summary
“I guess Eurydice and Orpheus didn’t get their happy ending?” “No,” Buck confirms, with a rueful sigh, “he got her back, but the condition was that he couldn’t look backwards until they got back to earth, but he looked back, and he lost her.” Eddie eases up the pressure on his palm, without even bothering to check how reddish his skin might be, as he inhales sharply. He cannot help but think about the way he doesn’t seem to be able to look away from Buck now that he is back in LA. How his gaze always finds Buck, at work and in their home. It’s an instinct. *** or, Buck has been thinking a lot about home and belonging

Flash Fest Week 3: Untold Endings Prompt: Season 5 Episode 6 - Brawl in Cell Block 9-1-1 Hosted by: @buddiecreators

When Eddie asked Buck to come over, he assumed it was because Chris wanted him to.
He didn’t expect to be crushed by a hug the minute he unlocked the door.
“Eddie, hey,” Buck said, trying to keep himself steady with the extra weight attached. “What’s wrong?”
“Couch,” Eddie mumbled into his neck, avoiding the question.
Buck wasn’t one to argue. They had the time since he had cancelled on Taylor, much to her annoyance. Buck couldn’t comprehend why she couldn’t understand that the Diaz’s were his priority.
It took some adjusting, trying to walk with a six foot tall limpet, but they did it. When Buck fell onto the couch, Eddie crashed on top of him.
Buck’s breath hitched. They’d hugged before, but this was new territory. At first, it seemed like an accident, but with a few squirms, Eddie made himself comfortable on Buck’s lap.
With his left hand on Eddie’s waist to keep him stable, Buck brought his right to his best friend’s shoulder. Slowly, he let his hand wander in soothing circles. He was surprised when he felt Eddie go boneless with a soft sigh.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Whispered Buck, trying not to ruin the moment.
Eddie shrugged noncommittally, snuggling deeper into Buck’s chest.
He tried a different approach.
“You know,” Buck said. “When asked me to come over, I thought Chris would be at the door, seeing how he was the one asked for me.”
“No he didn’t.”
Now they were getting somewhere.
“He didn’t?” Buck asked.
Eddie shook his head no, and Buck was pretty sure where this was heading.
“You know, if you wanted to see me, you could have just asked, instead of using your son. I would have come anyway.”
They sat in silence for a moment before Eddie spoke.
“-was scared,” he mumbled.
“What?”
Eddie titled to look into Buck’s eyes.
“I was scared. For you, for us. And,” Eddie breathed in. “You said you wanted to see Taylor and I… I didn’t think I could ask.”
Buck tugged Eddie back down, and tucked him under his chin.
“For the record,” Buck murmured, “I was scared too, when the gun went off.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. Athena almost had my hide when I ran out. Thought you-“
Buck couldn’t finish his sentence. That feeling, when he thought Eddie was gone, again. He couldn’t take it.
He didn’t notice when Eddie took his hand, until it was up against his heart. He could feel the life coursing through Eddie.
“I’m right here, Buck. I’m not leaving you,” he promised.
“Good,” Buck replied. “And, for the record, I want to know when you’re scared. I want you to tell me.”
Eddie nodded but didn’t speak, instead playing with Buck’s fingers.
Eddie’s weight, and the silence that came with, made Buck feel warm inside. It was nice, having that closeness with him.
Maybe.
Perhaps in another life, there could be more.
But at that moment, a hug would have to do.

This was written in honor of my 2 year ficaversary that was on September 1st. I can’t believe I’ve been writing for fic for two years now. AND that I’ve forgotten September 1st both years.
Anyway after I forgot, I wrote this. But then after I posted on Thursday I realized “I have to wait until Sunday for when the anonymous voting has finished so I don’t give myself away more than I already have being a D1 Yapper.” So you all get it now.
Thank you all so much for reading!
