Hate to nitpick on an otherwise good reblog, but purgatory is *not* where souls that did not die in a state of grace go. You have to die in a state of grace to get to purgatory. "All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their final salvation, but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven." As much as Anon’s phrasing irks me, Catholicism and Christianity are fundamentally different ideologies. It would benefit everyone if y’all just embraced that.

Hmm, let’s see. Catholicism and Protestantism:

-both view Jesus as the son of God, therefore being both God and man

-accept Him as the Messiah prophesied in the Old Testament

-accept His death on the cross as a sacrifice for all of humanity’s sins

-Believe that He will come again to usher in the Kingdom of Heaven

Yup. Seeing as both groups follow the same basic tenets of the faith, they are in fact both denominations of the same faith. Unless you can come up with a rejection of one of the most basic aspects of Christianity(like Mormonism’s belief in a second all-powerful entity as God’s wife) you can’t claim they’re separate faiths. Because they aren’t.

-Catholicism states that good deeds result in salvation, while the Bible states that salvation results in good deeds.

-Catholicism states that the establishment of the Church is the authority on the Bible, and all other studies outside the church are heresy. The Bible shows that only God holds true authority over the Bible, having actually authored it through those who were faithful to Him.

The Catholic Church has more in common with the Pharisees than with Christianity. I’d advise reading Matthew 23, it covers the subject quite nicely.

- Catholics openly profess to consuming the body and blood of Christ. We’d admit it if we worshipped Mary or the saints. Pray isn’t worship. The holy sacrifice of the Mass is worship. Honoring Mary and asking her and the Saints to pray for us, isn’t worship.

- Catholics believe in the equal nessesity of faith and works. We are fully saved through Christ’s sacrifice, but we have to cooperate with that grave and salvation to get to Heaven. It’s not a “one and done” deal by accepting Christ. We have to show through our actions that our faith is within us. Works is also a very broad term that can mean anything from charity, to prayer to sacraments (Catholics correct me if i’m wrong)
