Fic Idea: the long-suffering barista who keeps witnessing Timothy Drake-Wayne being flirted with--with varying levels of aggression--by what can ONLY be one of the many Gotham rogue's thugs, one that's built like a brick shithouse, with dark hair and a shock of white that falls in his eyes, and always seems to show up with a book to read while he sips his tea.

They're mildly surprised when the CEO of WE seems to be into the rough talk and aggressive caretaking.

But, they suppose, Drake-Wayne is a Gothamite from two of the oldest families, and seems the practical sort. Maybe dating a goon is good for overall safety. Jay certainly seems pissed when Drake-Wayne is kidnapped, and leaves in the kind of quiet rage that scares the barista.

(Later they see Drake-Wayne was rescued by Red Hood and Nightwing, of all people)

They're happy for them, though. Jay makes Drake-Wayne smile more and sometimes swaps his coffee for tea and Drake-Wayne is always willing to listen to Jay talk about books and whatever job he's working on this week and on the anniversary of the first time Jay made an atrocious pass at Drake-Wayne, the barista gives them both an extra large cookie.

They hear Jay asking Drake-Wayne why and he blushes a little and waves it off. Maybe by this time next year, they'll exchange numbers or kiss or something. A beleaguered barista can only hope.

a lot of people assume psychosis hallucinations are super intense all-consuming horror movie shit like the memes about the hat man or always horrible debilitating things that make you dangerous to be around

but in my experience 95% of my hallucinations are getting spooked by very clearly hearing someone knocking on my door or calling my name from another room or hearing footsteps walking behind me which are "just" my brain recreating the horror of an abusive childhood

i *have* gotten the "bugs crawling all over me" hallucination once or twice though and yeah that one is exactly as terrible horrible as it sounds AUGH

media and pop culture hypes up psychosis a lot as The Worst That Can Happen out of sanism, so even when you try and filter that cultural bias out you still assume it's based on something

when, no, psychosis is actually very simple: it's just hyperactive pattern matching. it's your brain's signal-to-noise ratio being off balance, it's seeing images in random static. it's not always this special uniquely big thing, it's in fact quite mundane a lot of the time.

no one is immune to psychosis, it's not purely the realm of the insane. anyone is one bad night of sleep or one bad case of food poisoning or one bad fever away from being just like me on my worst days.

and this, indeed, is why solidarity with the insane is so important: you, yes you too, are just one bad day from joining us, and no perceptions of being a "temporarily embarrassed sane person" will save you from the oppression of the psychiatric institution.

Like just imagine it, a harmless-looking Chinese old lady suddenly appears in New York and whatever monitoring systems the world organisations have set up for detecting people with superpowers register her as an anomaly. But it can't quite tell what sort of anomaly she is, because at this point in the MCU world 616, they're used to time travel but haven't quite discovered the TVA and multiversal beings yet.

So they bring her in for questioning. She says she runs a coin operated laundromat, she talks about her husband, daughter and daughter's girlfriend, her estranged and recently reconnected father, etc. She moves like a civilian, acts and emotes like a civilian, has the build of a civilian and senses/reflexes of a civilian. Her confusion and fear seems genuine, she keeps wringing her hands nonstop being anxious about getting back to her family, and her self-soothing response to that is apparently cleaning, cutting fruit for the people stationed to monitor her, and making craft items with googly eyes on them. And breathing exercises. Because her doctor recommended them.

Dr Strange is not available for being called in to look at her yet, so she's still being held somewhere for further confirmation on his par, but as time goes on, everyone more or less ends up believing this is legit just a poor little old lady, at the wrong place at the wrong time. Maybe the machine that keeps tagging her as an anomaly is only reading the energy signature of her universe off of her? So they're all feeling kinda bad for her, reassuring her they'll help her get back soon.

Meanwhile Evelyn's genuinely freaking out about how to get back to Waymond and Joy, or at least tell them where she's gone so Waymond doesn't worry out of his mind and her daughter's abandonment issues don't get triggered hard again. They've come so far! They're even doing family therapy! They have family dinners regularly involving Becky, and it's not often bad or weird when her father's also there now! Joy's happier than she's seen in years!

She is NOT about to let this sudden random setback undo all the progress her little family has made.

And if somewhere along the way, she discovers she can still tap into all the powers of every Evelyn in her original universe cluster, and uses that to curbstomp the Kang sent to capture her (because their tech also registered the weird multiversal wrinkle that sent her here, so they are determined to question her or use her, see if there are even MORE multiverses out there with Kangs to control them) AND psychically banish the entire council through him (because her ability is different from theirs, she's literally able to access her other selves through her own body and no Kang has ever faced her before, so they don't know this), well. She's had scarier adventures than this trying to save her own daughter and her own multiverse.

Also, Bob Reynolds gets an awkward auntie mothering session from her some time before the big showdown happens. Evelyn can sense that his Bob/Sentry/Void situation is not dissimilar to Joy/Jobu, so advice is given, heart to hearts are had over comfort fruit platters, and Bob gets a ginormously stilted hug, hand pats and "I'm sure your mom would be proud of you" from her (she's been practicing showing affection more openly with Joy and Becky, and getting better at it!), that is simultaneously very ugly-cry inducing and healing for the poor guy.

(Something probably gets done about Loki in the Citadel too.)

Dick getting a job waiting tables at a club when a guy approaches him, says he looks like Nightwing and offers him a job. And Dick is curious as to what the job is so calls the number on the business card the guy gave him and makes a meeting. And Dick learns this guy runs a club staffed by superhero look alikes where the 'heroes' are forced to act like they have been enslaved and wear collars while waiting on the guests hand and foot. And some of the heroes are dancing on poles or in cages and some are taking clients up to back rooms to give them a bit of private fun. And Dick is so tempted but he tells himself no because he really shouldn’t be blurring the lines like this. But then he notices a lot of the patrons are criminals and they are openly discussing their plans because to them its just a club that really plays to their fantasies of getting to dominate and get revenge on various heroes. So Dick agrees and tells himself it is purely for intel gathering and making a little bit more money than he would make anywhere else.

And his Nightwing is a hit. He spends a lot of his time doing pole dances and lap dances and gets paid a fair wage even without the tips his clients give him.

Then his boss approaches him and says he knows Dick doesn’t sleep with clients but that a client has heard they've gotten a new Nightwing and he used to sleep with the last one so wants to know what the new one's price would be. And Dick decides to pick an insanely high number so its not a no but its also never going to happen. Only the next day the boss comes up to him and says that the client is happy to pay Dick’s $10,000 to see whether or not he is worth becoming a regular and Dick goes along with it, curious, only to be left waiting in the room, tied up as per the client's instructions, and Slade Wilson walks in.

Just trying to survive

I genuinely hate asking for help, and I know we're all suffering so much right now, things are so tough for everyone. But with the job market being so horrible, and bills piling up, I'm forced to reach out and ask for help. I am now behind on my rent, which is close to $1000, plus my phone bill and power bill is overdue. I have to pay my own insurance as I don't qualify for medicaid. My disabilities limit the jobs I can apply for, and they're really not calling back.

I promise, even if it's just what change you can toss my way, it helps. Don't hurt yourself to help me, please. But if you can spare some, I would greatly appreciate it.

What helped me write trauma better is remembering that the nervous system learns predictions. If danger used to come after quiet, calm can feel threatening. If kindness used to come with a price, kindness can feel suspicious. So healing is not just “they know they’re safe now.” Healing is the slow, annoying, deeply unfair process of teaching the body that the old prediction is not always the present truth.

Taking the chance to pimp out Bessel Van Der Kolk's "The Body Keeps the Score". It's a book about the body's relationship with trauma, and it changed the way I viewed my relationship with my body and trauma for the better.

That said, it IS a book that mentions clinical studies and brain anatomy, so if you struggle to read stuff like that in English, you might not want to get the book in English, but a translated edition instead.

There are also specific case studies of traumatised individuals, so while anonymity was preserved and care was taken to be respectful, details ARE provided about those traumatic experiences where necessary. There are no euphemisms, there is no going out of the way to whitewash the brutal reality of what these people went through just to make it palatable to the audience. So bear in mind that triggering subjects are an inescapable part of the reading experience for this book, and take precautions when doing so.

I'm also aware some of the concepts he talked about, like mirror neurons, are still up for debate in the field of psychiatry and psychology. I'm not recommending this book as a mental health practitioner, it is not a substitute for going to a doctor and I'm certainly not opening myself up for debate regarding those controversial concepts. This is more of a "I'm a sick person whose lived experiences with trauma started making more sense due to this book, giving myself more control and agency over my situation, so maybe it will help you, fellow traumatized individual, make more sense of the chaos of your PTSD/CPTSD too, while you continue your therapy, the medications that work for you, and self-care".

And also a "hey, possible resource for hardcore writers with no experience of trauma, who wanna go the extra mile for realism". But also attached with another reminder of "this is legit disturbing reading, so don't be stupid about it".

Having a traumatic childhood means you cannot talk even objectively about your basic foundational experiences without it being "venting", even if you're not actually venting. You just straight up have a huge chunk of your life you can't talk about, full stop, without it being trauma dumping.

And it not being socially acceptable to talk about your own childhood is super alienating. Sometimes people want to know why, and any answer you can give them is going to be off putting.

It's to the point I get irritated when something I said is framed as venting when I'm literally just talking about my life experiences, doing my best to keep emotion out of it.

when I was in high school, I overheard two older students talking about a friend of theirs.

One of them said something like, "it doesn't bother me that [Friend] was in residential mental health treatment, I just wish they wouldn't talk about it ALL the time".

The other replied, "Well, that was all of last year for them. So when they say 'when I was in treatment,' it's like when you say 'last year'."

I try to remember that any time someone says something that sounds Shocking to me. sometimes one person's scary special crisis is another person's last year.

If you want to be accepting of mental illness, you need to accept the fact that some people's everyday lives are going to be terrifying to you. That doesn't mean they don't get to talk about it. Stop forcing hurt, isolated people to become even MORE hurt and isolated because you can't fathom toughening up a bit.
