Or Gil-galad as son of Fingon was not considered to be old and wise enough and it, therefore, it passed to Turgon either as a proxy or protector or permanently; we do not know since it is not discussed. I personally thought the most problematic thing about Turgon and his kingship was that he has early on in the First Age made a decision to remove himself from the day-to-day struggles of the majority of the Eldar. Talk about remote or hands-off leadership! Jeez! Totally bizarre to me and quite a contrast to that of Fingolfin and Fingon, who actually played a role as true High-Kings of the Noldor.

Considering that it also said something like "his young son he sent to the havens", I think the explanation that Gil-galad was too young at the time to inherit a high kingship is extremely plausible. It's certainly not a unique mode. Actually, even on first reading of the Silm, I assumed this was why the crown passed to Turgon.

So you know there are some characters who are quite difficult to ship? Well, I had the conversation with my friend the other day on that matter and she mentioned Finrod and Sauron and I said how it was like a very unlikely pairing. Well, here is the art she sent to me of,eh, Finrod and Sauron in the First Age of Arda. I don’t know the author and don’t know if it is a fan art painting or some kind of association art. But seems that the battle of songs of power ended quite unusual for those two… Like really.
