Hi, could I get a litter box related suggestion from you? I have a kitten (about 8 months old) who has been pooping right next to the litter box. We have 2 litter boxes that are shared between my 2 male cats and her. The kitten has no problem pooping in the box if it hasn't been used and it's nice and fresh. The boxes are also cleaned everyday. How could we go about making her not poop outside. I suspect she's doing it because she doesn't like sharing the box with my other 2 cats. Thank you!

(Here is my obligatory “take your cat to the vet if they are using outside the litter box” - However, going just BESIDE the litter box is typically a sign that the cat really WANTS to use the box, but SOMETHING is keeping them from doing it).

Biggest thing I can think of is amount of litter boxes. Rule of thumb is amount of cats you have +1, so if you have 3 cats, you should have at least 4 litter boxes. If they use the litter when it’s clean, chances are that’s your biggest issue, keeping it clean. Multiple litter boxes will give you more time between scooping, too. But scooping every day and cleaning the litter box out once every week or two weeks (depending on the cats) will help. 

Try playing around with litters. Typically cats dislike scented litter (while some tolerate it, they generally don’t prefer it), Because a box that smells too strongly - even if it smells too strongly of what we can consider “good” smelling things - will still deter a cat.

Cats also prefer open top boxes. A dome, while good at keeping litter and smells in - does just that - it keeps the smells IN. Typically their stools will remain soft for longer, and smelly for longer, which will in turn discourage a cat from using it.  The dome may also make the cat feel trapped, with only one entrance or exit, so they may not feel safe, even though it’s covered. 

And, let’s be honest, sometimes cats just MISS. My boy Heimdall will stand in the litter box, totally where he’s supposed to be, and he rockets one out over the side. By all means, he THINKS he’s in the box (bless him), and we helped him by getting him a bigger box so he can fit better.

Thank you for the responce! I think the litter its self might be a problem too since its scented so I'll try switching to a non scented one, see if that helps and if not then it's time to get more litter boxes!
