spiderman brand new day and the importance of care. mj not loving peter due to not knowing him, but still caring about him enough to invite him up, to draw him, to send frank to watch him, to give him advice and be concerned. ned not remembering what spiderman means to him, but trying to find him anyway to thank him. frank worrying about this kid who is determined to save everybody he possibly could. peter caring about jean grey, taking a bullet for her despite almost all his interactions with her being antagonistic, because she exists, and she deserves so much better. jean crying over peter getting shot, because he was kind and promised to be there for her and made good on that promise immediately, even though she ended up there because of him. new york and their care for spidey.
peter parker and his care for everybody- his family, his friends, people he has never met, people who have continually tried to hurt him.

Saw Spiderman Brand New Day today and it was good! I cried about 2/3s of the movie which is fine. There were just some really good moments

First off first off
Spiderman finally felt like an underdog superhero in this one. Tom Holland did a great job, I'm really proud of his performance since it would've been easy and expected to do all the usual superhero tropey things. But he put his whole back into it, especially the heavy-hitting scenes. I believed the emotions he portrayed
He gets kicked around, is vulnerable, lost, scared, cries several times and is generally just a regular person having a terrible time. It was refreshing to see that full spectrum of emotion get explored by a male main character
Speaking of,
When Jean took MJ's body and let Peter think she remembered him - that was very good. Peter experiences so many huge emotions in that moment and we get to see all of them. Really let us believe along with Peter that MJ who still wears the broken necklace from Prague would remember him somewhere. It was set up for the expected "true love's kiss" but we were denied that and I think it worked really well
Peter also tells MJ later that when Jean was piloting her body, she kissed him and he kissed her back. He tells her, apologizes, explains the situation and is ready to take what she says without rebuff. It was a great moment of accountability that's almost never addressed and he does it so well even though she doesn't remember
MJ having a lot of complicated and mixed emotions about the memory-wiping spell was good. She doesn't remember him. Her life has never had him in it as far as she's concerned. Her finding his letter by accident was a good way for her to find out. That scene played out already with Jean and this avoids rehashing that. Watching Peter crumple under this new heartbreak was amazing. They both do such a good job conveying so many things between the lines of dialogue
She does believe him which is generous and she gives him an opportunity to get to know him better by asking him to say hello to Ned. MJ consistently prioritizes Ned - even over her current boyfriend which was an interesting way to convey the vacuum Peter left. In that scene, she's an observer and can get a better feel for what he's like as he interacts with Ned. It's low stakes and friendly, leaving the door open for more interactions in the future
She also drew his face after seeing it for about five minutes from memory which I thought was interesting. That's not easy to do and it's a fun hint that maybe somewhere there are fragments the spell missed
Ned remembering almost on his own was beautiful. Ned is Peter's best friend and had been for years. Much longer than MJ had been in his life and their relationship was deeper and richer because of that history (in my opinion). MJ was his romantic interest but they'd only known each other for a few years - like three iirc
The actress for Jean Grey, Sadie Sink, was really really good. She did a fantastic job in this role. I was impressed by the breadth of emotion she portrayed. The only other thing I'd ever seen her in before this was Stranger Things season 2 and that was a good long while ago. I liked her a lot and I hope she's given more good roles like this
I loved how Jean's mind possession jumping was portrayed. It was done in an easy to track but creative way and the various actors did a great job changing their eyes and sometimes nothing else to convey that Jean was piloting them
This also meant for people like me who aren't super familiar with the X Men that I didn't know who this was. The first third of the movie went by before we learn who Jean is and they kept her a mystery in a way that didn't feel contrived to me. I assumed that this would be a male villain and was delighted that it was a young woman instead who had all of New York reeling from her power
The relationship between Jean and her sister Sara so poignant and devastating. Their scene was only a few minutes long but those minutes counted. Sara kept Jean safe and out of the way for SO LONG. The park was empty when she finally came to. Sara was hit with a tranquilizer dart which we see Jean get hit with earlier in the movie and Jean was out in less than a minute. It seems like Sara fought to stay conscious long enough to keep Jean out of the way and out of danger
Their sister bond felt real and accurate. I have sisters and that's what it can be like. X Max being the last thing Sara saw before her death was a gut punch. It wasn't a MacGuffin. It was a simple, clear message hidden in plain sight, a final farewell to her sister and only family. Sara wanted Jean to know what happened to her
The devastation Jean feels when she puts the pieces together and realizes Sara was killed was amazing. I'm a tremendous fan of "woman's grief supercharges her power" trope and also "dozens of shards of glass telekinetically poised to kill" and this movie delivered both in a satisfying way. I love insanely powerful women characters
I also loved Peter allowing Jean into his head. She'd always forced her way through but he opened the door for her - almost literally since his headspace scene starts with Aunt May knocking on the door
She gets put into Peter's place in the scene and she knows what he said so she can play his part perfectly but the dialogue takes on a whole new meaning this time. Aunt May says what Jean needed to hear for years, maybe her entire life and gives her a hug. Jean never talks about a positive relationship other than her sister and we're never shown one up till Peter. And all the physical contact up to this point had been combat or Jean tricking Peter
Jean gets the hug from Aunt May in a consensual shared experience from someone fighting for her trust. Peter also being in the headspace and taking Aunt May's place sitting on the bed was a great visual. Peter trusting Jean who could kill him without even moving, sharing a precious memory that she's allowed to live for herself, then taking the place of the person he trusted as he faces her asking for hers just - ugh. Chef's kiss
I loved that Peter sensed Frank's shot and got to demonstrate to Jean that he was serious about being a person for her - up to the point of bleeding out on the floor
Then she takes control of his mind to breathe for him for hours. Oh my gosh. I wept
Frank's immediate horror and contrition was well done. I love the various facets he's allowed to have. He starts out the movie by saying "I'm going to kill that kid" only to do that exact thing by accident. Great use of setup and payoff
I loved when Frank said "she just left" after Jean releases Peter's mind once he was able to breathe for himself. It was a great touch since Frank knew Jean was keeping Peter alive
I also loved Frank's plan to preserve Peter's anonymity. Frank gave Peter a lot of crap about hiding his face but made sure his mask was on when he brought him to the hospital and also that Peter would be able to stay anonymous. The public got to know that Spiderman was ok and Peter got to see close up the love the city has for its hero (and Frank got his moment in the sun)
There were lots of other good things I liked, more Bruce Banner/Hulk, the cool police detective Jean DeWolff, Yelena and others

I loved that Jean Grey wore several plain, non-descript outfits that weren't sexualized, just normal clothes. Her hood was the main visual piece of her costume. Her body wasn't focused on at all. She was allowed to be sweaty and unkempt, her makeup was super minimal. The actress is 24 and we've seen hundreds of examples of others half her age being sexualized and ogled so this was a pleasant shift
Peter spent about three years alone doing vigilante work. The lone wolf aspect of heroes is a really old theme but I liked how they handled it, repeatedly sending the message of "this is unhealthy," and "you need community" and "don't go through life alone." I appreciated that take, really emphasizing the fact that until Peter allowed people back into his life and letting them make that choice for themselves, he wasn't able to adapt to his increase in spider hormones
Also Peter was working as a vigilante (for free?), didn't work another job, had a space to himself with no roommate, has a lot of really expensive equipment and materials he regularly uses and bought flowers every week for his aunt's gravesite. Money never comes up even once. How is he paying rent??
Spiderman also has a long history of doing a "battle in the center of the mind" with various villains. But this Spiderman is so much more mature and loving than the other ones we've seen on film that his battle in the center of the mind IS A HUG!!!
Also I love that he told Jean on the rooftop after she possessed MJ that what she did was unforgivable, and then forgives her effortlessly.

Hardly a day goes by without my getting an email from someone looking for a way to do good with technology. From computer science students thinking about post-grad careers to seasoned coders with decades of experience, there's an army of hackers looking for a way to turn their expertise into public goods.
There's a name for this movement: it's called "Public Interest Technology" and the people who work in it are called "public interest technologists." There've always been techies who understood the link between tech and public wellbeing and who committed themselves to working for the betterment of society, but their numbers swelled as Big Tech companies saturated their markets and switched from growing by making products people like, to locking in their users and then extracting more value from their technological prisoners:

For organizations like the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the growing cohort of hackers who wanted to hack for good was great news. But the motherlode of public interest technologist opportunities wasn't the nonprofit sector – it was the public sector. It started with the UK's Government Digital Service, a group of public-spirited hackers (many of them ex- of the BBC, where they'd been tempest-tossed by endless internal power-struggles over the role of the internet in public service media) who retooled many of the UK government's most important administrative front-ends. For several glorious years, Britons delighted to the daily marvel of having their routine interactions with their government transformed from clunky, broken web-pages to slick, superbly thought through online processes that had all the polish of Amazon or Google, but without any of the gamesmanship, manipulation or privacy invasions:
Despite many attempts at official sabotage by a string of increasingly shambolic UK governments, the GDS still exists, and it still does amazing work, even though it operates today with a fraction of the official support that it enjoyed at its inception. The last time I renewed my UK passport, I was gobsmacked by how easy and sensible the process was. Local authorities have gotten in on the act, too: I renewed my absentee voting registration with Hackney Council last week and it was as simple as scanning a QR code, affirming my details, and clicking "submit."
Around the world, a generation of public sector technologists duplicated and improved on the UK GDS's work. In Taiwan, a rogue public interest hacker named Audrey Tang led a group of digital guerrillas in creating shadow versions of every Taiwanese government website that scraped and remade the entire digital presence of the Taiwanese state to make public information and services accessible, legible and useful to its people. After the next election, Tang was named Taiwan's first ever Minister of Digital Affairs (today, she is a Taiwanese "Ambassador-At-Large"):

In the USA, Jen Pahlka went from running a ragtag "civic hacking" org called Code For America to helping to found the United States Digital Service under Obama, bringing some of that UK GDS spirit to America's dreadful online presence, which had been largely built and maintained by beltway bandits who'd billed handsomely and delivered some of the internet's greatest crimes against usability:
But the USDS's legacy is bitter. In 2025, USDS was effectively dismantled and replaced with DOGE, Elon Musk's handpicked team of tech-bro cultists who set out to dismantle as much of the US government as possible, deliberately sabotaging the usability of America's governmental systems to make it harder for the public to access the services they are entitled to and pay for with their taxes.
My own run-in with this was my attempt to get a certificate of citizenship for my daughter when she turned 18: all I could find was an online form that started by requiring me to list the dates and flight numbers for every trip I'd taken to the USA from the time I was born to the day I became a US citizen, a 50+ year period that started with a trip to visit my snowbird grandparents in Florida when I was six months old. The entire support and advice service for the US Customs and Immigration Service has been replaced with a DOGE chatbot that repeatedly emails and texts links to the form, no matter what question you ask, and no matter whether you call, email or use the website's chat interface:
Many of the DOGE kids were monsters. The most chilling DOGE story I've heard was the anonymous testimony of NIH officials who begged the DOGE children who were dismantling their work to spare some long-running cancer research projects whose great promise would be vaporized if they were interrupted. The DOGE kids laughed at these entreaties, saying that once Musk had perfected "General AI" we wouldn't need cancer research, because their tame AI god would cure cancer.
But not every DOGE operator was a digital arsonist. Take Dan Berulis, a DOGE staffer who came out of the private sector and later turned whistleblower over the group's activities, who now faces assassination attempts:
Berulis joined DOGE to improve America's digital infrastructure, not to dismantle it. When he talks about his motives, he sounds like an early GDS pioneer, one of Audrey Tang's direct-action government data scrapers, or one of the Code For America hackers who followed Pahlka to USDS:

But as Berulis demonstrates, there is a bipartisan group of skilled, ethical technologists who are desperate to do meaningful public interest work. Their numbers swell every day, as Big Tech continues to curdle – no longer merely sclerotic and enshittifying monopolies, now active participants in Trump's authoritarian dismantling of democracy itself:
Tech bosses' gleeful mass layoffs mean that tech workers can no longer count on good treatment and stable, high-earning careers; at the same time, tech bosses' betrayal of democracy makes the prospect of working for a tech company far more ethically dubious than mere ad-tech optimizations. The result is a bumper crop of geeks looking for ways to do good with their lives and skills – as all the emails in my inbox asking for advice about this attests.
Enter NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has made "public excellence" the cornerstone of his politics, hiring the most skilled workers he can find and then giving them all the authority and resources they need to fix 100,000 potholes, bring New York's worst landlords to justice, and deliver every day for all the people of New York:
Mamdani has just unveiled his Public Interest Technology (PIT) Crews: five "game changing" teams of public interest hackers who will remake NYC's digital services:
I'll go farther than that: the PIT Crews – and Mamdani's project as a whole – is delivering the entire failed promise of DOGE. Unlike Musk and Trump, Mamdani is actually rooting out fraud and waste. The reason Mamdani can do this – and the reason billionaires can't – is that the fraud and waste that undermines governments at all levels come from the super-rich, with their tax-dodging, their no-bid contracts, their addiction to public subsidies.
Musk owes his riches to federal bailouts and contracts: if he wants to "eliminate government fraud and waste" he should turn over his files to an IRS inspector (if he can find a survivor of the DOGE massacre) and surrender himself for a lengthy prison sentence. For Musk, "government fraud and waste" is a single mom on food stamps who misses a box on a 600-page form because she's exhausted from working three jobs to make rent – not a no-bid contractor trousering billions in public funds for projects that overcharge and underdeliver.
Mamdani's PIT Crews are "small groups of engineers and designers will strive to change the hidebound and confusing nature of current city services by using state-of-art skills to rapidly whip up specialized apps that solve real problems." Mamdani says that they'll "raise expectations on what government can deliver, because we really can deliver."
As Levy describes it, the big difference between the Obama-era USDS and 2026's PIT Crews is "a skeptical, almost adversarial, stance toward Big Tech." NYC's PIT Crews explicitly recruit top-tier hacker talent who want to "make software that doesn't serve advertisers, the military, or the pocketbooks of centibillionaires."
Their inaugural chief is Lisa Gelobter, a veteran of both tech firms and the USDS, who says that "Without technology, policy is just words written on a piece of paper." The first project on her roster is implementing "Click to Cancel," a policy inaugurated by Lina Khan, Biden's FTC Chief – and then dismantled by Trump. Under Click to Cancel, companies are required to create one-click workflows to cancel subscriptions and memberships, ending the pernicious, incredibly profitable practice of trapping people with impossible-to-halt recurring billings. Today, Khan is running Mamdani's Economic Development Board, and her Click to Cancel rule is back – for New Yorkers, at least:
NYC PIT Crew's new Click to Cancel site will be live when the policy takes effect on Oct 1. It's a whistleblower site that will make it easy to report merchants who make it hard to get shut of their online Roach Motels (users check in, but they don't check out). It's estimated the Click to Cancel rule will save New Yorkers $160m in the first year alone – but only if Mamdani can enforce it, which is why this website is so critical.
This focus on meat-and-potatoes service delivery was once dismissed as "sewer socialism," an unserious form of progressive politics with an undue focus on improving people's daily lives at the expense of high-flying political change. Today, Mamdani is at the vanguard of an army of proud sewer socialists, who say that once you deliver for people in their day-to-day existence, they will trust you and back you when you fight for deep, structural changes (and the corollary: if you can't deliver for people in their daily lives, why should they trust you when you claim that you'll make everything better?):
3,000 techies applied for 35 jobs with NYC's PIT Crews, and, as Levy writes, many of them are high-flying senior coders who are willing to take a massive pay-cut and forfeit their stock options to do something that's both technically excellent and meaningful to their users' lives.
It's a clear message to other leaders, at every level of government. Many of the most skilled, ambitious people in every field want to make the world a better place. Every city, county and state could use a squadron of PIT Crews, and there's an army of coders who would give anything for the chance to give everything to make a better world.
I think there's a great chance the existence of mirrors/reflective surfaces silently fucks Rocky up.

its also interesting how it's that freeze frame in the wish that flickers with horde prime bevause its possibly the most unrealistic part of the wish (to adora at this point imo) and its kinda why catras love confession is so poignant because catra literally does the most impossible part of the wish and its enough to bring adora back.
Since my beloved wife got a breast reduction we have a nightly ritual where I smear goop (anti-scar cream) on their incision lines. The first goop we had was from the surgeon's office and it was a silicone base that was pretty nice, but did have a tendency to build up a residue afterward. We asked the office about buying more and they pretty much said to get whatever as long as we were getting something on it. They also told us theirs was a "spendy" $50 which we didn't think was that bad.
So my wife bought a different product ($30) and we were both put out that it came in such a small tube for the price. We decided we'd use it up before going back and getting the first goop again, even if it was more expensive. We did like that the small tube didn't have any residue afterward, but for the price we paid it still seemed like a rip off.
We have been. So wrong.
The tube has appeared like it should be empty for weeks. Yet every night, we convene in the bathroom for nightly goop. I hold out my finger and my wife squeezes the tube. Every night, there is enough.
When we first thought it was almost done we bought another tube. Even if it didn't last as long we liked that there wasn't a residue with it. But now that the first one still isn't empty it's clearly very good bang for our buck, because it is frankly staggering both of us that we still keep getting more out of what appears to be an empty tube.
Early on I joked it was a Hanukkah miracle but at this point eight days was over last month and we're gonna have to make a new holiday to liken this phenomenon to because this is the energizer bunny of goop.
Every night now we wait with bated breath to see if this is finally the end of its supply. Every night, there is plenty. I told my wife it would be funny if I were secretly filling it a little bit to keep a long prank going but honestly the opening is so goddamn tiny that we couldn't possibly fill it on our own. We shall see when it's reign ends, but either way, we definitely got our money's worth.

The first time a man from the future showed up at Martha Kent’s house, Clark Kent was two years old.
According to his birth certificate, anyway. She just kind of accepted that the details were a little fudged. Relativity, and all.
Maybe the stranger would have succeeded in whatever it was he wanted to do, except that he really did just show up. Appeared, like a ghost made flesh, right in the backyard. Clark, thank goodness, was out in the fields with Jonathan. He couldn’t bear to be alone, that boy, and they could never bear to leave him.
Which left Martha free to shoot the ghostly intruder in the face.
Martha had not always considered herself a shoot first, ask questions later sort of a person. But that was before she found a baby in a spaceship where her corn was supposed to be.
They’d switch off, Jonathan and her, who got Clark and who got the shotgun. Martha got the shotgun more often than not. Guns made her husband uncomfortable. She was hardly a fan, but she’d always been a terrible pacifist. Too determined to defend herself.
The sight of all that blood and brain and bone was still nauseating. She compartmentalized, told herself it was no different from slaughtering a cow; didn’t think about riot gear or tear gas or the friends she’d lost or all the things she’d moved away from when her heart couldn’t take it any longer. This was different. This was her son.
She prodded the corpse with her foot. It remained a corpse. A real nasty looking corpse, all big and burly and holding a gun much too large. She didn’t like making assumptions based on appearances, but she didn’t imagine he’d been coming for anything nice. She bent down to search his pockets, found a metal wallet and flipped it open.

Martha had a long time to think as she dug a time traveler’s grave. There were a lot of reasons someone might travel back in time trying to kill her kid. The first was her instinct as a mother, which was: he was a fucking asshole. Who killed a kid? Fucking assholes, that was who.
Now, it was also possible that her sweet little boy grew up to be some kind of space Hitler. She didn’t think she’d raise that kind of a kid, but she didn’t suppose there was any parent who set out to raise a Hitler.
Still didn’t sit right with her. She didn’t much like the idea of killing baby Hitler, either.
I wanted to use what ‘reach’ I may have here to share the Carolina Wildlife Center’s urgent plea for donations. Our community has done so so much for places like Paleontological Research Institution, Buffalo Nations Grasslands Alliance, Amphibian Foundation and others. I know money is tight for everyone right now but these are the kinds of places getting gutted that need the community's support

Malagasy mythology makes mention of the vazimba, a “precursor” ethnic group that might or might not be distinct from Madagascar’s current population.
The point is, we do not know.
