A Gingerbread Christmas
I was scrolling through Pinterest and came upon this writing prompt and this image. So I decided to smush the two and write a nice lil feel-good thing đ I also liked the concept of writing without including any names, so I tried that because why the hell not?
The door clicked into place and she sighed, placing the spoon back into the bowl and wiping her hands on her apron. Turning, she leaned back to the counter and folded her arms over her chest, looking towards the door. Her long brunette hair was pulled up into a messy ponytail and her face had specks of flour on it.
"Honneeeyyyy, i'm hoooommmeeee!" The phrase echoed around the corridor and she had to bite her lip to stop herself from giggling. "Baaaabbbee, where are yoooouuu?" The voice crooned again and this time, she let out a small giggle. "Ah ha! I found yooouu!" The voice continued, before a head with shocklingly bright auburn hair appeared in the doorway. Soon, the rest of the body followed, stumbling into the kitchen. She giggled at her crazy girlfriend and went back to her baking.
"Did you have a nice time?" The brunette enquired whilst working.
"It was soo much fun... the free wine really helped liven the party..." The red-head laughed before leaning on the counter and continuing. "How are you?"
"I'm good, just making some cupcakes for the dinner tomorrow," the brunette responded smiling, continuing to mix the buttercream.
"Oohhh, verrryyy nice!... What flavour?"
"Gingerbread."
"Oh my God I LOVE gingerbread!"
The brunette chuckled, "I know sweetheart, that's why I chose it."
"Ohhh, lemme help lemme help lemme help!!"
"Uh uh, nooo way! You'll only make a mess"
"I will not!"
"You will!"
"Will not!"
"Are you sober?"
"I'm moderately functional," the red-head replied confidently.
"I'll take that as a no, which means you're going to make a mess!" she laughed and began putting the buttercream into the piping bag.
"I still want to help though..." the red-head said, swiping a finger into the bowl of icing.
"Hey! And you can help by keeping me company."
"And testing the food to make sure it tastes good..." The red-head swiped another finger across the rim of the bowl.
"I'm glad it seems to meet your approval." The brunette laughed and began piping the icing on the cakes.
"I do need to test a cake though... just to be sure..."
"Well if you insist..." Ths brunette handed a cupcake to her girlfriend, but before the red-head could do anything with it, it had been knocked into her face, covering her in icing.
"Hey!" The red-head protested, but her girlfriend could not reply; she was laughing too hard. The red-head licked her lips, cleaning her mouth of the icing, but leaving the rest of her face coated. "I mean, I guess that was karma for stealing the icing..." she giggled.
"Exactly... although you did miss a little bit there babe."
"Oh, where?"
"Just... there." The brunette said, removing a teeny speck of icing and leaving the rest in place.
"Thanks babe." And the pair broke into laughter.
"But can I actually help though? I promise I'll try not to make a mess."
"I guess so... I was going for a rustic look anyway, so you can be on sprinkle-duty."
"Great! I'm gonna be the best sprinklererer ever!" The red-head exclaimed and the pair laughed.
Christmas is always chaotic, but sometimes finding the nicest parts come from unexpected surprises... and sometimes come from taking a cupcake to the face.
