so Dragon Shield is a brand of playing card sleeves you can buy at any hobby shop, right?  they are just plastic, you put your Magic: the Gathering cards in them, there’s nothing fancy about them

…but they have the most dope, cheesy, 90s-fantasy-novel-cover art on their boxes

behold, the box for the red card sleeves:

god, wouldn’t that look sick painted on the side of your minivan?

and if you turn over to the back side of the box, it gets better.  these card sleeves… have lore.

see, you are not just buying red card sleeves.  you are buying ruby sleeves, the emblem of Rubis the Accused, and supporting her in her ferocious battle against her arch-nemesis, Amina the Harbinger of Destiny.  you are buying into the Dragon Shield Extended Universe.  you… are part of an epic.

as far as i can tell, this is just two nerds in Denmark geeking out really hard all over their business.  there is not an ounce of cynicism or focus groups or actual market testing in this; they just like.  really fucking love dragons.  and gave them all names.  and slapped them on some boxes of card sleeves.  i love them.

i have never done Yuletide in my life, but if i ever do, i want to request some Dragon Shield Extended Universe fanfic.  i feel like it’d make those dudes in Denmark pretty happy.

Honestly, Rick Rolling is the best practical joke ever. Like, there’s nothing offensive or mean  spirited about it. It’s just like “Oops you thought there would be something else here but it’s ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’.” which isn’t even a bad song. It’s fairly enjoyable to listen to. There’s no jumpscares, no screaming, no ill will. Just Rick Astley telling you he’s never going to give you up. I think that’s great. “You fell into my trap! Here, listen to this completely benign song that will have no negative effect on you.”
