ooooh boy i can’t adequately express to you how wrong you are but I’m sure gonna try
getting beautifully beaten in the satellite race (remember october 1957 with sputnik 1? the americans werent expecting shit lmao yall got pretty scared)
Yeah, of course we got scared, putting a satellite into orbit means that your ballistic missiles can reach any point on the globe. There wasn’t even a satellite race at that point, and when we did finally launch a satellite it had actual useful scientific instruments on it, not just a radio beeper.
neil armstrong pissed himself on the moon
And? Where else were they gonna pee? You can’t exactly nip out to the back porch and piss into the cool night breeze when you’re in the Sea of Tranquility, you know. They had special suit catheters for this purpose, and had the soviets made it to the moon they would have had similar devices.
screwed up his “inspirational” quote
“ In central Ohio, where Armstrong was raised, speakers have a tendency to blend the two words together. And previous studies of Armstrong’s own speech “have established well that if the word ‘a’ was spoken, it was very short and was fully blended acoustically with the preceding word,” Dilley said in this story by Michigan State University Today. Coming out of Armstrong’s mouth, the phrase “for a” would have sounded like “frrr(uh),” according to the story. “
stole stuff from the NASA
You mean a bag of space trash and a camera? Stuff that would have burned up in Earth’s atmosphere along with the LM ascent module? Stuff that’s now invaluable to the Smithsonian?
only got in the NASA with the help of a friend who worked there, because he sent in his application late.
So what? He was a very good candidate, having flown the X-15 and several other dangerous test piloting missions years before. It can be argued that his pilot’s experience operating under high G-forces saved the Gemini 8 mission from ending in two deaths.
like there was 10 Apollo’s before it succeeded.
They weren’t all meant to go land on the moon. There weren’t even 10 manned Apollo missions before 11, they skipped #2 through #6. Every mission except Apollo 10 was unable to actually land on the moon, and 10 was ordered not to as it was a dress rehearsal for 11. Unlike some people, Americans test their spacecraft before sticking people in them.
also tell me, how did it feel for america to land on the moon while it was being orbited by luna 3, a soviet satellite?
I don’t know, how did it feel for that unmanned soviet satellite (actually a lander, Luna 15 - Luna 3 was an early 60s satellite) to smack into the moon just as the first American moon mission returned triumphantly to its command module? Luna 15 was the last dying gasp of the Soviet lunar sample return program, and it’s not fair to compare a failed lander to putting humans on another celestial body for the first time.
also to this day y'all still can’t prove the moon landing wasn’t faked lmao
Yes we can? What? It wasn’t even possible to fake it at the time, it’s just a persistent conspiracy theory that most Americans are ashamed of. I’m not gonna waste my time digging up sources if you don’t read this but hmu if you want some.
no offense but who cares about soviet N1 lmao
Plenty of people did. What makes the failure of the N1 so spectacular is the sheer amount of sloppy work it involved, only one out of every batch of engines was actually test-fired, the engines design was doomed because Glushko’s hypergolic design bureau had such massive influence so they used lots of little hypergolics instead of a few large gas-generator models, and it failed both times due to sloppy flight computer logic and debris left in turbopumps.
but hey it’s a race and they got to space first that’s. literally the definition of winning a race, getting first somewhere. it’s the space race, not the moon race
The goal of both agencies, after they both prove that they could put men into space, was to put a man on the moon before the other guy could. America did, Russia didn’t. It’s that simple.
(and as i said, luna 2 got on the moon in 1959. that’s a fact, no matter how slim you think the chances are) and the first pictures of the dark side of the moon were taken by a Soviet satellite too, luna 3. so america didn’t discover shit. so even then, i’d say USSR won the moon race too.
So? They hit the moon with a small ball before anyone else. They didn’t even soft-land, all that takes is big enough rockets and an orbit that intersects the Moon. That’s great that they took pictures of the dark side of the moon, too! Those pictures were of immense value to science. But you know what’s of even more value to science?
Going to the moon six times, getting parts of it that have stood undisturbed for uncountable millenia, and bringing them back to Earth.
America won the space race.
