What is amatanormativity?

The idea that everyone needs, wants, and is destined to have and end up in a romantic relationship. The idea that in order to be happy, you must be in love. And if you’re not in love, and if you’re not in a permenantly romantic relationship that will last until the day you die, you can’t possibly be happy, or content. The idea that if you’re not in love and not in a relationship, you’re broken, half of a person.

Soulmate AUs exist because of amatanormativity and their entire purpose is to reinforce it. They literally tell people “if you are not in love with someone you are half a person and you will never be happy”.

Love is not what makes us human.

Love is not required for happiness.

Soulmate AUs are not allowed unless you’re writing them specifically to burn them to the ground.
