no one asked but here are my hcs about what kinds of horror movies the foxes would watch
kevin- he’d be really into horror movies that also incorporate something he’s really interested in. like paranormal ones with accurate historical settings or lore based in real historical events. there’s definitely some niche horror movie that focuses on a high school exy team somehow and everyone expects kevin to hate it but he actually loves it. bc when kevin loves something he LOVES something and as long as that thing is portrayed in a piece of media with clear intention and research and respect, that love would spread to that piece of media no matter the genre. i don’t think he’d like psychological horror or anything to do with cults tho. those are his lines even if it’s connected to a subject he likes.
neil- i don't think neil really likes movies as a medium. if he's watching something that's not exy it's more likely to be a tv show. that being said, so long as the horror movie doesn't feature a subject that is particularly triggering and also portrayed realistically, i think he would find some level of entertainment in it. like an example is he would watch slasher movies and guess the killer and explain what's unrealistic and be perfectly content, but anything featuring realistic dismemberment or psychological horror about being hunted/stalking is a no go bc it does not mesh well with his paranoia.
andrew- he can only watch bad horror movies. in a similar way that neil's paranoia doesn't mesh with certain horror movie premises, i think the same is true with andrew and the specific way suspense is portrayed in horror. good horror movies try to inflict a very specific kind of looming dread on the viewer and, considering how andrew is with control and how a lot of his fears/anxiety/paranoia (whatever you want to call it) is in the series based on looming threats he can't control or doesn't have a full picture of, i think that would pair really poorly with how suspense is done in horror movies. it's the framing not the content tho, like i think he'd be really interested in things like bad horror movies that are clearly absurd and (the total opposite) true crime docs and in canon he likes zombie media which is more thriller-horror than suspence-horror.
aaron- he likes the weird and creepy psychological horror movies. and also thriller ones. aaron is stressed all the time there's no convincing me that he's not considering he's pre-med, plays exy, is trying to maintain some incredibly rocky relationships, and now has the mafia to consider. in the way that a lot of people like horror movies bc its a "safe" way to be scared, aaron likes those sub-genres of horror bc of that and bc it's also a "safe" way to be stressed. i've seen people talk about, and i myself have also talked about, andrew and his relationship with control. i think aaron also has a complicated relationship with control after feeling like his life was ruled by something other than him for so long (tilda, drugs, andrew). this would effect what kinds of media and entertainment he likes. not only would getting to be invested in/sacred of something that will end after an hour and a half allow him to have a break, but he could also be that viewer going "clearly that's not real" or "i'd never do that" which would give him more of a sense of control over that fear. idk if i'm explaining this well i have too many thoughts about this.
nicky- he absolutely loves all horror movies and, unlike some of the other foxes, the more he can see a reflection of his own trauma and experience in it, the more he likes it. anything with religious themes, queer characters or queercoding, toxic and atypical family dynamics is a movie that he will watch a million times over. nicky talks a lot but he never really talks about how his experiences have affected him emotionally so i think he'd find some sort of catharsis in seeing a visceral or horrifying portrayal of something he's tried to bury and not talk about.
dan- will not watch a horror movie. it's not a genre she likes, she finds them boring. while others won't watch horror movies bc they scare easily, dan is the opposite. she does not get scared by horror movies so she finds them pointless. she can be jump scared, but will argue that doesn't count as getting truly scared bc its more so being startled. she has seen a decent amount of horror movies and that's why she refuses to watch any more (she doesn't want to be bored again).
matt- same as dan, he will not watch a horror movie. unlike dan, it is bc he is horrified by them. He doesn't like being scared, but it's not really about the fear its about the other feelings those movies bring up. matt is a very empathetic person and he would get very distressed by horror movies. especially after meeting and becoming close friends with neil. he has learned all about the real life horror that exists in the world and how the people he cares about have suffered bc of it. he would not want to watch anything that reminds him of that for entertainment.
allison- horror movies fanatic and the biggest defender of every final girl ever. allison is an advocate and enjoyer of female rage. there's some horror movies she despises with every ounce of her being for the way they treat women. but she's watched so many that she has a top 20 with elaborate reasoning. i don't really have a reason for why i think this i just believe it.
renee- i don't think she watches horror movies. if she doesn't it's probably only paranormal ones/ones with some sort of creature. renee's mentality is that she's "trying very hard to be good" and i think that, for her, a piece of that would be trying not to engage with subjects that remind her of her past actions (like horror movies that involve killers, violence, and "final girls") for the point of entertainment. and "for entertainment" is the key part. renee is not in denial of her past actions. she is able to acknowledge and process her actions as well as engage with violent subjects. she can even get violent when she needs to. but she is actively trying to move past and grow from her past, which is why i don't think she'd particularly enjoy movies that would be a reminder and would pick something else when she wants to watch something for fun.
