I think there's a lot of things that changed him both mentaly and physically after he died and some part of him knew that. he probaby heard about cotards before, told himself that's what it is. took some sort of comfort in beliving that its just a delusion while still fully beliving it. its easier to hide if you think theres a possibly of it not being real, after all its impossible right?
