THE UNTAMED episode 15
+ live Yunmeng shuangjie reaction:
I do not have the skills for this <- (has never drawn whatever that genre of art is where they're humans but with animal ears) but I need someone to draw little dogboy Jiang Cheng hiding his dog ears and putting on a cat ear headband so little foxboy Wei Wuxian won't be scared of him anymore
Restless Rewatch: The Untamed, Episode 39 Part 3

Days of Future Past
After they leave Yi City, the gang comes to a proper town where there is a lantern festival going on, or else it's just a town that is really nuts about lanterns.
The juniors go shopping, looking at random trinkets, cell-phone cases, sunglasses, and electric toys that will break as soon as you get them home. Wait, that's my local mall I'm thinking of. But it's the same idea, pretty much.
Judging by the dream catchers hanging up on the right, this particular Ancient-China kiosk is owned by a traveling Ojibwe person.
Sizhui experiences a callback to symbolism from the past as he looks at an array of toy insects.
Jin Ling toy shames him, and Lan Jingyi comes to his defense.
Toys are for every age, people. Even if you outgrow one style of play, there's a lot of ways to enjoy toys, including tucking them in your robe and pulling them out to look at them whenever you have a memory cascade.
When Sizhui was young, he looked at toys with Wei Wuxian. Wei Wuxian didn't give him the toys, however, because "asking is asking, buying is buying." For Wei Wuxian, there was always a vast chasm between what he wanted and what he could actually have. Lan Wangji, of course, promptly gave A-Yuan toys, including a version of this grass butterfly.
The last time we saw A-Yuan with the butterfly is the last time A-Yuan saw Wei Wuxian. WWX frightened him and he dropped his butterfly, and everything went to shit after that. So I think it's fair to say the butterfly symbolizes some stuff.
(More after the cut!)
Do y'all ever think about Wei Wuxian's relationships and the places that foster them?
After Wei Wuxian's brief stay there, the Cloud Recesses are burnt down by the Wens. The place is destroyed completely, but it's built back up exactly the same as it was before. Resurrected Wei Wuxian can still recognize and navigate it by memory from when he was a teenager before all the destruction.
On the other hand, Lotus Pier, the place where Wei Wuxian spent the better part of a decade growing up, is almost unrecognizable to him when he returns post-resurrection. After Lotus Pier was sacked and massacred, after the twin prides fell apart in the war's aftermath, Jiang Cheng rebuilt the place grander and utterly different than it was before. The buildings Wwx remembers, including his old rooms, are gone.
I think that works quite well as a stand in for certain aspects of Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng's relationships with Wei Wuxian. Lan Zhan becomes Wei Wuxian's support, always solid and the same as he's ever been, and Jiang Cheng tries to remake himself into someone utterly apart from his old martial brother and the relationship they had.
can we please mention how jiang cheng didn't own a dog for years even after wei wuxian died?
(and as much as he probably loves fairy, it's not his dog, it's jin ling's).
after wwx's death there really was no reason to go along with the rule of not allowing dogs on Lotus Pier, there was no one there with a phobia anymore, wei wuxian left, abandoned jc, he became the enemy of all the clans and their mothers, and then he died. poof, gone forever. jc was free to adopt some fluffy friends, we know perfectly well how much he loves dogs and he honestly deserved that little happiness.
and yet.
and yet, he never did. he never got a dog.
perhaps, jiang cheng wanted to have his home ready, just in case. because wwx wouldn't step foot in there if he found a dog, and that was unacceptable.
a part deep inside himself still hoping desperately, clinging to an impossible dream and a broken promise, an anguished wish where wei wuxian would return, one day.
A small selection of song lyrics I think would make good fic titles:
It's not you I'm leaving, from Steady Steady by The Crane Wives. Twin prides reconciliation
Guilty of your innocence, from ...Well, Better Than The Alternative by Will Wood. Angsty post canon Lan Xichen
Bury the hatchet or bury a friend, from Bury A Friend by Billie Eilish. High stakes twin prides reconciliation
I shine only with the light you gave me, from The Moon Will Sing by The Crane Wives. Could be a lot of things, but right now I'm thinking of Wen Ning. Unrequited Ningxian perhaps?
Neatly fold your skeletons but still can't shut the closet door, from Laplace's Angel by Will Wood. Jin Guangyao centered psychological horror
Losing me is better than losing you, from Losing You by Wonho. Wei Wuxian

“The only crime I admit to is the crime of being aquainted with Wen Rouhan’s second son. We don’t get along. I took part in a hunt near the Qishan border, and that brat used it as an opportunity to detain me on grounds of conspiracy against the crown.” He laughed again, but it was a mean one. “Ha! He thinks he and his sorry excuse of a court hold a much larger part of my attention than reality entails.”
Well, he had been conspiring against the Wen crown; it's just that Wen Chao had had no proof.
(Or, how did Wei Ying end up in that cell?)
