Stuff kids on tumblr better relearn
1. You are responsible for your own media experience.
2. There is such a thing as a healthy level of avoidance towards topics that make you feel unwell or even (in a real-life clinical definition of the term) trigger you - but you are the one to actively take care of what you view.
3. Avoiding does not mean policing others.
4. You have no right to tell artists to censor themselves - you may criticize what others do, you may dislike it, that’s fine - but actively asking for censorship when you could easily unfollow or block a person just makes you look incompetent in your use of the internet.
5. Do not give people on tumblr or /any/ website the responsibility for your emotional well-being. Because these people do not even know you so no, you have no right to ask them to take care of you.
6. Content creators are not your parents and owe you nothing, not even a breakdown on why their content isn’t problematic. You don’t get to demand a dissertation denouncing any and everything unhealthy in a piece you don’t like. Move on.
LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK
YES THIS 👏👏👏
7. Disliking something does not automatically make it, and everyone who does like it, “problematic” or “toxic.” Stop digging for reasons to be hateful and ugly towards people because they just so happen to enjoy something that you don’t. As long as they’re not hurting anybody, just let people be happy and enjoy what they enjoy.
ever wondered who you’d be in a shakespeare play? fear not, i made a shakespearean character generator!!!
(please put in the tags what you got, i’m curious)
Worked on this girl for 9 months. Now this new music video comes out and she’s immensely popular, arguably one of the most popular characters in the LoL universe.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m really glad she’s a huge hit, it’s super exciting to see so many people love the character design and the gameplay, and know that I contributed directly and significantly to the behind-the-scenes engineering that makes it all work. It’s validating.
But it’s also so fucking melancholy to know I did so much work and put in so much time for such a shitty company, run by shitty people, and the reward I got for it was unemployment.
I threw a lot into this character. I cried at work. I started getting panic attacks, which I’ve never gotten before. I developed persistent heart palpitations from the daily overwhelming stress and had to go to the hospital (this is true, seriously.) I basically dropped all my friends outside of work. My manager (and his manager!) lied to me constantly to keep me working. They said I was doing a great job but to keep it up. Don’t worry, it’s going to turn out great, and it’ll all be worth it in the end – recognition, a raise, probably a promotion in short order. They promised me the world. When she was finally finished, I didn’t even get to go to the release party, they just walked me out.
I remember a quote from my last day, it sticks out in my mind: “I know you realize this is really hard for me,” my manager said. Yes, in the end, when he awkwardly informed me I didn’t have my dream job anymore – or any job at all – and then stared back at my shell-shocked face, my thousand-yard stare, the only thing he felt was sorry for himself.
She launched with no major bugs and was considered a technical success. Doesn’t matter. Get the fuck out.
I don’t know how I feel. A weird sensation of pride and intense bitterness. I did a good job; at least, I think I did. Unfortunately, internal validation is the only kind I’m going to get.
Everyone reposting KDA should see this. Riot has successfully distracted everyone into forgetting their culture of sexism, exploitation, and toxicity mere months after it was all revealed.
Look, I get it. Akali is EXTREMELY my type. It’s obvious how much love and care was put into her development. But it makes me furious to see all the free advertising that Riot is getting from people who I thought would know better. And now? One of the people who is arguably responsible for all that free advertising? Who’s work is undoubtedly making Riot hundreds of thousands of dollars a day? Who was overworked to the point of near breaking? They get nothing. WORSE than the scant bit of credit that most devs can get in a big company like Riot. They got let go.
Fuck Riot Games.
One thing that I thought really sucked a lot is that the production company who made the KDA video isn’t even credited. They credit a lot of other people on their videos, usually, but the actual animators of the video are hidden; almost a lie by omission. At best it’s a honest mistake, at worst it’s sneakily trying to pass off the video as something made in-house when it’s not. :(
and they’re currently being sued for gender discrimination. you can read the whole lawsuit at the bottom of that page, and boy is it a mess 🙃🙃
god i just found this again while folder cleaning
one of the few crossdressing ducks that didn’t make me break out in hives, on account of not having been forced to do it for emasculating reasons or anything, it’s just a practical solution to daisy having too many obligations since they look exactly, and i mean exactly the same
one of those obligations was manning a kissing booth for charity and donald punching a catcaller in the face escalates into guys just fucking lining up to get decked by a cute little duck
get on his fucking level, mickey
#mickey: who’ll have to endure this humiliation#donald: who’ll get to wear the pretty dress
GET ON HIS FUCKING LEVEL, MICKEY
California Is Burning
I don’t make posts like this often–ever, really–but I need you guys to understand what’s happening in my home right now.
As of 10 AM this morning, this is the air quality around where I live.
This means there is nowhere that the air is safe to breathe near me. Yesterday it got so bad that even inside the office I work in, the air was unsafe to breathe and our HR team had to secure masks for us to wear just to sit at our desks. There’s so much smoke in the air that it looks like cloud cover, and our temperature is decreasing because sunlight isn’t getting through.
And we are the lucky ones. Despite how bad our situation is, it could be so, so much worse.
The fires currently burning in California are now, officially, most destructive and deadliest we’ve ever had. 59 people have been confirmed dead, countless more are injured and missing. Thousands of homes have been destroyed, hundreds of thousands of people displaced. The town of Paradise, CA does not exist anymore. 138,000 acres have been decimated in the north; another 100,500 acres are burning in the south.
If you have anything to give, please help the people who have lost everything in these fires.
Several national charities have opened up to accept aid for the victims of the California fires. I know American Red Cross has an article and is accepting donations for the victims, and California Community Foundation Wildfire Relief Fund is a reputable organization to donate to.
If you are not comfortable with either of these, it should not be difficult to find a secure charity with a quick Google search if you are so inclined.
Thank you.

Can I watch a great film knowing the actresses in it were terrorized and mistreated the entire time? Can I watch a football game knowing that the players are getting brain injuries right before my eyes? Can I listen to my favorite albums anymore knowing that the singers were all beating their wives in between studio sessions? Can I eat at the new fancy taco place knowing when the building that used to be there got bulldozed eight families got kicked out of their homes so they could be replaced with condos and a chain restaurant? Can I wear the affordable clothes I bought downtown that were probably assembled in a sweatshop with child labor? Can I eat quinoa? Can I eat this burger? Can I drink this bottled water? Can I buy a car and drive to work because I’m sick of taking an hour each way on the subway? Whose bones do I stand on? Whose bones am I standing on right now?
On one hand, it’s a privilege to be able to choose to acknowledge these horrors or not–we’re going to acknowledge that privilege. On the other hand, I once attended a lecture by the explorerer-conservationist Jacques-Yves Cousteau’s daughter and son and they had a lot of opinions about what we could do to help the environment and the ocean and I talked about how in my country, we have to drink bottled water, because it’s a desert and there’s only salt water all around, but we’re contributing to pollution and all of these things…
And she looked at me and told me not to fall into the trap of “activist guilt.” I couldn’t remember the exact words, but, it was the first time I’d heard the term and it took a weight off my shoulders.
We do what we can. It’s so much better than giving up entirely or not doing anything at all because we can’t do it perfectly. It doesn’t benefit anyone in the end if we just sit around feeling guilty about every little thing in life. I’d just joined tumblr back then (haha, so like, eight or nine years ago at this point?), I was being exposed to way more than I’d ever been before (I was previously just into feminism and animal rights/wildlife conservation/environmentalism since I was a kid), and it was weighing on me.
As long as humans are humans and living flawed lives, many consumed by greed, there will not be anything in this world untouched by evil.
I usually avoid stuff that says it was made in China or other cheap looking knockoffs, out of fear of them being made in sweatshops (now, I know even a lot of big brands use those…), it’s exhausting. Then, I read something about how people who actually lived and worked in those would still buy this cheap stuff and how this shocked the foreigner reporting on it, but they just looked confused like, it’s what they can afford and them avoiding consuming it isn’t going to change the whole system from the ground-up.
… it went on about how “money talks” and choosing where to put your money still feeds the whole capitalist system and is nearly a way of comforting yourself, but you not buying doesn’t mean everyone else isn’t. What needs to be tackled is at a much higher level than any of us can reach.
Of course, I’d still, given the choice, give my money to companies I agree with and I’ll boycott what I know to support awful stuff, but I also feel no superiority over this and know now it’s not as black and white or easy as I thought it was.
This is the same reason that moral purity “you can’t enjoy [x] because it’s Problematic ™” is such nonsense, because nothing is pure. There’s something bad about everything if you dig deep enough. As long as we lived in flawed human societies we’ve got to make the best of what they offer us. If you have the choice and means, please, do support those who do good, but also, don’t beat yourself up over not living up to an unattainable ideal.
No one can. You’ll just make yourself so miserable, you either burn up and stop fighting entirely or you’ll make yourself a non-productive, depressed heap just out of a bleeding heart left unchecked. You can’t make a change to this world if you refuse to engage in it.
Have a related article with self-care tips for activists.
Purity is one of the worst, most harmful myths humans ever invented.
This isn't hate - I am genuinely confused about the types of fic that get posted where the tags/summary state that it is "explicit underage" and where the author is all "I'm going to hell for this". I know there are fics exploring the themes with sensitivity and maturity and that are NOT glorifying the abuse, but how do we deal with the underage fics (adult/child, not two teens) that are just straight up porn with (by the authors' own admission) no redeeming qualities whatsoever?
It’s not for you or for me or for anyone or any group or any committee to decide what counts as a “redeeming feature.” The darkest, most “wrong” fic I’ve written? I wrote the day after the 2016 presidential election in the US. And I might joke that I’m going to hell for that fic and that it was pure trash but the truth is I was processing the election of someone whose policies and views I find heinous and whose election proved my country wasn’t the place I thought it was. I was vulnerable and scared and terrified for my family and our future and I’d rarely felt more alone and isolated and for whatever reason in my psyche processing that meant writing rape porn - a loss-of-control fantasy where I actually WAS in control. Is that justification enough for a fic featuring violent rape and mental manipulation, that I tagged appropriately when I posted it? If so are we going to interrogate every creator and force them to reveal what trauma they were processing? If it’s not, should the work be taken down? It was an important coping mechanism for me and many other people that day (based on the comments the story got from people who read it at the time), and if my coping mechanisms are unhealthy in the views of some people? What’s it for them to say? I hurt no one, I wrote an adult story for other consenting adults, and how I handle my personal issues is my problem, not yours, nor should I or anyone else be forced to disclosures to justify ourselves.
What people write and why is ultimately no ones business but their own. Why other people read those fics is also no ones business but their own. It’s not for any third party to interrogate people to force them to justify what they’ve written, and it’s not for any third party to deem someone’s healing process inappropriate. It may not be YOUR coping mechanism but *no one ever anywhere is saying it has to be.* That’s why AO3 is amazing. The tag system is fantastic, and authors are also accessible. If you have things you’re not comfortable with or that are triggering for you, you can avoid those tags. If you aren’t sure if a fic will cross your personal lines, you can contact the author and ask. If you find out too late that there is something that wasn’t okay for you, you can leave the fic and find another, ask the author to tag it or, if it was tagged, avoid that tag in the future.
The mere existence of fic you find “irredeemable” doesn’t hurt you, isn’t an attack on you, and in fact has nothing whatsoever to do with you. In 36 years on earth and 20+ years in fandom I’ve never heard of a single reputable source demonstrating that there are risks associated with posting this kind of work. If there is more than a handful of cases of grooming done on AO3 I’d be shocked (honestly I’d be surprised if there were any but the world is bigger and stranger than any of us can imagine and I’m not dumb enough to say “never.”) Anyone underage using AO3 has deliberately chosen to seek out that content. It’s tagged and labeled. There’s no finding it by accident on AO3. On the internet as a whole? Yes. On AO3? Its extremely unlikely. It’s not the responsibility of any adult to protect other people who choose to violate the rules of consent - and make no mistake, anyone underage who clicks through those warnings and then gets upset and goes off on the author has violated the rules of consent. (Obviously if things are deceptively tagged or labeled that’s different but again that really doesn’t happen often, at least in my experience.)
Do I like more “out there” fanfiction? Snuff, extreme underage, whatever it is you claim is objectionable beyond redemption? Mostly no. It’s not my thing. And it doesn’t have to be your thing. *Move along.* If you don’t like something, don’t read it. Nope out of a fic for any reason at all or no reason whatsoever. You have the power.
If you don’t want to read it, no one is forcing you, and AO3 is remarkable for the ability it gives readers to filter and monitor their own consumption. I’ve never used a platform like it, and since I joined it, I’ve never looked back.
I have things I won’t read. I even have things I wish no one created because I personally find those things disgusting. But I am profoundly anti-censorship and I will fight for those people to have the right to write what they want on a platform like AO3 that is so well suited to labeling content correctly.
And then I won’t read it. Because I personally think it’s gross. And that’s *my* problem, and my business, not the authors.
*The existence of content I or you or anyone personally find objectionable is not an attack on you, and in fact has nothing whatsoever to do with you!*
End of story.
Thank. Fucking. God. For AO3.
It is, of course, possible to accidentally stumble across the stuff you might object to. If you just search by the fandom tag and the most recent thing posted is something you don’t like, it’s going to be up front and center in your face, and that does suck. But it’s always made abundantly clear what it contains in the tags and the description before you click on it, because the people who write the “really bad” (I use quotes because my definition is looser than most people’s, despite the fact that I’m a CSA survivor/victim myself) content don’t want to surprise you with it. It’s not something hidden 12 chapters in to a longfic described as cotton candy romance. It’s up front and honest. It’s tagged, the author confesses their perceived sins in the description, then expounds upon that in their notes, before you can even get to the body of the fic.
So in answer to the question of “how do we deal with the unredeemable stuff?” the most important thing to do is Learn To Avoid it.
If you’re more emotionally delicate than most (which is NOT a bad thing, coping abilities vary, as mentioned above) then you need to be more careful in your searches. Educate yourself on the types of tags you want to avoid, and filter them out. Search by multiple factors (search the ship name, and add your favorite tags like fluff or fake relationship, etc) so that you’ll get less results. That way you don’t even have to see the fic summaries accidentally popping up in your searches.
If you’re in a position to allow someone young onto the internet (like a parent or a caretaker or even an older internet user interacting with younger users) then give warnings and lessons. Educate newbies to the site on how to narrow their searches, how to filter undesirable things (heck it doesn’t even have to be triggery subjects! The first time I learned to filter stuff out, I immediately started filtering out highschool AUs because I don’t like YA in general), and give them the tools they need to manage their experience.
The next important step is to stop assuming that people who don’t want to see content like that are going to look for it? The fallacy of this whole argument is that if it’s there people will read it. Um, no, this is not a baseball diamond out in a cornfield. If you actually look at the stats on the “objectionable” stuff (again with the quotes because not everyone objects), they’re not fandom faves. There’s usually few hits, few kudos, few comments. There’s a small community of people who want to view such content, and they’re usually close knit and friendly with each other because they form support groups. You’re not going to find any of these fics at the top of the list if you search fandom or ship tags by kudos. They’re going to be hiding near the bottom of the list.
Censorship ALWAYS harms more than it helps, because there’s no such thing as a perfect universal definition of “objectionable”, so AO3 has created an environment where you can self censor your experience. Through their tagging system you can search or filter the bejesus out of the hundreds of thousands of works they host. Name another site which gives you those tools. If you find one, donate your dollars to them and leave AO3 in your dust.
Have you ever seen a twitter thread (or, in this case, two!) that so perfectly expressed everything you’d felt over months and months of harassment persistent? With all credit to @blackblobyellowcone, who is clearly amazing and completely gets it– not just why us women write and read the erotica that we do, but the history behind the censorship we, as a gender, have experienced. Bravo.
@shipping-isnt-morality
we’re almost in the ‘20s and dadaism is thriving, europe’s in a shambles, everyone is broke and the right wing is on the rise so i guess we really don’t learn a goddamn thing huh
This is really the post I was looking for
If you’re discouraged about the election results
Don’t be. You’re hearing media do what it does: harp on one person’s lack of enthusiasm and make it seem that that one opinion is held by thousands.
This race went precisely as I thought it would. Precisely.
And it was absolutely a massive success.
So let me tell you why, so that you feel better and can easily put down the annoying crowing that republicans are going to do, because they managed to cling to a few things.
If the votes fall as I believe they will, the democrats will have retaken the house by some 30 seats. This is impressive and somewhat unique in our country’s history. The GOP, upon taking the house originally, jerrimandered these districts in impressively screwball ways. Wherever that rigging has been overturned, the districts have gone blue. Which is, of course, why they did it. Democrats have the house now, 30ish flips in republican rugged districts. 15 of those being female candidates.
That is absolutely impressive.
A few key candidates to whom many people were paying close attention did not perform as people desired. Abrams, O’Rourke, Gillum. Well…I’m not surprised. Abrams faces absolute state wide fraud. Her opponent being the person also in charge of voter registration, withholding some 50k votes of which 70% were black. Voter intimidation. This is blatant corruption. And yet still…her race was very close. So too with Beto. Ted Crews was a presidential candidate! When he took Texas, he did so with a wide margin. Last night in Texas he was fighting tooth and nail. Gillum’s goobenatorial race for Florida was a figurative dead heat. 99% of the vote in—49% Gillum, 49.7% DeSantis. These are CLASSICALLY and FULLY republican regions in which Trump took the presidency by huge margins. That these races, with all those challenges, were as close as they were PROVES that something unprecedented happened.
3-400% voter turnout increases for a midterm election. Mostly with the youth.
But let’s talk about what it means to have the house.
Now I know you’re probably concerned about the federal judgeships that are about to pop up for consideration, and it’s true that the Senate was needed to stop approvals of those candidates, but…
Control of the house means that Democrats now take hold of some critical committees. These committees are the very ones that will be overseeing corruption allegations. Ways and Means, energy and Commerce, Financial Services, Intelligence, appropriations, foreign affairs, armed services, judiciary, transportation and infrastructure, and…government reform.
How do you feel now?
The worst political fallout of a GOP controlled government, the worst sound bites that weren’t Trump’s, the worst slaps across the face? All came from footage of those very same committees. Those committees now belong to Democrats.
Massive policy shifts also occurred in many classically conservative states—legalizing marijuana votes, Florida giving the vote back to former criminals who’ve served their time thus giving the vote back to a HUGE portion of the African-American Community that has been held in check by a racist and classicist policing method, then there were upsets in many small ways too.
I promise you…this is all excellent and it will have truly important and forceful impact. In 2020, if we can keep that same enthusiasm and rage, the entire government will shift. But that can only happen if we keep moving forward, if the candidates who won keep their noses to the grindstone and push back hard, if you and I and everyone on the ground continues to talk about this and force out bigots and greed.
Do not be discouraged. I promise you…this was an amazing election. Don’t focus on a few bright stars and think that all is lost because they fell. There is a great deal happening here, and one thing I know from being at sea—when a wave is building, there is first a terrifying shift, as the water level begins to build. The ship will begin to dip and then of a sudden, the swell will begin. The ship raises and passengers suddenly realize that the were much higher than before, with an incredible view. Then the wave crests and destroys what’s in its path.
We didn’t see a wave crest tonight. So what. That means it’s a much larger wave than we realized. It will crest in the future. But only if that fluid pressure is maintained.
This is good. It is. So long as everyone keeps working. This is good.
Calm down. Have a glass of champagne. A cup of tea. When they Trumpet all their noise…say nothing. Nothing needs to be said. You’re higher than you were with an excellent view of the ending. So relax. Don’t fret.
Listen to Simon, y’all. Simon is wise.
I don’t even live in Texas but honestly we need politicians like Beto
What’s so great about Beto?
Doesn’t take any PAC money or big donor money period. Left or right. Won’t be beholden to big money interests.
Already pledged to support Bernie’s Medicare for All bill should he win
Legalization of Marijuana, expunging records of nonviolent drug offenders.
He wouldn’t have voted for Kavanaugh, and he would have voted for the Violence Against Women reauthorization.
Expanding of LGBTQ rights.
Public works projects like extending broadband access to rural areas and funding for the rail project between Dallas-SA-Austin-Houston.
Bringing back and protecting the voting rights act.
Increasing money for the VA.
Finding healthy solutions to immigration and the boarder, just like his home town El Paso a boarder town that’s one of the safest cities in the country
Prison reform, ending for profit prisons.
If people under age 35 show up to the polls, Beto can win. There are enough young voters to get rid of Ted Cruz, who is a truly terrible person.
Vote in Texas!!!
The point of voting blue in 2018 isn’t to make the US perfect. We cannot accomplish that in one fell swoop. There’s gerrymandering, voter apathy, voter suppression, and generations of older party-line fucks we have to deal with.
Voting blue in 2018 is to make it less immediately threatening for PoC, LGBT+ people, the disabled, and any other marginalized demographic. It’s a stopgap against Republicans who are aligned with Nazis, white supremacists, and sexual abusers.
Correcting politics in the United States is going to take decades of new voters staying on top of politics and not falling prey to apathy, like our predecessors.
People telling you not to waste a vote on 3rd Party this midterm aren’t saying “never vote 3rd party.” Republicans have united behind one utterly heinous front. We need to unite behind Democrats, for the time being.
Repeating this key sentence:
“Voting blue in 2018 is to make it less immediately threatening for PoC, LGBT+ people, the disabled, and any other marginalized demographic [WOMEN]. It’s a stopgap against Republicans who are aligned with Nazis, white supremacists, and sexual abusers.”
Reblogging in the memory of everyone who said to me, 2 years ago, “how much damage can he do?” and “it’s like choosing the lesser of two evils” and “you’re overreacting” and “he won’t get elected it’ll never happen”.
For those of you who suffered in trying to pause at the right time, this is the image that flashes briefly in “LET’S MISBEHAVE”:
Do not just assume that the Democrats are going to win…the only way we can GUARANTEE that the Democrats make gains in these midterms is for people to go out and vote
Whatever the polls say, get out there and vote democrat, whereever you are
Do not just assume that they’ll “Definitely win” and so it doesn’t matter if you go out and vote or not
Remember how many people didn’t vote in 2016 because Hillary was “definitely going to win?”
Vote.
Vote like you will be the tie-breaker
VOTE LIKE YOU WILL BE THE TIE-BREAKER.
