Somehow, he’d ended up on a chair. He didn’t remember doing it, but here he was, so either he got here himself or someone had put him here. He looked up at Remus, eyes narrowed.
“How old is he?”
“It’s almost his first birthday,” Remus said in an even, factual tone that Sirius appreciated.
“What date?” he asked, thinking of how Draco was nearly one.
“The 31st of July,” Remus answered him. Sirius nodded as he absorbed the information. So Lily and James’s boy was slightly younger than Draco, who’d been born on the 5th of June. Both would go to Hogwarts at the same time. It was an odd feeling, having known Draco since the day he was born, watching him grow, learn to walk, to shout ‘Father!’ at the top of his lungs when he wanted something. He’d already bought him his first birthday present, a little toy broom that hovered just high enough for Draco’s feet to skim across the floor. He couldn’t wait to give it to him. He doted on that sweet boy, the only good thing about having to deal with his extended family. Not that Cissa was bad, she was quite pleasant and far kinder since she’d had Draco, not that he’d cross her. It was Bella who was the pain. She’d already planned out poor Draco’s life. Dictating how he would best serve the Dark Lord. Sirius had made an unbreakable vow with Narcissa to never let that happen. He’d run away with the boy before he let Voldemort get his claw-like hands on him. He was his Godfather after all.
“Sirius, I’m sorry, I honestly thought you knew. I can’t believe they didn’t tell you,” Remus’s voice was tinged with pity now, and it made Sirius seethe. He wasn’t a bad guy. He’d been dropped into Voldemort’s lap by Dumbledore. He’d only agreed to it so he could save Regulus from being sucked in so deep he’d never be able to resurface. “I have a picture of him, if you want to see him,” Remus said when Sirius didn’t say anything. He took out his wallet and held a moving wizard photo of a raven-haired baby with bright green eyes. He looked just like James.
“I bet Effie and Monty were overjoyed to have a baby around the house after everything they went through with James. Did they say anything about them not being married when they had him?” Effie and Monty were the furthest thing from traditional, but he did know how much family meant to them, and marriage was something drilled into Purebloods, no matter how eccentric they were. Remus winced at him.
“So, er, I guess no one mentioned the wedding to you either?”
Sirius had had enough; he got up out of his chair, walked to the front door and flung it open. He leapt down the front steps, transforming in midair and took off down the pavement as Padfoot, disappearing into the gloom as fast as his giant paws would carry him.
