam was finally here. Louis kept his eyes closed and cuddled farther into Liam’s side, revelling in the pheromones Louis’ body desperately needed. He wasn’t sure how long Liam had been holding him, but Louis figured it had to have been at least an hour by the way his body had loosened. The need of an alpha’s touch seemed to have been temporarily lifted from his mind.
Louis listened to the sounds of the pub around him. It was louder than before he had fallen asleep and he briefly wondered why Liam hadn’t just woken him to go back to their flat.
“Who the fuck are you?”
Louis’ eyes flew open at the sound of Niall’s voice, and the arm that had been around Louis shoulders lifted in the same instant. He missed the warmth immediately.
Louis looked from Niall’s stormy face over to the person who was definitely not Liam. The alpha Liam impersonator, who smelled a lot better than the actual Liam now that Louis was alert, looked back at Louis with wide eyes and familiar furrowed brows.
11) Etched In Salt (Is A Cathedral Of The World) | Explicit | 24,417 words
Note: This fic has mentions of BH.
Louis asks for very few things in life, and they are: to solve cases, to keep bad people from doing their bad things, to get good coffee, to go home to a spacious apartment with nobody else in it, and to manage his stupid telempathy powers with minimal interference. And now he's stuck in a tiny cabin in a snowstorm in the middle of god-awful-nowhere with Harry Styles. Because of course he is.

13) Dont Know Its Lost Til You Find It | Explicit | 30,614 words
Maybe it’ll be better this way. Maybe Louis just needs to distance himself, get over his crush so Harry doesn’t have to worry about his obsessive friend who feels too much and says too little.
He wonders what this girl is like. What she looks like, what conversations they had to make Harry fall for her in three days. If maybe she’s just stellar in bed. If she smells like heaven or if it’s just the fact she’s a girl.
He wonders and wonders, resists the temptation to stare at the alpha, and gets exactly no work done.
14) Compass To My Soul | Teen & Up | 31,439 words
Harry Styles, alpha, is 1/4 of the perfect pack, and 1/5 of world famous boy band One Direction. He spends his time touring the world with his best friends and family.

Before they pass each other too many times, the universe takes it upon themselves to make them meet.
16) Too Young To Know | Mature | 35,412 words
Louis blinked awake and quickly wiped the tears from his eyes. This was the second morning in a row he had woken up after dreaming about Harry.

Louis swears on his life that that man came out of literal nowhere and he thanks each lucky star for having good breaks in his car.
This strange alpha also happens to be the most beautiful being Louis has laid his eyes on.
For some unknown reason, the omega feels safe around the alpha. It might seem strange, but you can't always explain why or how things are the way they are. All you can really be sure of is that they happen for a reason. There's a higher power (call it what you want) that knows better and definitely knows more than you do.
25) Saving Symphony Hall | Explicit | 124,766 words
Note: This fic is a sequel to fic #xx on this list. It is also locked and can only be read by AO3 users.

“Oh christ, that's the problem-solving face,” Babs said. “Last time we saw that face, he sold a company.”
“Wait, what?” Zayn asked.
“Right place, right time,” Louis said. “Also, fuck my life,”
“What?” Zayn repeated. Niall patted his hand.
“I usually just roll with whatever Louis is about to do,” he said. “It’s better for us all.”
“That’s the attitude,” said Louis, “I’ll tell you tomorrow. Tonight, I need to do some research. Zayn, give me your number. I’m gonna save our symphony.”

What many clinicians and researchers have quietly noticed but only partly studied: autistic women (and AFAB nonbinary people) do often report a stronger drive for touch-based co-regulation, while many autistic men seem comparatively detached from or avoidant of it.
The reasons appear to be multi-layered: partly biological, partly developmental, partly social conditioning.
1. Socialization and suppression
From early childhood, boys are discouraged from seeking or expressing physical comfort except in narrow contexts (sports, aggression, sex).
Girls, meanwhile, are permitted — even expected — to use touch for bonding: hugging friends, leaning close, soothing others.
By adulthood, that conditioning is so deep that many autistic men simply don’t recognize their deprivation as touch hunger; they reinterpret it as fatigue, irritability, or a need to withdraw. It’s not that they don’t have the biology — it’s that the language of the body has been culturally silenced in them.
2. Masking styles and attachment imprint
Autistic women are often hyper-attuned to others’ emotional states as part of social masking — scanning faces, tones, micro-movements to stay safe. That hyper-attunement means they also register co-regulation cues more vividly. When those cues vanish, the absence feels like falling out of sync with gravity.
Many autistic men, by contrast, mask through avoidance or intellectualization: distancing from embodied cues to manage overwhelm. The result is a kind of disembodied competence — they live in their heads, sometimes barely registering sensory deprivation until it becomes physical pain or shutdown.
3. Hormonal and neurochemical modulation
Oxytocin and estrogen interact closely. Estrogen increases the sensitivity of oxytocin receptors and amplifies the calming response to touch.
Testosterone tends to dampen oxytocin sensitivity and shift reward salience toward dominance or achievement rather than affiliation.
That doesn’t mean men lack the capacity for tenderness — just that the same physical stimulus produces a weaker regulatory signal. In autistic men, where baseline arousal and sensory gating already differ, that smaller oxytocin effect may not register as compelling relief, so they don’t crave it in the same way.
4. Sensory integration profiles
Autistic females statistically show more tactile seeking and tactile defensiveness overlap — meaning touch can be overwhelming and deeply needed, depending on context. That paradox keeps the body’s awareness of touch front-of-mind.
Autistic males more often present with tactile avoidance without the craving side; they shut down the whole channel early in life because of overstimulation or social confusion around touch. Over time, their nervous systems may simply adapt by numbing to that sensory dimension.
5. Safety and context
For many autistic women, touch is one of the few reliable routes to grounding when words and logic fail — but it’s also where trauma often happens. So when safe, consensual touch does exist, it can feel transcendent — the nervous system finally exhaling after years of defensive tension.
Autistic men often don’t experience that same “safe release” context. Many feel ambivalent: touch equals pressure, confusion, or performance. So they retreat from it before it can regulate them.
