speaking of libraries and how good and important they are, i drew this last month as a thank-you for the graphic novel and comics round table awards at ALA for naming Hunger's Bite one of their honor books for YA fiction.
librarians are at the front of the fight against book bans and the defunding of libraries, and are an invaluable part of our social safety net. and for authors--they are out greatest cheerleaders and customers. you must respect the library!!! you must!!!!!
go to your local library!! check out books!!! check out MY book and read it for free. i want you to!!!
I keep seeing takes about how data centers in general are evil etc and how they existed before AI and will exist after and yeah that’s mostly true, but we had the world wide web for 3 decade before it spiked electricity prices 200-300% in the space of 36 months so maybe your “pox o’ both your houses” shit is like, a little off.
This sort of backlash is understandable and maybe even inevitable, but it’s also very poorly informed. You can hate general purpose data centers all you want, but the environmental impact of them was, proportionally, way way smaller than anthropic and OpenAI.
By the way, don’t get me wrong, I want to see the community skepticism aspect of this stay. You should be questioning large industrial installations! It’s insane that it happened so uncontroversially before now.
Protect California's coasts!
No matter where you live, you can speak up and take action now to protect the coast of California from offshore drilling.
The Trump administration's plan for new offshore oil and gas drilling in federal waters is expected any day. If finalized, drilling could begin off the California coast as soon as next year.
We need you—our Aquarium Tumblr community—to act right now.
📣 California residents: Tell your lawmakers to vote YES on AB 1448—closing loopholes that let old infrastructure fuel new drilling. Submit by August 3.
📣 Everyone: Tell NOAA to keep California's coastal protections strong. NOAA needs to hear from everyone who loves the California coast, no matter where you live. Public comments are due August 22.
Our coast can't wait. Take action now:
Take two actions to stop federal offshore drilling off California's coast.
let’s talk about how they made it impossible to function without a phone and digitalised everything and then turned around and went “actually! these phone things aren’t safe for kids but it’s magically ok once you’re eighteen. guess you’ll have to have your life dictated by your parents now lol cause we’re gonna take the devices away from you. IT’S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD WHY ARE YOU COMPLAINING”
ok my apologies. take away my ability to buy anything too ig because these fuckass stores don’t accept cash anymore. take away my ability to communicate with people outside my house and school because I can’t text and I can’t email and I cant drive to them either and I can’t even fucking get public transport without a phone either. can’t order at a fucking restaurant without being asked to get a membership and install an app and also very sorry but you can only order through our online menu now! have you ever considered that it’s not just about instagram?

The Great Smokey Mountains is set to get just a little bit greater thanks to a 600-acre donation from a south-focused nature nonprofit.
A conservation nonprofit recently purchased a tract of land next to Great Smokey Mountains National Park, adding 600 acres to the protected park. The forest and wildlife habitat on the property will now be preserved for future generations rather than at risk of development.

Self care kind of got co-opted by like, Lush marketing, but the thing is that actually self care is an extreme uphill battle. You need good sleep good food and gentle exercise calibrated for your specific physiology. How many days a week do I get all 3 of these? Hahahahahahahha
all human beings have certain needs and disabilities/illnesses often make those needs much harder to meet. crucially, this does not mean that the needs cease existing.
Also crucially, you don't need to have everything every day. You can have good food today and a nap today and go for a walk tomorrow or whatever.
And some is better than none. A good meal or a bit of movement once a week is better than never. Getting enough sleep sometimes is better than never.
Don't tell yourself you can't have a little bit of nice things just because you can't have a lot bit of them. (And food, movement, and rest are all nice things to have)
just in case you need a reminder 💘

There should be a law that if instant ramen rises above $0.10 per packet, all records of the stock market get fed into an industrial shredder.

listen i'm not advocating for exotic animals as pets, but i really just feel like cheetahs are probably different
i feel like we need to give them another shot as housebeasts
this is a critter who wants greenies and then to take a nap on the couch next to me, and i KNOW it
cheetah in House perfec t size for put inside! inside very Soft and Comfort cheetah sleep soundly put cheetah in House. Put Cheetah In House. no problems ever in cheetah in ho use because good Happy and Satisfy for human where sleep. House yes a place for a cheetah put cheetah in house can trust cheetah for giveing good love to humans in house. friend cheetah
I mean, as someone who as worked in a zoo, this is fairly true.
Obvious disclaimer that you shouldn't have wild animals as pets.
But like, cheetahs are the only large cats that keepers will do free contact with. Hell, even most small cats don't get free contact. (Because small cats can be VICIOUS. They'll have a baby pallas cat wearing thicker gloves than when handling an owl. Because small cats can just be vicious.)
Like I think the only other cat at our zoo where I've seen free contact with was servals? Because I know they've used servals in shows to demonstrate their natural jumping ability. But I know servals can sometimes have a mean temper as well. Meanwhile they'll do the cheetah run and afterwards put the mic by the cheetahs and it's just like an engine with them purring. It's fascinating to watch when the message in every other large animal is "no free contact because it's dangerous even when they're born in captivity".
Legit if any wild animal could be adapted to a pet it would be cheetahs lmao. Only problem is they can be skittish and very anxious and that's why they're often raised around dogs in zoos to gain confidence.
congrats, i award you funniest take on this post
