Let me see priests punishing saints by covering their images with cloth when they feel their patrons are slacking in their patronly duties! Let me see the priests react in abject horror when the peasants take it a step further, throwing things and whipping statues in a pantomime of a cosmic peasant revolt. Let me see dead people legally own stuff, getting buried with fancy heirlooms that they failed to will to still-living family members. Let me see Christian philosophers pouring over the Qur’an - the classical textbook for Europeans trying to learn Arabic so that they could learn to read Arabic translations of Classical treatises. Let me see women reciting elaborate prayers -both Latin and vernacular- as they go about their days. Let me see a world where most Christians don’t give hell a second thought (that only happens to heathens, the thinking goes), but are actually super anxious about burning in Purgatory for a very, very long time. Let me see elaborate structures of kinship based around gift-giving and prayer; sure, you may be more closely related to your father’s sister, but it’s your mother’s sister’s husband’s father who sends gifts and has a Mass said for you each year, and so he gets priority.

“Wuthering Heights is racist. Heathcliff is a stereotype and a villain. Why would you feel sad that he is being whitewashed?”

This is a common sentiment on the “wuthering heights” tag nowadays so I am posting my opposition to it as a separate post too.

1- The families Heathcliff ruins were already pretty bad before he ruined them. This is an “abused becomes abuser” story rather than an “a demon ruins white families” story. The white people in the story are not really better than Heathcliff.

2- Wuthering Heights is primarily remembered as a love story by the general public and it is certainly the angle this new adaptation is going for. Interestingly, the 19th century critics who tended to focus on the revenge plot more were more ready to accept Heathcliff’s racial otherness. Heathcliff started to be whitewashed when Wuthering Heights started to be read as a love story and he became a literary sex icon.

Whitewashing Heathcliff (both in adaptations and in literary criticism) has never been and will never be about people being concerned with him being “too evil”, it had always been about people feeling squeamish about a dark-skinned Other being thoroughly romantically/sexually preferred by the white women in the story. And it is the case with this new adaptation too. Hence his originally blond romantic rival being played by a Pakistani actor in this new adaptation.

3- Heathcliff is a cool, calculating, smart villain. He is violent too but not any more than his white foster brother Hindley. Fictional villains, especially those in heightened and slightly unrealistic stories like Wuthering Heights, can be charismatic and cool and memorable. And there is nothing inherently racist about a villain not being white.

4- Catherine is also a terrible person. This story is not one about a demon lover corrupting an innocent girl. The whole point of the story is that Heathcliff and Catherine are similar people.

fennel's wuthering heights is about to become THE most racist movie adaptation of this book to date. whitewashing heathcliff is unfortunately nothing new, but this is a movie that accepts the existence of people of color only so long as they're relegated to roles of servants and placeholder characters, which is the complete opposite of what the story is about. it's the same old idea of poc being side characters and narrative ladders for white characters to step on in order to be in the spotlight and drive the story. lately there's been a lot of discussion about the "disposable poc love interest" trope (it's actually "the disposable black girlfriend" trope due to the consistency to which this keeps happening to black female characters, but other poc characters are often victims of this too), which is basically when a poc character will serve as love interest for the white main character for a short time until they get together with their one true love (another white character) and the poc gets written aside/off. wuthering heights was a story that subverted this problematic trope even before it was a thing. here the placeholder love interest is a white privileged man, while the character who gets the spotlight, the interesting conflict and the complex romance (that's still discussed and replicated today) is an underdog man of color. but now, fennel has bent over backwards to make extremely weird casting choices that inevitably plays right into this racist trope, once again portraying people of color as romantically undesirable and inferior to the epic charms of a complex white(washed) character.

The previous movies were racist and brownface-practicing in their casting, sure, but they still broadly acknowledged that Heathcliff was “ethnically marked” and made Edgar the whiter one.

The only exception is Bunuel’s Mexican version, but even that one was at least not a direct adaptation called “Wuthering Heights” which takes place in Yorkshire.

This upcoming movie is the most racist. It is more racist than the one made in 1939’s Hollywood - the one made in the same year as Gone With The Wind, the one made under The Hays’ Code, the one made in a country where interracial marriage was illegal. This 2026 adaptation is genuinely more racist than that one.

I don’t know what this means for our world, but it sure means nothing good.

The people Emerald Fennell is rage-baiting and “satirizing” are us, (mostly) women who read and loved Wuthering Heights and who know that Heathcliff is not white and that Catherine is not blonde and that they most likely do not have sex. We sometimes have English Lit degrees. We are a very negligible demographic and we are at worst annoying (I mean, we aren’t, but you know). We are not harmful, we are not culturally dominant, we are not anything that is worth satirizing frankly.

Most people will love this movie when it comes out. Us, people who actually love and care about a story being disrespected and turned into a meaningless racist mess, will have their voices drowned out.
