This year I see a lot more discussion about lack of women ocs in the context of art fight, and I'm so baffled when people in the comment say "it's not that deep". Man, people ignore half of the population of the earth because of misogyny, is it not that deep or are you just dumb?
Not having women ocs dose not automatically make you Women Hater Villain TM, but this is in fact a widespread phenomenon that does show societal bias towards women and it's refusal to even engage with a though that maybe women are worthy to be talked about
Or alternatively instead of reading so much into this, it could also just be that people
A) are better at drawing men than women
A.a) people are more used to drawing men because of gay fanart, therefore it’s just easier
B) use their oc as their persona and identify male presenting
C) people base their oc off on character/people they aspire/adore/like, which by chance just happen to be more often male (presenting) characters in media
C.c) some people tend to draw what they are attracted to (also taking it in the sense of people drawing perfect bodies instead of obese people, to take the topic away from gender)
D) what are the chances the character is androgynous/nonbinary and you just read that as “all male, no woman >:(“ because they tend to not look feminine
An *individual* can make a male oc and it means nothing at all for the reasons you listed. The OP isn't pointing and talking at one single individual and asking "why are you only drawing men?" The OP is asking "why do *so many artists* draw mostly men rather than there being a more 50/50 split in OC gender representation?"
A.) why would so many people be better at drawing men rather than women? It may be a lack of practice or a bias in learning materials favoring male models over female models.
Aa.) WHERE IS THE YURI??? don't even get me started on how fandoms tend to make more content for m/m ships over f/f ships.
B.) if this was largely the case, we would see more ocs used as a persona for people identifying as female. Nothing wrong with making an OC that reflects your identity, but that isn't the real reason there are more male ocs than female ocs.
C.) can we please think critically about the phrase "just happen to be more often male." Why would people tend to like, adore, or aspire to be like male characters/people over female characters/people? Maybe it's because there are more male characters in media, maybe it's because male characters tend to be more fleshed out in media, maybe it's because people tend to pay more attention to men in the real world... No matter how you slice it, it's the misogyny that's present in the very fabric of pop culture and media, which is exactly proving the point that OP is trying to make. Misogyny, whether people realize it or not, is the reason there are more male ocs in art fight rather than female ocs.
Cc.) it's fine to draw what you're attracted to. But *again,* if attraction was the reason there is a disproportionate ratio of gender representation, we'd have way more female ocs because being attracted to women is not rare. (Not getting into the "perfect bodies" thing... That phrase doesn't mean anything. What.)
D.) OP mistaking one/a few nonbinary OCs for men would not explain the overall phenomenon of underrepresentation of women. They're not saying all OCs are men. They are saying the representation of female OCs to male ocs is disproportionate.
The first step to fighting a societal bias against women is acknowledging that it exists, and that we are ALL affected by unconscious bias as a result. OP is not saying that art fight is full of people who hate women, they're saying that art fight is a reflection of a society that tends to revere, center, and represent men while pushing women into the background.
