are we really going to make this claim about chinese nationalism 🤔
Sorry, I’m still stuck on the assertion that China is a third-world country.
there’s enough going on here in the screenshot for three doctoral theses. at least
Okay so 1) Nationalism is inherently bad. The idea is the veneration of the State in an equivalency to religion. That basically means questioning the state =blasphemy. This is always bad 2) China is a 2nd world country. 1st 3rd world dichotomy is specifically about cold war alliances. China was Communist and allied directly with the USSR which makes them 2nd world. 3) China isn’t a developing nation. It’s fully industrialized and not at all comparable to Brazil. Those are like 2 entirely different situations going on there
I don’t think nationalism actually requires state-worship, or “Comrade State is always right”. It just means you’re prioritizing your nation. Many natonalists openly oppose the State when they think it’s being too globalist.
In modern discourse, “1st/3rd world” translates directly to “developed/developing”, regardless of the original meaning. And while the criteria for each is somewhat subjective, China is generally considered ‘developing’ by the “experts”.
The only thing they got right was “nationalism isn’t even necessarily right wing”.
Nationalism is inherently bad. The idea is the veneration of the State in an equivalency to religion.
That would be called statism, actually.
(@siryouarebeingmocked In what sense exactly is China considered a “developing” country, apart from the issues of human rights and liberties?)

Well, it voluntarily accepts the criteria.

Some argue that it’s both.
Nationalism can be as simple as believing you live in a good place, and that the policies enacted there benefit the citizens before other countries, since they are the ones the state is for. The fact that is seen as evil or extreme is ridiculous.
