So, regarding your Bug Monster!Leon AU, I had the hilarious thought of like... so the first time he transforms in front of Chris or one of his other old friends, it's probably going to be because they're in the middle of being attacked or something. And what if he's wearing a shirt he really likes, so knowing that the transformation is about to ruin it means that instead of getting his weapons ready or searching for cover, he's frantically-but-calmly whipping off his jacket and undoing buttons?

Chris is in the middle of his own hasty prep and he looks over to see Leon apparently planning to dazzle the zombies with his pecs (which are actually really impressive, what has he been doing lately).

Chris: stop trying to impress the ladies and help me kill these things!

Writing has many phases.

There is the Honeymoon phase, where you are walking along minding your own business, and the idea for a story hits you like a bolt from the blue, and you think, "Ah! What a delightful concept for a short story. This won't take much time to write at all!"

(this phase rarely lasts long.)

There is the Spite phase, where you have decided that no one else's opinion matters, you are writing this story for yourself and people are lucky you even want to share it at all, but it is getting written come hell or high water, and if you have to fistfight every single one of the gods along the way, so be it, at least that will make this Wednesday interesting.

There is the phase where you sit at your desk, cackling over how you are a writing DEITY and your readers will adore and worship you. There is also the phase where you sit in your bed under a blanket eating junk food in the dark, seriously considering never writing another word and also wondering if you can somehow just destroy everything you ever published anywhere. These phases often happen on the same day, at differing intensities, in no particular order, sometimes in rapid succession.

There are phases where ideas and words flow like water bursting from a dam and it's all you can do to write them down before they vanish out of your reach. There are phases where you must sift through the dross to find hidden gems that will reveal the world you're trying to describe in the glints of light reflecting off their surfaces.

There's the phase where you want to write anything but your story (case in point). There's the phase where you want to write nothing but your story. These often happen simultaneously.

Sometimes you say, "I don't know what I'm doing!", either before or after you exclaim, "Aha! I have it!"

Writing a story is a process of going through these phases again and again, hoping that the end result is worth all the pain and effort.

My attempts to make a mitered square blanket are ongoing. I didn't measure this nor do I really know what I am doing, but either way it isn't big enough. What will be big enough? /shrug emoji.

So now I need to decide if i want more of these colors or another color, and how much of each. I guess it's time for another trip to the crafting store this weekend and hope they still have this yarn or I'll have to start online shopping and that never ends well for my bank account.

Okay so this yarn is actually Lion Brand yarn, specifically Heartland. The colors are all named after various national parks around the USA, which is a lovely thing to do (especially in these trying times). But it seems that a. of the three big craft stores in my area (Jo-Ann's, Michaels, and that orange one we don't talk about in my household) only Jo-Ann's seems to carry Lion Brand. It's definitely the only one with Heartland; we can only hope that Michaels will start stocking more yarn after Jo-Ann's closes for good.

Speaking of that, I had a deadline since I decided that yes, I want more of these colors after all. And of course I knew I was already at a disadvantage; I haven't stepped foot in any of the stores for weeks, so I had no idea if any of the yarn I need would even be left. I also realized that I was going to need more colored skeins for the inside. I only had a purple-red, a maroon, a lime green, a sky blue-teal, and a light grey with colored flecks. I also needed more of the black to put it all together.

Could I have ordered this online? Sure, of course. But then I have to pay for shipping, and more importantly, I would have to do the worst thing of all: I would have had to wait.

So I got up super early, which for me is 8:30am, and I set out to see what there was left. There are three Jo-Ann's within half an hour of my house, and roughly half an hour of each other, so I figured it was worth checking them off one by one and seeing if I could find everything I needed that way.

First one, the one I usually go to, was almost completely a bust. It did have a lovely dark blue, a bright red, and a dusty orange, so I took those so it wouldn't be a complete waste.

Second one had a bit more; the dark brown was there, and I also got two different purple shades, and two more different blues because why not.

After a quick break to get new work shoes and some food shopping done, I decided that I would go to the final Jo-Ann's after all. I had been on the fence about it purely because it's the one I have gone to least for no particular reason, but in the end I am so glad I went. It had the tan I needed, and enough black skeins that I got three. I also grabbed a tawney, a stronger orange, a dark charcoal grey, and a dark green that I spotted in the wrong bin on my way out.

...then when I got home I ended up buying a golden yellow online because it was bothering me that I am clearly about to make a rainbow blanket but I didn't have a proper yellow for it. So uh. That was my day!

And now I am not allowed to step foot in any hobby store until this dang blanket is done. Plus maybe a few more months after that.

This is a combination of the work I've done for Skin Deep sphinxes as well as its own thing set in a world where mythical creatures are known but still largely a mystery to science. I leaned hard into the Zoobooks aesthetic for this, one of my favorite parts of those magazines were the anatomy drawings so I wanted to do one just like it!

Because AO3 is that site. Because AO3 was that site long before you decided AO3 was better than the sites you bullied us off of before, and I can promise you if someone somehow comes up with a fanfic site you like better specifically for the 'gross stuff' you'll try to bully us off that too so you can benefit from it.

AO3's specific core purpose is to preserve fanfiction, yes, but it was also instigated as a host site for the fanfiction that kept getting yeeted off other platforms like Wattpad. Its designed to preserve all fanfiction, not just the fanfiction you, personally, think is 'allowed' to be written.

AO3 is the site for all the gross stuff the freaks make. We've been there just as long as you. We've been funding it just as long as you have. AO3 has specifically said you have a place here. The timeline was literally:

Wattpad/FF.net/LiveJournal purge fanfics > AO3 is born > The people who's fics got purged moved over to AO3 > AO3 gains popularity as the best functioning site > The people who pushed for the fics to be purged off Wattpad move to AO3 > The same people try to push for AO3 to purge fics.

AO3's source coding is open-access. You go make a polished, strict, rigid site where nothing 'icky' is allowed. You go make a site where you can control what is hosted. We already have our space.

AO3 was specifically made for the stuff likely to be purged from other sites.

It was built around "we need to own the servers" so we wouldn't have to deal with anyone else's judgment calls about what was acceptable in fanfic: Not corporate sponsors, not evangelical religious groups, not "save the children" activists... and not other fans who think that The Gross Stuff should be banned from public view, only shared via private email after you've sent in a request heavily laden with special keywords.

Some of the founders remembered when slash fanfic was kept under the table at the dealer's room, distributed with brown paper wrappers only to people who knew to ask for it specifically.

And they said: Fuck that. Our art is not a crime and we're not going to be ashamed of it. If you are ashamed to have your art next to it - there's a whole wide internet that's ready to host your G-rated genfic.

AO3 was built for the stuff that was unwelcome elsewhere.
