A large dumpster near a wall can often be moved so that flipping up the lids creates an angled shelter to stay dry

HYGIENE

A membership to the YMCA is usually only 10$, which has a shower, and sometimes laundry machines and lockers.

Public libraries have bathrooms you can use

Dollar stores carry low-end soaps and deodorant etc.

Wet wipes are all purpose and a life saver

Local beaches, go for a quick swim

Some truck stops have showers you can pay for

Staying clean is the best way to prevent disease, and potentially get a job to get back on your feet

Wanted to add to definitely network with churches in your area, regardless of denomination. Most of the ones in your protestant circles do community outreach in some form. Usually, it’s a food bank and a share closet (free donated clothes). I’ve also known many to specifically provide hygiene products like soap, shampoo, tampons, pads, adult diapers, wet wipes, etc.

In my area, St Vincent De Paul is known for getting people clean clothes for interviews as well as helping with clothes once you have the job. There site also talks about programs to help you if you are on the verge of eviction and houselessness.

Also, if there is a Sikh Gurdwara in your area, see if they do meals. Especially in bigger urban areas, they often will have healthy meals for free. Please read for more on Langar.

Also check with your fraternal orders; Elks, Kiwanis, Lions, etc. Depending on your status they may have special programs and charities for you. I can only speak directly to the Elks but they have programs for veterans specifically. I was briefly a member but am no longer affiliated with them. My problems with them do not affect the help they provide homeless vets.

If you are rural, county parks are often the cheapest to camp at; in my area the closest ST Park is ~$35/night and county is $8/night both for a tent space. The downside is I’ve found county parks often don’t have showers or great water access.

If you can, often RV parks will allow smaller pull behind trailers for longer term rentals. This was basically what I ended up doing when my family was houseless. These can run the gambit; most are clean but snobby but there are a few real dumps out there. The pro with a dumpy place though is usually the people running it have more empathy. These are good options if you need a place to park a camper/trailer/RV/van? for a bit while trying to find someone to stay with. I’ve found you usually get only two of the following at them: laundry, shower, convenience store, or a bus stop.
