so I'm writing a Bleach fanfic (that I may or may not post) SO HC/Lore time!!
One of my oldest Uryu hc's was that he played Piano, I mean c'mon, long slender fingers, Archer hands, the piano being seen as a sophisticated, refined instrument? He wasn't a prodigy or anything, esp cause he threw himself into both his Quincy and normal school studies, but he knew how to play! (Also, just LOOK at the Ishida residence there's 100% at least TWO pianos in there, even if no one plays)
BUT then Cour 2's op had Uryu holding a violin and HOLY SHIT that's also SUCH a good fit for him! SOO
Headcanon! that as a child Uryu took both violin and piano classes, though he got farther in violin. Again, not like a prodigy or anything, esp since he really threw himself into his training, but he can still play! He was forced to take lessons because-
✨Ishida Family Lore time!✨ It was sort of a tradition for every Ishida Family member to learn and master a skill in the Arts. They were a well-respected Quincy family after all, they had to keep up a "sophisticated" appearance. So even after leaving to the world of the living, Izumi (Uryu's grandmother) insisted on keeping up the practice (and his grandfather Soken too, I guess, but less so)
Fun fact! the violin Uryu would use when he played was Ryuken's! Ryuken WAS a prodigy with the violin, and while he doesn't play anymore (nor did he have much of a passion for it when he was younger) he grew to like it more as Kanae expressed she liked how he played, mostly because he played in a way that was so him, but was still more expressive than he usually let himself be. While he let Uryu use his violin when he was able to use an adult one, Uryu never developed a passion for it. Instead it sits in it's case on a desk in Ryuken's room. Despite never really loving the violin, he meticulously cleans it and keeps it in good condition as he thinks of how much Kanae enjoyed his playing.
Izumi paints. All over the residence there's still her art pieces hung up, mostly collecting dust since Ryuken didn't hire any house help after everything went down, and Uryu only ever cleans up after himself. They were mostly oil paintings of landscapes, though all really beautiful and precise, always a duller color palette and reflecting the way she viewed the world (and her life; sue me, I like exploring complicated housewife/matriarch characters)
Soken I don't have much for, but I like to think he suits the flute very well. Maybe not a modern one western audiences may think of though. Like I'm not knowledgeable on wind instruments as much, but I imagine he plays a slightly more traditional, maybe older style flute. While he can play the flute well (and enjoys it!) it wasn't really much of a passion so much as a past-time. Instead, his ACTUAL art skill was Calligraphy. He had the most beautiful calligraphy pieces, and while Uryu was never the best at it, Soken enjoyed spending the afternoon with his grandson teaching him about calligraphy and drinking their tea.
Now you may be thinking, Test, you said Uryu learned violin and piano for his art skill right?('Test' is what you can use as name for me btw) Well yes that's what Izumi wanted him to learn and got him lessons for. But we all know Uryu's real skill and passion is with cloth, y'know, Crafts!
When he was really young, he would sit by his mother's side and watch her sew. Even though he was too young to try himself, and probably too young to really understand the process, he would sit by her side and listen to her explain her process. He'd watch for however long it was just to sit by her side and enjoy her company. He was old enough to pick up the gist of it, and really after Kanae married Ryuken she still helped out with the chores and everything, even though she was part of the family then, so Uryu would watch her patch up any holes in clothes too sentimental to get rid of, or a really simple fix that'd be wasteful to throw. And being his mom and technically having access to (at least Ryuken's) family funds, she was able to just straight up make some of Uryu's clothes. Things like Uryu's Quincy outfit he'd train in with his grandfather, things that would be more personal for them.
As a result, Uryu used what knowledge he gained and studied on his own after she died, having to fix and make his own clothes that he couldn't just buy. He found that not only did he feel closer to his mom, but he also really enjoyed it! As well as just having a natural talent for sewing, hence his speed and ease in the show's events (((ALSO maybe it has something to do with the abilities he has in my au idk maybe maybe not))) Sewing and fashion are things he actually finds comfort in, and often likes to de-stress by coming up with new designs for clothes or practicing other forms of crafts. He learned how to cross-stitch and embroider (yes I know cross-stitching is a type of embroidery), and has plenty of designs that he does when he's stressed or bored. He's currently in the process of learning how to knit, though with school and then literal war and helping Ichigo and everything, it's slow-going. Anyways Uryu has a natural affinity to things with thread or cloth, a talent he finds he enjoys and totally doesn't have any other significant meaning or ties to his powers. nope. not at all. totally is not related to his powers or anything.
Anyways I just needed to get this out, high chance no one is going to see this, but I really like the idea of the Ishida family, prestigious and important in Quincy society, has to make sure they maintain their reputation and status. They need to have some form of "sophisticated" skill like music or art, they need to hold themselves a certain way and speak a certain way. Idk about canon, but in my AU the Quincy are from both German and Japanese descent, so they have to be able to speak in both languages. They are accustomed to older, more traditional Quincy techniques, but still learn and try to master the newer stuff, though Soken hadn't wanted to teach Uryu some of Yhwach's more recent, destructive/more dangerous techniques. Idk expanding the Quincy world and lore in my AU just scratches an itch in my brain that I can't really describe
