#duet with @thevintagedogtrainer #trainingtools arent evil, ignorance is. #lima #balancedtrainer #prongcollar #dogtrainer #PupPeroniShuffle
Whaaaat!?!? An Ethologist science based LIMA trainer actually standing up for *proper* prong collar use!?!
Yes. I'm 99% R+, but have been properly educated (& maintain ongoing training & education) in operant conditioning, classical conditioning, counter conditioning, and other training & behavioral modification methods.
🐶YES I will only use a training tool that I have first tried on myself at MAXIMUM stimulation.
🐶YES I use LIMA methodology and will exhaust / incorporate all other methods of R+, replacement reinforcement, & other B-mod methods before introducing / increaseing tools.
🐶 YES I train so that the tools are not needed long term. It is all about teaching the dog how to be set up for communication success! Think scaffolding on a building / sculpture. Eventually you want to see the finished piece in all it's glory. FADING TOOLS IS IMPORTANT!
🐶 ANY Training tools (be it flat collar, harness, martingale, vibration, prong, verbal cue, sign language, body language, food, leash, etc) should be used to promote healthy communication - not punishment or feed frustration - to both ends of the leash!
🐶 NOT every training tool is for every dog. The tool is not magic and I get a disturbing number of behavioral cases from humans who thought they could just slap a prong on their dog and "fix them". THIS IS WHY TRAINING TOOLS GET A BAD RAP!! 1) The dog didnt need fixing, they needed clarity of communication. 2) Now the uneducated but well meaning human made the issue 1000x worse and my job 1000x more difficult vs if they just sought professional help with their dog from the start.
.
Personal snobbery:
💖@hermsprengerusa are the ONLY prong / necktech collars I'll use. Rounded tips. High quality strong metal that doesn't bend, warp, rust, or otherwise deteriorate into a DANGEROUS piece of trash. Dont cheap out on your gear. It isnt worth the risk.
*not sponsored but I should be*
💖A well fitting collar (regardless of type) and leather* leash makes a world of difference. Toss those retractable leashes and ill fitting collars in the rubbish where they belong!
* I prefer responsibly sourced leather b/c it is better on my hands, ages well & lasts FOREVER, doesn't give me rope burns, doesn't dry rot / deteriorate into micro plastics like vegan leather.

Well... shit.
so you’re working a twelve-hour shift and you’re adhd as fuck: some tips from someone who’s been there
OK! so I metabolize medications BIZARRELY fast (I take the extended release version of adderall, which allegedly is supposed to have a 12 hour window of effectiveness but in my case only remains effective for about 6 hours* - instant release is even worse, only effective for 3ish hours rather than the expected 6) AND work long shifts (currently 10 hours but have worked 12 in the past) and so I’ve picked up some tricks along the way!
Trick #1: Move the Midpoint
if you can commute safely without your meds, wait to take them until AFTER you’ve arrived at work. in office jobs*, there tends to be about an hour of wind-up time at the beginning of the day and an hour of wind-down at the end of the day; the longer the shifts, the more true this holds. (fun fact! apparently people get LESS done during a 12-hour shift than they do during an 8-hour shift. who’da thunk?) Take advantage of this! Get your coffee together and your shit set up before taking your meds. Depending on the length of your commute, you’ve just moved your entire efficacy window an hour or two later - the meds aren’t lasting any longer than they normally do, but you’re maximizing the period of effectiveness.
*in shiftwork, food service, retail, etc. unfortunately this is not really the case and you’re not going to be able to push it forward any further than that, realistically speaking.
Trick #2: Supplement With Other Stimulants
OK, this one’s pretty self-explanatory and likely something you’re already doing, but seriously. If you can tolerate caffeine, USE IT.** This is going to be most helpful at the end of the day when your meds are still in your system and affecting you but are no longer actually effective. It’s giving you a gestalt of milder stimulants that should, when combined, have the effect of a stronger stimulant.
I personally find energy drinks to be the most effective method, because they’ve got more stimulants in them than just caffeine, but ymmv on what your body will tolerate.
**If you already have a faster heartbeat than normal or any arrhythmias please do not do this or at least not without talking to your doctor first; this hasn’t ever been a problem for me but my brother had to go off of adderall because his resting heart rate increased to like, 90 beats per minute. if you have anxiety, this may make it noticeably worse; you may have trouble falling asleep; etc. etc. standard stimulant warnings
Trick #3: Talk to Your Doctor
Your mileage will vary here; take into account your doctor’s level of assholery about prescribing adhd meds in the first place and your insurance’s (assuming you have insurance) level of assholery about paying for adhd meds, but if you’re currently taking a short-acting/instant-release version of an adhd med, see if you can get a prescription for a longer-acting/extended-release version, for an additional dose of the short-acting, or for a supplemental med for at the end of the day. Be very clear about the fact that your workday is longer than the generally accepted theraputic interval for the med in question; start the conversation by describing the impact on your job performance and then continue describing the impact to your adls AFTER work. Make sure to KNOW the typical length of efficacy for the medication you’re taking and specifically cite it in addition to the more specific/qualitative description to how long it’s effective for you personally.
Trick #4: I Lied. That’s All I’ve Got, Sorry.
Good luck! ADHD is difficult to manage even with medication, but you’re trying and fuck anyone who says you’re not.
*nowadays I have an RX for the XR twice a day, but that still only gets me basically through the workday and not much further, and because I am at the non-existent mercy of the american health care system I sometimes make the choice to forego a second dose in case of fuck-ups preventing me from getting my refill on time)
Inspired @connorsquarter ‘s post
I feel like I’m playing the most suspenseful moment of a Bioshock game and this is the audio recording I’ve found in the bottom of a trash can
have i ever told y’all about the greatest moment of my academic career
i was a freshman in college and i had this history teacher who was ~edgy~ and his hotness level on ratemyprofessor was off the charts and he was the first teacher i ever heard use the word “fuck.” anyway he would do this thing every so often where we’d have a “quiz” and the first two questions were always really easy and the last one was hard - they were all similar questions, and the point was to show what you learn about history and what you don’t.
so one day he’s like okay kids time for a quiz and the first question was who killed abraham lincoln. the second question was who killed JFK. third question was who killed william mckinley.
we all take a few minutes and write down our answers, and then the teacher asks the questions again so we can shout out the answers. everybody answered the first two with really no problem.
now, keep in mind that this class was at 9 a.m. and i was exhausted All The Time during my freshman year of college so i sat in the back in my sweats and never said a word and the teacher definitely had no clue who i was.
so you can imagine his surprise when he asked the class who shot william mckinley and without missing a beat i said, “czolgosz,” pronounced correctly and everything.
my teacher froze and in a very stern voice asked, “what was that? what did someone just say?”
i repeated: czolgosz.
my teacher: “who said that?”
i raised my hand, and my super cool history teacher glared at me. he then asked me how the hell i knew the answer. he said that in the TWENTY YEARS he’d been teaching this stupid class, nobody, not A SINGLE PERSON, had ever known the answer to that question.
i then had to quietly explain to a room full of people that there’s a musical called assassins and there’s a song about czolgosz shooting william mckinley at the great pan american exposition in buffaloooooooo (in buffaloooooooo)
The arts are important.
I shocked a teacher once because I could recite the preamble to the US Constitution (got bonus points to), She asked why I’d taken it upon myself to memorize it. I had to explain it was in a School House Rock song….
I shocked church with my ‘math skills’ when they were asking how many seconds in a minute, minutes in an hour, hours in a day, days in a year, now how about minutes in a year - and I call out five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes without pausing to think, cos Rent
Once aced a religion class pop quiz that asked me to list all of Jacob’s sons since they’re the names of the 12 tribes of Israel. The one and only time I’ve been thankful for Andrew Lloyd Webber. I even got points for getting the birth order correct.
My little brother got extra points in a social studies class once for knowing “O Canada” in its entirely (we’re American and grew up in Maryland, for context) because my older sister went to undergrad in Maine and her acapella group learned the Canadian National Anthem could sing it whenever the hockey teams played Canadian teams.
Who says the arts don’t have real world benefits?
When i was in high school, my history teacher asked what historic technology caused the biggest alteration in military tactics. I answered stirrups, and explained that the ability to brace against the horse to use a weapon and the better maneuverability vs a chariot created the entire concept of cavalry, which led to modern tactics, etc. The teacher said I was the first student to ever give that answer and that I was basically correct, and then asked where I had found that out. I then had to explain I had read it in a Star Trek novel.
My APUS teacher in HS made a deal with all his students: if you get an A on the first test of the year, your lowest test for the year gets dropped. He said he almost never had students get A’s on the first test.
I was one of 3 kids in APUS my year to get an A on our first exam (all three were in my class because we were NERDS). When the test scores came in he called the tree of us up to his desk and said he’d never had THREE kids in the same class make A’s on the test and that either we were REALLY smart or REALLY good at cheating (we sat in 3 of the corners of the room so we weren’t copying off eachother or anything).
I don’t think I ever told him that I got an A on the first 2 tests because one of my favorite cartoons when I was a kid was Liberty’s Kids and I had the series on DVD and literally watched it to study for the test.
You know the thing about the songs part of this is that humans have been using poetry and songs to remember large numbers and historical facts since the dawn of time, and I honestly think it’s insane that we don’t value that as a culture anymore to the degree that teachers are surprised by it
From a 9th century Irish manuscript, the phrase ‘massive hangover’ (Latheirt) written in the ancient Irish text Ogham. The monk must have been having a very rough day…..

u can spend 2 years with someone who never really learned how to love u & meet someone & within 2 months give u all that u had ever wished for in a partner
no one:
chris evans on set:
I wish I felt half as much joy as this brings me right now all the damn time
My NT friend: doesn’t this silence bother u
Me, autistic: are u telling me u can’t hear this incredibly loud fridge
The lights have sound
Electronics have sound
Appliances have sound
If electricity runs through it, it has sound.
Rarely is there actual silence (and that does bother me due to lack of sensory input).
This is why the barn uses me when they think the horses are reacting to a noise they can’t hear. I’ll likely find it (it’s usually the heating or the electrical box in the indoor).
I also know when the electric fences are on.
For years I was convinced that I was either hallucinating or had hearing damage, because electronics always made this high-pitched whine that was closer to being felt than heard, and nobody else knew what I was talking about. Then I met other autistic people.
I wonder if it’s an adhd thing too.
I always just assumed it was something to do with my migraines making me really sensitive to sounds other people couldn’t hear, because I can definitely hear things other people can’t seem to. Like the fridge or the tv (remember the old box tube tvs? Those things were loud on standby.) Hell I can hear my phone when it’s plugged in but for some reason not when it’s on a wireless charger. My brother is the same way, but he also gets migraines so we never thought much of it.
Huh. Neat.
Definitely an ADHD thing too.
I often *NEED* to put on music or tv show of choice on because I can't stand the noisy background buzzing.
My doggo, Ezri, who rarely barks and mostly borks.
When I got her, she’d been abused and would cower and pee at almost everything, and had been mistreated when she’d barked, so she never would. One day months after I had her she got excited on a walk and borked at a bird, and then immediately cower-peed. I had to re-teach her to bark by gathering her whole human pack and having everyone bark and howl and feed her treats and pet her till she got excited enough to join in, and then got more treats. Took a while but I was able to teach her to bork on command (and she’s gotta be excited or she just stares at me like “Sorry, the bork system needs charging”) and she’ll do it happily when she’s excited to go for a walk or upon seeing a friend, and at birds. I love her croaky borking, especially when she started off terrified of making a joyful noise.
What kind of dog is Ezri? I love her!!
I… did not expect this post to blow up this much but I am delighted at all the tags and replies and Ezri has been told the internet thinks she’s a Very Good Dog. :D
She’s a German spitz - in the same family as keeshonds and pomeranians. She might be crossed with something else as her freckled coat, non-pointy nose, and personality are not standard for her breed (they’re usually a lot more high energy and excitable - she’s super laid back and chill). She’s a bit less fluffy than breed-standard too, mostly because she’s grown out from her spring/summer trim (not usually necessary/good for her type of coat but she gets terribly itchy otherwise). It also makes her look like a puppy of a large breed:
Ezri’s best friend is Murder Cat, who is a gentle friend to humans and Ezri, but does things to mice that would make Hannibal Lecter go “Isn’t that a bit much?”
I got Murder Cat as a kitten, and she used to try to nurse on everything when she was small. Eventually, she settled on her favourite thing to nurse on, Ezri, who has never had puppies and a little confused at first but eventually went with it. She grew out of it, but they have stayed snuggly buddies ever since.
New Years here is full of fireworks outside and Ezri gets Vry Scared. I usually set her up somewhere with a snuggly spot right by me, and Murder Cat comes and does this all night:
She goes everywhere with me in my bakfiets (cargo bike) and lets me warm my hands in her fur on cold days.
And her ears disappear if I say her name to get her attention.
ok so great thanks for coming to my TED talk about my dog, good night, drive safe
