INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE 3.07: The Failures TVLTwT/IWTVTwT Version.
The Vampire Lestat is now streaming on AMC+ and Netflix! If you have the chance, please support the show by tuning in on the official platforms.
Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”
Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.
#'this is present in the text' is often a good first step #but those second and third ones (naming it; describing its function) are vital (via @elucubrare)
INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE (2022-) | S03E03 x S03E05
Me opening tumblr to discover children whining about 🧛 VAMPIRES 🧛 being bad ❌PEOPLE ❌
"armand was so ooc in ep7!!!" no that's armand with his curls shiny and his skin moisturized. that was armand who has been getting some GOOD dick from a guy who wears a size 10.5 shoe and does not question the boss. that's armand who got laid three times this week and has that "let's make today a great day" spring in his step. the armand you saw in s1/s2 was burned out and barely holding it together and (judging by that one perfunctory kiss Louis gave him which seemed to surprise him) had not even gotten his tonsils licked for a HOT MINUTE. look me in my eyeballs. getting his minion back can actually be so helpful for a devil's self-actualization journey.
#lestat finishing babystat's words (aka treating himself with the gentle care and kindness he always wished for but never received 🥹)
How it feels to genuinely enjoy both Loustat and Devil's Minion and not pit the two ships against each other
This is truly everything to me!! Also “the only type of love Armand knows is violent” really hurt me.
Eric really said "we're here, we're queer, give us our own show so we can finally bang uninterrupted."
(Also talking excitedly of Daniel's future and not giving any indication he's leaving the show so jot that down)
