female characters are always lighter than male characters. strong characters are almost always dark. aggressive characters are almost always dark. peaceful and intelligent characters are almost always light. even amongst darker characters the lightest one is usually either the leader or the girls. dark is evil and light is good.

Daenerys Targaryen I feel is a heroine with incredible courage and I think that's what makes her so likeable. She has an incredible amount of belief in herself and her own morals, and weather's storm after storm.
At thirteen years old, she gets pimped out to some warlord by her brother, abused by her brother constantly, suffers the sights of violence and grief, loses her child and husband, leads a people through the desert, fights politicians and wizards for money and power, frees slaves en masse, conquers cities, and rides a dragon. And everything she does is not because she is just lucky or unlucky or even "badass" it is because she does not let her fear hold her back from perseverance. She's alive because she is courageous and not only for herself. She often speaks the voice of the lost and little because she intimately knows what it is like to be sold and abused. Her altruistic actions have serious consequences, but the narrative never punishes her with death. In a way, it's because she won't let the narrative kill her. Unlike noble Ned Stark, Daenerys has street smarts and sees the world without her as a loss. And she's right.
When Daenerys rides her dragon in the last book, nothing felt more satisfying or earned because she clawed her way up to that dais through loss, war, starvation, political disorder, and heartbreak. And then she clawed her way all back down to ride the dragon, and still fought for her right to ride him. It's a perfect microcosm of all she is. Technically, the throne is hers by rights as the dragon is, but Daenerys is wise enough and ballsy enough to know that she must earn the throne. She must choose her destiny and fight for it.
I cried when she rode her dragon. Because I feel like in a way, like Daenerys we all have dragons that call us to ride them. Leaps, risks, unconventional approaches that are part of who we are, and I think Daenerys inspires us to choose them, earn them, command them and fly away on them.

Daenerys not having a formal education or a perfect slate of mentors around her magically cropping up are both used against her but I think this makes her achievements more impressive. Having to figure things out on her own, make mistakes and learn from them, put her learning into immediate practice, go against the grain and learn from the flaws of the adult men around her, build up what she knows through direct experience, while always asking questions and seeking knowledge from a diverse array of voices, makes her only more authentically smart and genuinely clever. It also makes her achievements hers, rather than the fruits of some excellent advisor’s labor. In as much as she’s punished by the fandom for her own mistakes and even the actions of other men, no one can attribute her decisions and achievements to the better men. She is the better man juxtaposed against her selfish advisors, subverting the trope of “the bad king with good council.”

women are also feeling lonely and alienated from communities en masse women are also expected to stifle their mental health for the sake of perfomance at work, in relationships, for children ect women are also expected to work extremely hard to maintain a perfect body and perfect health and are punished for being fat/having hair loss/having health issues especially those that affect ones sex life women are also insecure women are also neglected by parents and teachers and authority figures women are also scrutinized for having emotions and punished for not meeting the gendered expectations of our class and expected to climb upwards and overcompensate while being punished for signs of poverty and we get the added bonus on top of, yknow, being women. your emotional issues are not a Crisis Attacking Manhood theyre the way our society is fucking built you just dont see women as people

like I know the first line of the OP is slightly tongue-in-cheek, but it's revealing about the culture when one needs to use a tongue-in-cheek disclaimer of "about to say something mean" to preface the simple statement that women's experiences are as complex as men's...
people get angry when anyone suggests in earnest that women are full human beings who are distinguished not by some innate and fundamental difference but by being structurally exploited.
the expectation of being soothing while asserting one's humanity (and the punishment for not hedging, downplaying, and being self-deprecating while doing so) is itself part of misogyny. women can't even say they have emotions without prefacing it by saying "I know I'm being mean to even suggest this, but..."

Excellent points but I wanted to add that I almost always see the phrase "female characters don't need to be..." used as shorthand for "female characters should NOT be..."
Maybe I just move in the wrong circles but I honestly can't think the last time I saw someone argue in favour of traditionally feminine female characters without arguing *against* less conventionally feminine ones. When you get to the subtext, it usually means "this kind of character is unnecessary and unwanted"
Because I like warrior woman archetypes: your Aryas, your Furiosas, your Mizus. But that doesn't mean I can't *also* appreciate their more ladylike counterparts like Sansa, or the Wives, or Akemi. It certainly doesn't mean that I want them to stop existing.
And if I'm watching a genre where conflict and plot often revolves around fights and battles and action, to be in the midst of that plot and be effective in reaching whatever goal is motivating the characters, like fantasy, space operas, action and adventure, then yeah, the female characters probably do need to make a contribution to the fight scenes, and therefore have something useful to offer in them, if they are going to be central to these stories, because the action and the fights are themselves central.
And if I'm watching one of the above genres, if I'm watching a fantasy epic with stirring battle sequences, or an adventure with high adrenaline fight scenes, then chances are those physical fights are a draw in themselves, and as a woman, yeah, I quite like seeing women involved in them.
And if I love a badass action women who performs heroic feats in battle, it's not because she's "acting like a man and is therefore better than women", it's because in doing so she proves that being strong, being brave, being physical, is not solely the domain of men, and that the constraints that others would put on me and other women because of gender, don't need to be abided by.
The reason why so many women are attracted to female characters who possess traditionally masculine traits, or who triumph in spheres seen as being the domain of men, isn't because "man is better than woman, therefore masculine woman is better than feminine woman", but because the existence of these women, their achievements and their actions, defy gender essentialism and show us that being born a woman does not mean we have to accept a pre-determined existence based on our gender.
