For real. I see people saying “oh Maus traumatized me.” not to be a dick, but GOOD. It should traumatize you. It should be upsetting. The Shoah shouldn’t be some sanitized thing that is comfortable and fun to read about.
Imagine, just for a moment, that you’ve grown up being told that the things that happened in Maus could happen to you at any time. Any. Time. From the time you could understand being told about the atrocities. This book is a sliver of the trauma that lives between Jewish generations. Then imagine it being taken away because it makes people sad.
I am so fucking sick of people using being upset or uncomfortable as an excuse to ignore and make excuses for hatred. Maus is, in my opinion, the best resource to educate people of pretty much all ages about the horrors of the Shoah. It’s format is accessible to everyone, even people who “don’t like to read” and will ignore other assigned reading. It doesn’t shy away from the truth of things, but it doesn’t romanticize. It talks about the “after”, what is happening now. It is a beautiful, terrible, painful book and banning it because it is “age inappropriate” is a tragedy. An absolute fucking shanda.

Back when you were young, you were blissfully unaware about everything happening around you. Serious, bad, and terrible things would happen and you could not grasp the importance.
Back when you were young, you were not in touch with everyone. You didn't know what was happening across the ocean. It didn't matter, it wasn't where you lived, why should you care?
Now, we can be updated ever second of every day of everything that's happening. Now you realize and recognize all the terrible things that have happened and are happening now. When you keep saying, "when I was young", you're trying to grasp at the obliviousness that blessed your child mind.
Sometimes you don't have to say, "when I was young"/"when I was your age." All you have to do is give advice, listen, learn, understand to leave that talk out unless it seems necessary. Saying that shit will only make young people not want to listen to or follow advice. But, you also have to listen to them equally. They are people too. And... in the end, they will be here when all of us are too old or long gone.
Learn from the previous generation... but also equally learn from the future generation(s).

they try to convince you to get over yourself and to not think of yourself too highly
they make you feel like your opinions, actions or emotions are stupid, and like you should be ashamed for expressing anything to anyone
they pick up on your vulnerabilities then use them against you in critical times
they say things they know will hurt you, to get to you
they hurt you to prove their point and think it’s legit reason to cause you pain
they talk down to you, act as if you’re not capable of making good decisions, scare you into not doing as you wanted, make you feel inadequate and inexperienced in comparison to them
they don’t care if they tire you out with their problems
they don’t care if you’ve already given them more than you comfortably can give
they don’t find you worthy of their compassion and care
they don’t think you’ve deserved their attention or admiration
they neglect you and then come back to you when they need you
they act as if it’s normal for you to spend much more energy and time on them than they do in return
they expect unlimited compassion, kindness, energy, time and care from you, and act as if it’s the least you could do for them
they don’t even consider going that length in return
if they forget, even for a second, that you’re a human being
they’re not to be trusted.
