now that we are all forcibly assigned teen by discord age regression style and everyone has cancelled their nitro. everyone whose been using a solo discord server as your paste bin and project planning folder to hold stuff you can get from your phone and pc both its about time you start saving shit and hop on obsidian. with syncthing you can get it realtime synced between your mobile and pc and any devices for free too. don't pay for monthly fees.

no you dont. thats what using obsidian with syncthing is for. theres many other ways to set up free multi device syncing with obsidian. syncthing is just what i use

syncthing can be used for fucking anything, im serious if you have a home computer/laptop/steamdeck/phone any kind of multidevice infrastructure, fucking set up synththing, i use it to keep my emulator saves synced between my phone, steamdeck, and pc. when I add books to my calibre library they auto download to my ereader and tablet (You have to have android ones like onyxboox for this), my music collection can be accessed and edited from any of my devices anywhere using a simple home server and syncthing to keep the files up to date between my phone, laptop and server, I can add songs from my phone or computer and they'll auto fill the server. Syncthing can unironically replace so many payed services it's crazy, want to sync your writing without google drive or any paid service? just use libreoffice and syncthing, want to be able to keep drawing between your pc wacom and your tablet? pick a program that supports both and syncthing the project files, Want cloud saves between a steamdeck and pc for non steam games? you'll never guess what syncthing can do.

To be clear, because it took me like five reads to realize this: the above posters are not saying "syncing can replace so many paid services" or "syncing can real-time sync info between your devices".

They are saying SyncThing, an open souce piece of software, can replace a number of paid services.

Just in case someone was confused and thought "syncthing" was a typo or didn't even notice the 'th' like I did. XD

if this is a matter of not having another device with a disc drive (increasingly common these days), it might be more worthwhile to take the disc drive out of the xp laptop and use a sata-to-usb cable to plug it into another device.

So I went to a series of stores and had multiple "old man yelling at cloud" moments. The guy at one place straight up laughed in my face when I asked about phones with headphone jacks. At the last phone place I went, I was steeling myself to finally just bite the bullet and get myself a phone with no jack and a stupid fucking dongle so I could still use the AUX port in my car, but then they dropped the bomb that none of the phones available had the ability to swap out MicroSD cards for additional storage either.

Soooooooo fuck that, fuck all that nonsense. Fuck all of the phone creators for continually taking out the actual useful features of a phone so they can sell more garbage to us instead.

Anyway, instead I found a tech fix-it place that said they could order a new battery and just replace the one in my current phone for $90. The only reason I was feeling pressured to buy a new phone in the first place is because my current battery is rapidly tanking, so fuck it I guess no new phone just getting a new battery. I am kinda bummed because I was looking forward to finding something with a better camera (for taking OF sets) but fuck the phone industry I'll just buy a better camera if that truly becomes a problem.

idea: pokemon randomizer romhack that takes about an hour to complete with decently difficult challenge and allows access to different findable events, routes, and legendaries to complete the run.

and every day at a determined time the game changes its layout using the same seed for every single copy, so everyone gets to play the same randomized run during a day and talk about it together. the seed uses the current date so the romhack could work forever without manual updates.

and everyone could be like ooh i loved the pokemon random run seed today it was so fun! oh todays was sooo difficult. oh did you see mew was available in the run today? :o it would be sooo fun

plus there would be the ppl who get addicted to it and change their pc/3ds clocks to time travel to different runs once they complete them, and there would be the people who do the runs daily for the sense of community they provide. and the game would have plenty to offer for both kinds of players :)

I kinda want someone to explain to me what linux is exactly. And how its different/ better than windows. But i also dont. Because im scared of the kind of autism i could unleash upon me

the same way that windows and osx are different kinds of computer environments, Linux is a third one.

but Linux is also free, and anybody with the time, skills, and desire can make their own "flavor" of Linux. these flavors are called "distributions" ("distros" for short).

the nice thing about Linux being free and there being so many different distros is that there's no big corporation that can do stupid stuff like put ads in it, or start charging you a monthly fee to use the office programs, etc.

that's a really basic, non-special interest overview.

Realized I'm a dumbass and, instead of having a single HDD for data and one for backing up the other, I could've just made them into a RAID1 and accomplished the same result in a less janky fashion.

So, i set out to do that, but the only problem is that, if i had just chucked them both into a RAID as-is, I would've lost all the data that was on them.

The solution I wound up going with was to create an array with a single disc by running

sudo mdadm --verbose --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --force --raid-devices=1 /dev/sdc

where /dev/sdc is the backup disc. I then mounted the resulting array, copied all the data from the other disc, and then added that disc to the array, nuking the data on it (which i had just safely copied to the array) and allowing mdadm to rebuild the array by copying the data from the first disc of the array back onto this "new" disc (in essence restoring the data I'd just wiped).

the commands for that last bit were:

sudo mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --add /dev/sdb

sudo mdadm --grow -n2 /dev/md0

so it turns out tmsu automatically detects duplicate files, which is actually fantastic for my specific use-case of "dumping everything into a heap and labeling it"
