If you look at Changing Channels closely, you'll notice that Sam wasn't affected when he and Dean thought the Trickster was a regular angel.
Sam was shocked, however, when the angel in front of him turned out to be Gabriel.
Headcanon:
As a kid, Sam prayed to Gabriel specifically.
He first read about it in a children's book his religious primary school teacher kept in her classroom. That Gabriel the Archangel was a Messenger of God.
And according to little Sammy's logic, God was too busy, because everyone was praying to him. So it was only reasonable to pray to someone who could hear him better and could then send a message to God and back, right? So Sam prayed.
And it worked.
"Archangel Gabriel, I'm praying for you to keep my dad safe." John returned each time, alive.
"Archangel Gabriel, I want Dean to have the best birthday." John changed his mind at the last minute and took Dean to a movie theatre, then bought him a cake for his 11th birthday.
"Archangel Gabriel, I wish Dean stopped being so sad all the time." Dean found a 100$ bill lying around and used it to buy them enough food to last a week. Dean was upset because dad was gone and they were running out of money.
"Angels are looking out for dad, he'll be fine," Sam reassured his older brother one day, trying to calm Dean down.
"Angels don't exist, Sammy. If they did, why didn't they protect mom?" Dean cut him off really quickly. That hurt.
Sam had nothing to say to that, and he didn't want to bring angels up to Dean again – but he continued praying.
Every night, before sleep, he'd pray to Gabriel and talk about his day. How he's thankful that everyone in his family is alive, despite what they do.
When Sam tried to run as a teen, he prayed to Gabriel too. "Archangel Gabriel, please let me find strength to leave and have a normal life."
Four months later, Sam got a letter of acceptance from Stanford and a full scholarship.
Sam knew Gabriel was out there, and he was convinced, even after meeting Zach and other jerks, Sam had hope.
Just to meet Gabriel like this – knowing that it was him who responded each time, and that he knew about the plan all along.
That maybe Gabriel wanted Sam to have that 'normal' for 4 years in college and it was an act of kindness. - But did he know about Jess?
That maybe that Mystery Spot lesson was to protect him and prepare for the worst. - But why didn't he say it right away?
That maybe Gabriel cared about him all these years. - Then why does he want me to say "yes" to Lucifer?...
Does he really want to? Or is he forced to accept this, like me?

Every single fic update there is an author trying frantically to find the right balance between a nonchalant aside of "leave a comment if you enjoyed =)" and clinging desperately to the coat tails of a random stranger, dragging along behind them on the street wailing "Please, please! I have to know what you thought! I'm desperate to talk to people about this! Ask me about the alliterative repetition! Ask me about the symbolism!"
Supernatural season 16. It opens at a bar. A ridiculously hot woman begins to flirt with one man, and then another. The two men begin to fight over the woman, and soon, she egs more of them on. It turns into a drunken brawl, and as she exits the bar, the woman morphs into gabriel, smirking. He turns to the camera, and asks, "Didya miss me?"
The entire season consists of him trying to stop the events of 1518 and on, flirting with Sam, trying to get dean and cas together without not insulting dean, being direct, or sending cas to the empty. Lots of sex jokes. It's all filmed deadpool style, Gabe breaking the 4th wall ninety precent of the time, but Cas will occasionally do it in passing, and it will confuse sam and dean to no end.

The last thing Cas expected to see when he walked into the Bunker's kitchen is Dean in there at the stove, cooking some bacon. His hair is damp, he's got just a towel wrapped around his waist, and he's singing loudly off-key while he pokes sizzling bacon with a spatula.
Cas stands frozen to the spot, staring at Dean's back.
When Dean turns around to plate up his breakfast he nearly drops the pan. "Jesus, Cas!" He seems twitchy and fidgety and places the pan down so he can make sure the towel is secure. "You uh, said you weren't coming back until tomorrow."
Cas stalks forwards and Dean moves with him, keeping his back facing away.
But Cas knows what he saw, and when he grabs Dean's shoulder and spins him around he gets a close view of the six lines of red scars on Dean's back. Six long scarred gashes.
Although Dean tries to shrug it off, Cas recognizes those lines and their placements.
"Michael's wings..."
Dean shrugs him off. "That archangel douchebag thought he'd leave me with a permanent parting gift, I guess. No matter how many times you've healed me since, they won't go."
Cas takes a long breath through his nose and out through his mouth. Even though he doesn't technically need to breathe the action is grounding. The fury fizzing under his skin eases slightly.
Cas places his palm flat against Dean's back and his eyes glow as he uses his grace, attempting to remove the scars. A high pitched wailing starts and Dean twitches violently as Cas ramps up the power.
"Hey hey hey, knock it off."
The glow fades, the sound stops. The scars remain.
"He had no right," Cas says, seething. "He had no right to mark you like that."
"Yeah, well, he did anyway, and I have to live with it, so can we just pretend you never saw anything and move on." Dean goes to walk away. He's lost his appetite for breakfast and now he just wants to cover up.
Cas reaches out and gently places his hand over the old handprint scar, faded but still there. Dean freezes.
"Why didn't you say anything?" Cas asks quietly.
"They're on my back, man, I forget about them half the time," Dean snaps, the lie clear in his voice.
Cas frowns in concern and sympathy, and ghosts the fingertips of his other hand over the edges of the lines on Dean's skin. "Do they hurt?"
Dean deflates a little, the tension in his shoulders releasing. "Nah. Hurt like a bitch at the time, but nothing now. They're itchy as hell sometimes though."
"I can't heal them," Cas says with regret. He pauses and adds, almost hesitantly, "but I can... override them."
"What?"
"If I possessed you - I could manifest my own wings and reopen the wounds... Then the scars would be... mine instead."
