i’m literally tearing up thinking about it. it was a random book that my grandma had in her apartment. i can’t articulate why it meant (and still means) so much to my brother and me except that it was her book. i framed the cover and pages of it for a christmas present for my brother years ago. we’re both total saps so needless to say, i won gift-giving for forever.

this is truly me. sitting around organizing my kindle files, downloading books that i know i’ll never read, highlighting quotes and taking an hour to save them to my goodreads bc i forgot to do it for like, 2 months. and yes, i know this can automatically be achieved with the magic of the internet but if you never turn on the internet on your kindle, you never lose your library books.

why i’m not a teen librarian: a composition

any teen librarians (or otherwise) seen teens (mostly boys) playing with these lately?

they’re little spinny things and i’ve had a bevy of 3d print submissions from boys aged 12-17 lately, all wanting this. in mentioning it to a coworker she said, “yes! i saw a boy playing with one of these at the junior high the other day and i couldn’t figure out what it was!”

there are two boys (brothers) in particular who i get submissions from nearly every other day for these. in order for me to print submissions for anyone under 18, i need parental approval (so the kid doesn’t rack up $50 worth of prints that their parents have no idea about). once i reach out for approval from parents i don’t follow up if they don’t get back to me bc i’ve got a million other things to do and if their kid really wants the item i figure they’ll wear down their parents til the parents get back to me. so apparently yesterday (on my day off) one of the brothers stopped in to say he should have three spinners in the queue: 1 orange and 2 white. in my records from him and his brother, i have three submissions that are not spinners, a blue spinner, and 3 black spinners. -_-

GET IT TOGETHER, TEENAGE BOYS.

two and a half months and 60 spinners later, i’m at work at 7:30 on a friday night, printing– what else?– SPINNERS, singing in my head “all i do is spin spin spin no matter what” and then i find this bitmoji. when will this fad go away?

chicagoland libraries like their scratch paper in quarter sheets (two cuts of one 8.5″ x 11″ sheet to make four 4.25″ x 5.5″ sheets). LA-area libraries like theirs in 3″ x 5″ sheets. that requires so much more effort. two cuts plus two extra cuts to get rid of excess paper. and it wastes paper bc the excess isn’t big enough. just why?

IT’S BACK

i realize i have few followers and even fewer followers that would have noted my absence from tumblr, but here i am, after well over a year away. in that year i have left chicago, moved to los angeles, been library job-less for a year, had ~12 interviews (SIX of which are for the jobs i ended up getting), and can now proudly (idk if proudly is the right word...maybe exasperatedly?) say i am the (full-time) adult/teen librarian at the LA county library’s lawndale library branch as well as a (part-time) on-call librarian at beverly hills public library. i ended up taking the bhpl position because i’ve been engaged for over a year now and i’m not trying to be engaged forever. i’ve been there for about 3 weeks and i really like it. this is my first week with lacl and i’ve been training at various libraries, getting overloaded and overwhelmed with information, and i’m still adjusting (but v excited!). the biggest change with the lacl position is that i’ll be working with teens, a new, exciting, and anxiety-inducing situation for me. i figure (and hope) that tumblr can help with that, so you’ll be seeing more of me heeeeere!
