CNN has done this whole investigative scoop on how elderly retirees have been priced out of retiring to Florida and all I can say is good. That is better for the environment. That is better for maintaining a support system. Stay where your loved ones are. I hate the idea that the cost of living is so high that you cannot even afford to move to a shitty fucking red state but old people need to stop moving to Florida. I’m more concerned about the people living in Florida than the retiree/snowbird population, stay in fucking Ohio instead of moving into a condo shoddily built over endangered wetlands. There are constant natural disasters and ongoing environmental concerns, I don’t care if you wanted to retire to the beach. This is something I am so passionate about as a southeasterner even if I am not from an ‘ideal’ retirement area, moving across the country at age 65 is a terrible idea logistically speaking, moving towards family is one thing but moving to a ‘scenic vacation’ area and pricing out all the locals and then needing a caretaker while your loved ones are states away is so baddddd.
our society is so badly structured where people who want to do things for society are instead shunted into the machine that produces endless money. like think about what jobs need to exist in a world without capitalism. we need to produce goods (agriculture, manufacturing, construction) we need to move goods and people (transportation, distribution) we need maintenance (sanitation, repair), we need education systems and information organization (the structure of which does not need to be anything similar to what we have today), we need medical and fire safety, and we need people to help organize and spread resources to ensure everyone has access and things are getting where they need to go. This is a list off the top of my head so obviously I am missing a lot of things, and also I did not include art because to me it is not a job even though it is necessary.
But think about what is well and truly NOT on this list as a basic function of a society's survival: selling shit. Think about how many people are employed Selling Shit, or making shit to be sold, or managing money after things have been sold. Think about the fact that these jobs exist only to make people money/ensure survival in our current system, and how many downstream effects that has. This is work simply for the sake of generating work for the sake of generating money, and it has ravaged our earth for resources, it has ravaged communities and countries, it still is a vast source of inequality and oppression. Because we Have to Work. And yes there is a lot that needs to be done as a society. but so much of it is also farcical.
in light of that recent post i reblogged, lets do a poll
if universal basic income were implemented tomorrow, i would...
immediately quit my job and never work again, because I don't want to
immediately quit my job and never work again for medical reasons
immediately quit my job and search for a different one
keep my current job, but search for a new one
keep my current job
stay unemployed because i want to
stay unemployed for medical reasons
be able to start working when i can't currently

The chicken chain was told to "cluck off" the last time it tried to move into the UK. This time, it hired bigger guns.
me: "have they tried not being fucking ignorant religious bigots?"
article: “I suspect that a bit of the steam has gone out of the LGBT thing,” Backman told the right-wing outlet, staying ahead of the issue. “There may be the odd protester, but if they have got armies of PR people laser-focused on that then I suspect it may be OK.”
me: no surprises there... fuck them
sandwich recipe
We go through a lot of pickles here and this recipe is a good way to use leftover brine.
The thing that pisses me off the most though is the fact I know so many LGBTQ+ individuals that still go there, and they are surprised when I actually don't. It's literally like that tweet.

In case anyone hasn't heard, the cyclospora outbreak affecting tons of people in the US right now is coming from Taylor Farms produce. Best to stay away from bagged lettuce and prepared salads completely right now, but especially the ones mentioned in the screenshot:
Taylor Farms Earthbound Farms Little Salad Bar (Aldi) Marketside (Walmart) Kroger House Brand Target private label greens Costco salads and greens etc Trader Joe's chopped salad kits and fresh produce Fast food: McDonalds, Taco Bell, (Yum! Brands), Chipotle, Subway, Pizza Hut, KFC, Olive Garden, Top Golf, Red Lobster, Burger King, etc.
This is not the first time I've heard about a Taylor Farms foodborne illness outbreak. I stopped eating their salads after reading a description of the conditions in their facilities. Doesn't sound like they've improved anything.
We need a fully funded and staffed FDA, and regulations with teeth - and that's exactly what we don't have under Trump. To make things worse, the CDC is no longer tracking these outbreaks. We're on our own.
& honestly there's no debate to be had the zendaya earrings are orders of magnitude worse than kim kardashian wearing that marilyn dress. yes that piece was a one of a kind unique textile made so specifically for marilyn monroe she had to be sewn into it. at the end of the day it was a ~70 year old usamerican cultural artefact being repurposed by an american for an american cultural event and everyone involved knows exactly where the dress came from + what happened to it + where it went afterwards. zendaya is wearing the looted (or forged) cultural heritage of a people her government is currently bombing & whose lives they have been deliberately making unliveable for decades to a movie premiere that has fuck all to do with iran. we don't know where those discs came from where they were found or by whom & we never will. AND the jeweller appears to have altered them substantially from their original condition. destroying a people's cultural heritage at the same time you destroy their country + their lives so you can look good on a red carpet One Time i want to fucking hurl
The earrings, worn by Zendaya at The Odyssey press tour, are believed to be 2,000-3,000 years old and come at a time when the US is bombing
An archaeologist quoted in the article says "the point of these earrings is not to showcase legitimate ancient artistry, it is to fetishize the past, to be a commodity, stolen from the elite, circulated illegally, and immorally…this is about class signalling."
please wear sunscreen!!! I've seen "fuck the beauty industrial complex" posts about complicated skincare regimens and am 100% with them except sometimes they mention sunscreen and no. no. absolutely not. sunscreen is a wonderful supportive friend who wants to keep you safe, and you should let her do it. throw out all your other cosmetics and skincare products if you want, but keep your sunscreen. and if you're not wearing sunscreen, start wearing it!!!! this is not about terror of aging, this is not about every tiny imperfection our fucked-up culture has made you feel insecure about, this is about protecting yourself from skin cancer. wear the damn sunscreen.
i've got the kind of eyebags that make people in movies say 'you look like hell, detective. go home.'
