fandom etiquette as a whole died when people who didn’t grow up on fandoms became stans during lockdown, yes, but why am i seeing people openly mocking fics on twitter. why am i seeing screenshots of fics with captions like “bro what is this 😭.” why am i seeing people mock fic writers for not knowing how sports or theater or college or any other organization operates in the real world.
“college is absolutely nothing like this” “why are we writing four people on the team scoring a hat trick in one game” “so tech work is nothing like this, hope that helps!”
if you don’t like a fic, and if you can’t suspend your belief enough to enjoy a fic that exaggerates or ignores real-world orgs, you don’t have to read it. you don’t have to screenshot it and put it on blast for twitter. you don’t have to post a link to it in the replies. the back button is literally there on your phone. it’s not giving baby’s first fandom anymore, it’s giving entitled asshole and it isn’t as cute as you think it is.
“ao3 always receives more funds and donations than what they ask for” yeah that’s because people love a place that actually protects all fanfics, art and artists against censorship, purity culture and capitalism. shocking, I know
i think because of the whole "writers write for themselves" notion that's becoming increasingly popularized, people forget that we still thrive off interaction and kindness. i write for myself but kudos and comments and bookmarks and really any sort of interaction with my fics genuinely motivates me to keep writing and keep sharing my works.
“Sort by kudos” wrong. “sort by bookmarks” wrong. Pick a date range and sort alphabetically by author. Find the insane people who wrote 30 fics during a 3 month hiatus for their favorite show. Go forth.
The biggest fic milestone (in my opinion) isn’t a bunch of kudos or hits but receiving fanart based on your story. Like I would kill a man to see fanart of my fics. Or even just see people talking about them

To get out of her parents matchmaking Caitlyn pulls Vi into a whirlwind of a fake romance.
“You want me to help mess up your date? Hell yeah!”
-> Read on Ao3
Caitlyn’s parents had called her into the living room to have some afternoon tea. This by itself was not unusual. What was unusual however, was the way neither of them would meet her eyes from the moment she entered the room. Her mother poured her tea as Caitlyn moved to sit down at the far end of the couch opposite of her.
Caitlyn finally broke the silence hanging heavily in the room. Clearly something was up. “What is this about?”
“Well darling… we just thought it might be about time you settle down.” Her mother took a sip from her cup of tea before setting it down on the coffee table in front of her. The sun, shining in through the large windows, lit up the room. The light glanced on the metal ornamentation of their furniture with a golden gleam.
The words caught Caitlyn off guard. Her own teacup, a beautiful porcelain thing, froze on the way to her lips. She blinked, her mouth hanging open slightly.
When her parents had sat her down to talk, she hadn’t expected anything like this. Though, she supposed she was now of the same age her parents were when they got together.
Before she spoke she set down her cup of tea next to her mother’s.
“Settle down?” she asked. Even as she tried to stop it, her voice raised as she talked. “I’m barely an adult!”
Her mother frowned, folding her hands in her lap. “Caitlyn, you’re 21. We’re not saying you have to get married and have children right this instant, just—”
“We want you to get out there, meet some people,” her father finished.
“I don't need to meet new people. I know plenty of people.” Caitlyn couldn’t keep the incredulity out of her voice. She avoided looking her parents in the eyes and kept her gaze glued to the tea leaves settling in the bottom of her tea cup. A frown settled on her face.
“Darling, you know what I mean,” her mother replied.
“Just let us set you up on a couple dates,” her father added. His eyes brightened with an idea. “The Arvino family’s got a son your age, his name is Hugo. You could ask him?”
Her mother leaned forward, a mischievous look on her face, “He’s handsome.”
Cait was stunned. She’d met Hugo briefly at a ball some time ago and their interaction had left a bitter taste in her mouth. Honestly he was the last person she’d want to date but she could hardly tell them she was head over heels in love with her best friend and could not give less of a damn about anyone else. She really didn't want to have to go on some date with a snobby rich guy, but she couldn’t think of another way to dissuade her parents from the notion that she needed to ‘get out there’. Maybe if she went on a date they’d let go of it. It would have to be one messed up date though, to ensure they wouldn't make her go on another one and with Hugo a disastrous date was all but guaranteed…
Caitlyn sighed. It didn’t seem like she had much of a choice. “I’ll go on one date.”
Her mom clapped her hands once, with finality. “Wonderful, we’ll set it up!”
***
Caitlyn unlocked the door to Vi and Powder’s apartment with a click. Vi had given her a spare key forever ago. With how much time she spent at their place, it just made sense. She slammed the door closed, and stepped inside.
Their apartment was messy in a cozy kind of way. Powder’s various inventions, metal little things covered in bright pink and blue paints, were littered all over the room. Trinkets were strewn across the windowsill, side table, proudly displayed on shelves when they did prove successful. Specks of dust sparkled in the light that streamed past the heavy cream curtains.
When she stepped into the main room, Cait saw Vi sitting comfortably in a dark red armchair, holding a bowl of cereal. She was dressed in a worn out looking shirt and a pair of comfortable-looking sweatpants. Even like this, still half-asleep and lounging around on a weekend, Vi was a work of art to behold. The tattoos that trailed up her muscular arms disappeared beneath her grey short-sleeves and led towards her back... Caitlyn longed to see the full extent of her tattoos, to study the artwork that curled around her body and accentuated her muscles.
Vi, startled by Cait’s sudden appearance, dropped her spoon into the milk with a splash.
Cait realizing she’d been staring for too long, took off her coat, turned to face Vi and said, “Vi, you won't believe what my parents are making me do!”
She slipped out of her shoes and headed straight for the couch, letting herself collapse onto it face forward with a groan.
Vi picked her spoon back out of her bowl, now dripping with milk and finally turned to Caitlyn. “What’s up?”
Caitlyn turned on her side to face Vi. Face smashed into the cushion, she grumbled, “They’ve decided to matchmake me.”
Vi almost choked on a mouthful of cereal, eyes wide. After a moment, she managed to swallow and wiped her mouth clean with the hem of her shirt exposing a strip of skin.
“They’re what?” she demanded. Her voice came out a little strangled. She took her bowl of cereal, set it down on the coffee table between them and sat up, giving Caitlyn her full attention.
Grabbing the closest pillow, Caitlyn hugged it to her chest. The fabric was fuzzy and purple, soft in her arms. “Apparently, I need to settle down already.”
”You’re hardly marrying age!” Vi insisted, arms outstretched in a gesture of outrage. Her tattoos caught Cait’s eye, the artwork shifting as Vi’s muscles moved.
“That’s what I said!” Caitlyn retorted, running her hand through the soft fibers of the pillow for comfort.
Vi lowered her gaze, eyes fixed on the carpet, voice tentative, “Are you gonna go along with it?”
“I tried getting out of it,” Caitlyn groaned.
She almost wanted Vi to be jealous, to urge her not to go, to just walk over there and kiss her already. But that wasn’t gonna happen. Vi ran her hand through her hair with an indiscernible look in her eyes.
“…And?” her attention was fixed solely on Caitlyn now, hanging on to her every word. A spark bloomed in Caitlyn’s chest at being caught in the focus of Vi’s gaze.
She brushed it off and continued, “No way out,”
“I agreed to go on one date,” Caitlyn sighed, dejected.
“Oh.”
“But,” Cait continued with a lopsided smile and a conspiratorial look taking over her face, “I figured if it goes badly enough, my parents will take pity on me and not send me on another one… Is there any chance you wanna help?”
Vi’s face brightened immediately. “You want me to help mess up your date? Hell yeah!” She grinned, the mischievous sparkle back in her eyes.
Before Caitlyn could answer, Powder burst into the living room. She was holding a small, round metal object in her palms, which made a worrying ticking sound. What was even more concerning, though, was the black smoke billowing out of it. Just then, the fire alarm went off with a piercing beep that had Caitlyn plugging her ears.
Vi sprang out of her seat and pulled the window open, sending various knick-knacks clattering to the floor. Powder leaned out the window to look below, one of her long braids dragging behind her. Once the coast was clear, she threw the smoking device directly out of the window and onto the street beneath them.
With how often Cait was over, this was standard protocol to her by now. The first time she’d gone to visit Vi, she was greeted at the door by the blaring of the fire alarm and a most chaotic scene. Vi in all her disheveled glory had opened the door to let her in before all but sprinting back towards the kitchen, leaving Caitlyn standing at the door, flabbergasted.
A moment later Vi had shouted her name, asking her to open the window. As Caitlyn rushed towards it, pulled the heavy curtains aside and opened the window. Now that Caitlyn had a moment to take account of the situation she saw Powder was approaching the window holding something at arm's length using a pair of tongs. Cait didn't even have the time to figure out what it was before Powder had catapulted it out of the window. From then on Cait had just accepted and embraced the sheer mayhem she was confronted with whenever she visited.
Chaos reigned supreme with this family. While sometimes it could be overwhelming, it was almost always a welcome change from her own home life.
Caitlyn was pulled back into the moment by Vi’s alarmed shout, “What was that Powder?”
“Well it was supposed to count down the perfect amount of time for making popcorn. That’s an art form in itself!”
“So it wasn't even supposed to explode?!”
“For once, no!”
Caitlyn laughed with genuine glee and they swiftly moved on to other topics, the previous conversation forgotten for now.
***
Caitlyn made her way into the coffee shop. It was an upscale place with a cozy atmosphere. For anyone else, it would’ve been the perfect spot for a first date. The smell of espresso wafted through the air, and she spotted a killer assortment of sweet treats behind the glass case at the counter. She was getting distracted, though. She and Vi had formulated a plan of action that left her ready to take on this date.
Honestly she’d wanted to drive this guy away by dressing as un-appealing as she could. Her mother had swiftly put that plan to an end, all but ordering her to dress nicely. When Caitlyn had put up a fight her mother had gone so far as to pick out an outfit for her. She wore a chic dark purple corseted dress with a square neckline and a puffy white blouse layered underneath. The dress had a frilly white underskirt which peaked out from the hem. It swayed in the wind elegantly, and it did look good on her. An outfit like this was definitely wasted on a guy like Hugo.
As she slowly walked through the coffee shop, she glanced around trying to spot him. She found herself trying to remember what he looked like, as while he’d left a bad impression on her during their last meeting, she’d never really paid close attention to his looks. As she turned to check another part of the coffee shop a voice interrupted her thoughts.
“Caitlyn Kiramman?”
She looked over to where the voice had come from: A man sitting by himself in a booth. Cait’s eyes scanned him. His dark wavy hair was parted to the side and gelled in place. Her mother hadn't been lying, he had a handsome face, a sharp jawline and piercing green eyes that drew you in. Too bad she preferred blue. If he turned out to be a nice guy, defying her expectations, she’d make sure not to traumatize him by ruining the date. But no way would there be a second one, she had her eyes set on someone else.
“Hey,” she said finally. “Hugo, right?”
He nodded. “Take a seat.”
She smiled at him and sat down on the other side of the booth. The seats were comfortable and the place really did have a lovely ambiance. Caitlyn looked around, taking in the warm pendant lights and the gentle sounds of a piano which set the scene.
“Caitlyn,” Hugo started, “It’s good to finally meet you. I’m so pleased my parents have decided to match me with someone of equal standing.”
Caitlyn just barely suppressed a wince. Well that was a great start, she thought to herself, if he kept it up she was going to really pull out all the stops.
“It’s good to meet you, too. So…” she said, drawing out the word, “what do you do for fun?”
“I’m really into real estate investment right now, passive income you know.”
“Oh that sounds... Interesting.”
“Honestly it's the only way to go these days, especially if you want to have a lavish lifestyle, I buy a summer home, throw a couple parties, and sell it at a profit when demand goes up,” he paused for a second only to continue with a smirk, “It takes money to look this good”.
Caitlyn was unsure of how to reply to that, and their conversation lapsed into a brief uncomfortable silence. She glanced around, only to see a young woman walking up to their table holding a note. She couldn’t help but note how fast the waitress had come to their table. Then again, this was the kind of coffee shop that catered to people that did not want to stand in a line for more than 30 seconds.
“Hi! What can I get you?” The waitress smiled at them, her voice cheerful. Her ginger hair was tied up in a cute messy bun.
As Caitlyn opened her mouth to order her usual, she was interrupted.
“I’ll have a coffee black, and she’ll have a Latte,” Hugo answered, his voice brusque. “And a slice of your best cake with two forks.”
Caitlyn was left stunned for a moment. God she’d rather be on a date with anyone but this guy. They had literally just met, and he was already taking it upon himself to order for her? She didn't even like lattes. And he’d ordered a dessert for them to share…? It just rubbed her the wrong way. It seemed awfully presumptuous of him.
Caitlyn sent the waitress a pained look. “Actually, could I get some ginger lemon tea instead? Oh, and I saw you had some cupcakes out front! I’d love a raspberry one.”
Hugo frowned, obviously not particularly pleased at her changing her order.
The waitress gave them a warm smile. “Is that all?”
“Yes, thank you,” Caitlyn replied, returning the waitress’s smile.
“Make it fast,” Hugo chimed in. He wasn’t even making an effort to sound patient.
Was he honestly being rude to the waitress right now? From what Caitlyn had heard he seemed like the guy to care about the impressions he left on people. Clearly that only applied to people of his status or higher. At this rate she wouldn't even have to do anything to consider the date a disaster. That wouldn't stop her though, her and Vi’s plan was genius and she had to suppress a
mischievous smile at the thought of it.
A few minutes later the waitress returned with their drinks, before quickly bringing them their food as well. Caitlyn looked down at her raspberry cupcake in appreciation, it looked delectable.
After she’d gone, Caitlyn took a sip of her drink and hummed in pleasure. At least the tea was delicious. Hugo, looking somewhat disgruntled, used one of his two forks to sample the chocolate cake in front of him. Revelling in the moment of peace, Caitlyn lifted the cupcake to her mouth, taking a bite and savouring the flavour. That was the precise instant Hugo chose to open his mouth again, ruining the moment.
“I have to be honest here, I’m looking for a high value woman. You meet a lot of my requirements—”
Caitlyn caught a flash of movement in the corner of her eye. She was ecstatic when she got to cut him off the next second.
She tried to act shocked as best she could, hissing, “Hide! My girlfriend’s here!”
“What?” he spluttered, the look on his face offended and incredulous.
Cait couldn't give him a chance to recover. “Hurry, get under the table!” She gestured wildly to the floor and all but pushed him down. For some reason he went along with it, if only to avoid any further embarrassment.
Vi sauntered up to the table. She locked eyes with Caitlyn, then glanced down to the table where Hugo was hiding. Caitlyn couldn't help the smile overtaking her face, as their plan came to fruition.
“Hey babe,” Vi nodded. She looked so good in her red leather jacket. With her hair swept out of her face, Caitlyn could see the mischievous glint in her eyes. If there ever was a time to dwell on the sheer beauty of her best friend it probably was now. As a cherry on top, Vi shot her a killer smile.
Caitlyn damn near swooned.
“Oh, sweetheart!” Cait said. “What are you doing here?”
Vi shrugged. “I was just going to pick up some coffee on my lunch break, didn’t think I’d run into you here.” Vi reached forward and picked up Caitlyn's half eaten cupcake, lifting it to her lips to take a bite before continuing, “But it sure is a nice surprise. What brings you here?”
“Oh, you know. Just having some tea.” Cait tried to keep the smile out of her voice.
A sound came from under the table. Vi glanced down at it at just the right time to see Caitlyn gently nudge the guy under the table, resulting in a resounding oomph. That should about do it. No way in hell would he want anything to do with her in the future. Good.
“So, cupcake— you wanna get out of here?” Vi’s tone was so overtly flirtatious that Cait couldn’t help rolling her eyes.
Vi waggled her eyebrows as she held out her hand. Her sleeves were rolled up to her elbows, giving Caitlyn another glimpse of her tattoos. Cait gently took the hand offered to her, trying not to blush as she looked into Vi’s stunning blue eyes. Vi’s hand was warm and callused and fit into hers perfectly, she never wanted to let go. And for now that was okay, Vi was her girlfriend right now so she just smiled and got up from her seat.
“Why of course darling,” Cait said. “We should take advantage of the weather. After all, it's such a lovely day.”
Before they left, she dug through her purse and put some money down on the table. It wouldn't be fair to the waitress not to just because her date was a monumental ass. Vi’s hand in hers, they walked towards the exit of the coffee shop. She couldn’t recall the last time she’d had this much fun, it was exhilarating. This whole shitty date had been worth it just for this moment, she decided.
Her steps faltered for a second with the realization that none of this was real, that the moment they were out of sight Vi would no longer be her girlfriend. All of this affection, Vi’s flirtatious words, her gentle touches, they were all an act. Caitlyn didn't want the moment to end. A sad look flickered across her face as Vi squeezed her hand.
She let go of Vi’s hand after longer than was necessary as they headed to the door, leaving the poor guy her parents had set her up with, scrambling out from under the table, hair mussed and face overtaken with barely suppressed anger. Out of the corner of her eye she saw him sit back down in the booth, pretending nothing had happened, though he couldn't avoid the curious glances from a few other nearby patrons.
Vi slung her arm around Cait’s shoulder, grinning.
Then, before Caitlyn even realized what was happening, Vi leaned in. Warm lips gently brushed her cheek and Cait couldn't help the fiery blush that overtook her face. If Vi noticed, well she didn’t say anything and so Cait allowed herself to live in the moment, a moment she would surely relive over and over in her head.
