if an elf and a dwarf fucked, would it make a human?
Going by older editions of D&D they made an awkward ugly thing called a Dwelf, which usually combined the worst aspects of both races personalities and physical construction.
… yeah, a human
i am very adamant that elves are far less restrictive about gender and relationships than humans
this post cost me a follower. good. reblog for non-binary polyamorous elves. ignore for cisheteronormativity.
People often ask whether they should use Koenig’s made up words in real life.
He says yes, because all words are made up in the beginning.
He also quotes lexicographer Erin McKean: “Anybody who’s read a children’s book knows that love makes things real. If you love a word, use it—that makes it real. Being in the dictionary is an arbitrary distinction; it doesn’t make a word any more real than any other way. If you love a word, it becomes real.”

A small personal comic I’ve been working on about art and perspective. With a example I often use when my friends talk to me about being tired of their own art. Support on Patreon for future comics
In the near future, you are making dinner because you are about to meet your girlfriend’s dad for the first time. All you have in the kitchen is cooked frozen steaks. In walks your girlfriend and her dad, Gordon Ramsey.
You feel the blood drain from your face. You knew her father was a chef, but not like THIS. Mr. Ramsay asks what’s for dinner and you throw your girlfriend a look filled with terror. Amusement dances in her eyes, but she gives you an encouraging nod.
“A-actually, Mr. Ramsay, sir, I could use some, uh, advice. If you wouldn’t mind?”
Gordon stares at you for a long moment, face expressionless. Your heart hammers in your chest, sure that you’re about to die. Suddenly Gordon beams at you and reaches out to clap you on the shoulder. You can’t quite hide a flinch, but he ignores it.
“That’s great to hear!” Gordon tells you. “There’s nothing wrong with admitting you need help. I’ve met plenty of professional chefs who refuse to acknowledge they’re in over their heads and most of them end up making a mess of everything. Come on, let’s see what you’ve got!”
The next while is a blur of terror, awe, and bewilderment. You’d never realized your kitchen contained so many things before. Gordon does make a snide comment about the pre-cooked steaks, but then he coaches you through ways to “beef it up” with a marinade, spices, and side dishes that include frozen veggies and a box of rice you’d forgotten you had.
At one point you’re close to tears, but Gordon tells a Dad Joke so terrible you can’t help but laugh. The end result of your efforts is far from restaurant quality, but it’s easily one of the best meals you’ve ever made and Gordon Ramsay, the Grand Master of Chefs, seems to be enjoying it. He’s even smiling. And making jokes that aren’t at your expense. As the haze of terror begins to fade you realize that the two of you have bonded. Your girlfriend catches your eye and winks. You’ve passed the test.

^Haiku^bot^0.4. Sometimes I do stupid things (but I have improved with syllables!). Beep-boop!
constant mood recently
describe colours to me
Red is a spark. As green signals the sun’s return in spring, red is the most raucous hue of life–in the ruddy skin of newborns, or the torn throat of a animal. Red is the color of life consuming life.
It’s robust health, a vigorous walk tinging the cheeks; newness, bounty. It’s heat and pain. Red demands attention.
A red flower snags your eye like nothing else. A red piece of clothing tells you that the wearer is shouting to the world. When the winter cold starts to recede, the sap of a tree moves sluggishly, perhaps an inch a week, turning the branches faintly red.
Embarrassment is the dull, aching scarlet of embers in your stomach.
A violin makes lovely red noises when played well–the tension in its strings rubs the air crimson.
I saw the moon turn red in 2008. It seemed suddenly heavy, more solid than it had ever been before, staining the snow a deep dirty gold. In that moment Earth became an alien planet. Space shrank to the dimensions and depth of a painting and the stars looked like ghosts.
White moonlight shows the holes in reality; this red moonlight filled them in and turned the world inward, toward a private dream.
Red hearts show that love is not dead.
Blue is emptiness. While red and green seem full of energy, blue is hollow, motionless, think lakes frozen thick, or the sky right after sundown.
It’s a heavy weight, dragging on limbs and sapping energy from them, silent and abandoned. It’s cold and harsh. Blue seeps in quietly until it surrounds you and commands your attention completely.
A blue flower is the one your eyes keep coming back to when they tire of the red one. A blue piece of clothing says “Come here, I’ll give you rest.”. When the last autumn leave have fallen off the trees, ice sneaks in unnoticed , tinting everything slightly blue.
Deep seated anger is the soft, slow moving creep of ice in you chest.
A clarinet makes gorgeous blue noises when played well, air passing through it carrying cobalt tones.
There’s a reason “Once in a blue moon” means infrequent. It symbolises something so rare, so often absent, that it could only ever be portrayed by blue.
Blue hearts show that love is lone gone.
Red is excitement, it’s blood, the thing that is life, it is burning in a good way, it is the pain of being alive, it is intensity Orange is bounce, it’s the skip in my step, it’s the animal instinct in punching a wall, an expression, it’s taste, oranges and mangoes, it’s love for life Yellow is cheer its laughter and screaming, it’s a huge grin, when life gives you lemons you make lemonade Green is peace it is soft it is love it is alive and the fragility of such life, it is growth it is vulnerability Blue is stardust, it is the cosmos, it is calm and vital, it is staring at the stars in the night sky, it is those same stars reflected in your eyes Purple is enlightenment, heightened sense, a kind of magic a kind of pain, godlike White is everything and black is nothing
this makes me so happy.
IT’S NOT ‘PEEKED’ MY INTEREST
OR ‘PEAKED’
BUT PIQUED
‘PIQUED MY INTEREST’
THIS HAS BEEN A CAPSLOCK PSA
THIS IS ACTUALLY REALLY USEFUL THANK YOU
ADDITIONALLY:
YOU ARE NOT ‘PHASED’. YOU ARE ‘FAZED.’
IF IT HAS BEEN A VERY LONG DAY, YOU ARE ‘WEARY’. IF SOMEONE IS ACTING IN A WAY THAT MAKES YOU SUSPICIOUS, YOU ARE ‘WARY’.
ALL IN ‘DUE’ TIME, NOT ‘DO’ TIME
‘PER SE’ NOT ‘PER SAY’
THANK YOU
BREATHE - THE VERB FORM IN PRESENT TENSE
BREATH - THE NOUN FORM
THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE
WANDER - TO WALK ABOUT AIMLESSLY
WONDER - TO THINK OF IN A DREAMLIKE AND/OR WISTFUL MANNER
THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE (but one’s mind can wander)
DEFIANT - RESISTANT DEFINITE - CERTAIN
WANTON - DELIBERATE AND UNPROVOKED ACTION (ALSO AN ARCHAIC TERM FOR A PROMISCUOUS WOMAN)
WONTON - IT’S A DUMPLING THAT’S ALL IT IS IT’S A FUCKING DUMPLING
BAWL- TO SOB/CRY
BALL- A FUCKING BALL
YOU CANNOT “BALL” YOUR EYES OUT
AND FOR FUCK’S SAKE, IT’S NOT “SIKE”; IT’S “PSYCH”. AS IN “I PSYCHED YOU OUT”; BECAUSE YOU MOMENTARILY MADE SOMEONE BELIEVE SOMETHING THAT WASN’T TRUE.
THANK YOU.
*slams reblog*
IT’S ‘MIGHT AS WELL’. ‘MIND AS WELL’ DOES NOT MAKE GRAMMATICAL SENSE.
SLEIGHT - DEXTERITY, ARTIFICE, CRAFT (FROM ‘SLY’) SLIGHT - VERY LITTLE, FRAIL, DELICATE
IT’S ‘SLEIGHT OF HAND’.
CAN I ADD TO THIS TOO?
IT’S NOT ‘COULD OF’, THAT DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE WHATSOEVER. IT’S ‘COULD HAVE’. SAME APPLIES TO ‘SHOULD HAVE’.
And this is why my students look at me as though I’m the devil when I try to tell them that no i’m not lying this really is a thing
IT’S ‘COULDN’T CARE LESS’ NOT ‘COULD CARE LESS’ IF YOU COULD CARE LESS THAT MEANS YOU CARE
VOILA - ROUGHLY TRANSLATES AS “LOOK AT THAT” (VOI-LA)
VIOLA - AN INSTRUMENT SIMILAR TO THE VIOLIN
WALLAH - MEANINGLESS GIBBERISH AND YOU JUST MADE SOMEONE CRY
HOW ABOUT THESE?
CLOTH - A PIECE OF MATERIAL LIKE COTTON
CLOTHE - TO PUT CLOTHES ON SOMEONE
CLOTHES - THE THINGS TO MAKE SURE YOU’RE NOT NAKED
ALSO IT’S FREAKING “REIN IN YOUR EMOTIONS” LIKE WHAT YOU WOULD DO TO A HORSE NOT “REIGN IN YOUR EMOTIONS” BECAUSE THAT IS THE TIME OF A RULING FOR ROYALTY THE IDIOM IS BASED OFF OF HORSE STUFF!
oh we doing this?? bet!
fiancé/fiancée are loan words from french and are therefore gendered (yeah i know it sucks, blame latin). the former is masculine, so used for male/masc people. femmes use the latter.
in the same vein, widow = femme, widower = masc
(sorry, i’m not currently aware of any gender neutral terms for either of the above terms except maybe betrothed or affianced for engaged people or the bereaved for the Left Behind, but they sound so horribly outdated so idk)
speaking of veins!
vein = blood vessel that carries blood back to the heart, or, in the way i used it above, having a distinctive style or tendency
vain = self-absorbed, conceited
conceited = self-absorbed, vain
conceded = withdrew, gave up, forfeited (i.e., “conceded the point”)
ancestors = those who came before (harriet tubman is my ancestor)
descendants = those who came after (i am a descendant of harriet tubman)
supine = face up, prone = face down
affect = to impact or change (or, in a psychological context, one’s expression of emotion as demonstrated through facial expression, tone of voice, or body language)
effect = the result of a change (or, in verb form, to influence, as in “to effect change”)
preceded = went before (”she preceded him into the room” means she went into the room before he did)
proceeded (i happen to loathe this word but whatever, it’s my issue) = to move forward or to begin or continue a course of action (”she proceeded to jump” is a horrible and jarring way–my issue, sorry–to say she began to jump)
rein = to curb, as in “rein in your emotions”
reign = to rule, like a king (also, a ruler’s period of rule, i.e., beyoncé’s reign is far from over)
shudder = like a shiver, usu. in revulsion or fear
shutter = to close, as in a business when it’s bankrupt. also, a type of window covering
bear with me = be patient with me (alternatively, there is a large ursine animal with me)
bare with me = naked with me
“no one” is two words
so is “a lot”
it is “deep-seated,” not “deep seeded.” the latter applies to gardening.
it was mentioned above, sort of, but the abbreviation of could have is “could’ve.” see also “should’ve,” and “would’ve.”
crap i forgot:
discreet = inconspicuous, low key
discrete = separate, individual
i can’t believe none of y'all mentioned poring/pouring. poring means you’re looking over something, poring over documents or a map or whatever. pouring means you’re dumping some shit on some other shit, pouring water, pouring sand. if you’re pouring over a map i always picture a really sweaty individual who forgot their deodorant that morning.
Ordinance: Some kind of local law
Ordnance: Debris or explosives that haven’t exploded yet and could pose a danger
Internment: Imprisonment
Interment: Burial
Ruckus: Loud noise or commotion
Raucous: A verb describing something that’s wild or out of control, like a party
Hanged, when referring to a person: Someone executed by hanging
Hung, when referring to a person: Well-endowed
Pair, pare and pear are all different
Also, on a slightly different note, it’s “buses” not “busses” and there are no As in cemetery.
Scared: afraid of something
Scarred: a mark left behind from an injury; usually a cut, scratch, or burn. Or in reference to emotional scarring, to be still effected by a traumatic event (basically a play on how a physical scar is left behind even when the wound is healed)
Also choke/choking/choked is spelt like that, not with a ck
