My toxic trait is seeing literally any craft and thinking I could do that.
The thing about knitting is it’s much harder to fear the existential futility of all your actions while you’re doing it.
Like ok, sure, sometimes it’s hard to believe you’ve made any positive impact on the world. But it’s pretty easy to believe you’ve made a sock. Look at it. There it is. Put it on, now your foot’s warm.
Checkmate, nihilism.
This is a powerful positive message..
I’m literally reading a book right now (Burnout by Emily and Amelia Nagoski) that says this is scientifically sound.
There have been studies done on rats and dogs where they develop learned helplessness in the animals by giving them impossible tasks. Eventually the animals stop trying, even when the task stops being impossible. (I.e. put a rat in a maze with cheese it can’t get to until it develops learned helplessness, then put the cheese somewhere it can get to it and it won’t even try.) But once they show the animals they CAN do something - i.e. physically moving the rat to the cheese - the learned helplessness goes away.
No one can move you to your cheese for you, but the book says DOING something - which they define as “anything that isn’t nothing” can help. Make a food. Work in the garden. Clean a thing. Do a favor for a friend. Call your elected officials.
Knit a sock.
If you feel overwhelmed by existential despair, do something. It doesn’t have to be big. It just has to be anything that isn’t nothing.
This is really good advice for ADHD people because when executive dysfunction gets bad it’s easy to fall into this pattern of thinking. Do just one thing. It doesn’t have to be your homework, or a chore. It can be something small, it can be something you enjoy. But do just one thing to remind yourself that you can.
This is what “humans want to be productive” really means
We want to make things. We want to do something and at the end of the process see that something has changed. We want physical proof that we did something. We want to be able to point at something and say “I made this”. We want to be creators

Have you ever wondered about like cave paintings? Like, “What were they doing? These don’t… look very good,” -chuckles- In fact, almost every cave painting has Spaghetti Lines, which are webs of lines drawn over-top images, which you can see here.
-picture changes to a grayscale image of a deer standing in tall grass-
And here’s an example of natural Spaghetti Lines in nature, but we’ll get to that in a second.
-picture changes to a photo paleolithic drawing of a mammoth. Alongside the photo is a tracing of the drawing, to clarify the lines-
The second weird thing is like sometimes animals are given extra body parts, like here the mammoth has two trunks. And here, there’s a drawing of an antelope or a deer, it looks like, that seems to have two heads.
For a long time, people would assume like maybe the Spaghetti Lines were just some kind of paleolithic graffiti, and maybe the animals were these kind of religious creatures that they had mythologized. But then, in 1993, a German scholar went into this cave in southern France, and it changed everything.
Unlike the other caves he had been to, this one was very poorly funded, so it had no artificial lights, and he had to be guided in by a local farmer, with nothing but a flickering lantern to guide his way. Here is how he described the experience.
He said, “M. Lapeyre finished his story and wanted to move on. I encouraged him to remain and to slowly swing his lantern back and forth a few feet from the cave wall. As he moved the light, I saw the colors of the tectiform begin to shift. When the lamp arced to the left, the blacks faded, the browns became red and the red intensified. When the light moved to the right, the pattern reversed, creating a shifting color scheme. Moreover, the engraved lines under and around the tectiform became animated. Suddenly, the head of one creature stood out clearly. It lived for a second, then faded as another appeared. The spaghetti lines were no longer a confused two-dimensional pattern. Rather, they became a forest or a bramble patch that concealed and then revealed the animals within. By firelight, a secret of the cave painters was exposed. In the space of a few moments, I saw cuts and dissolves, change and movement. Form appeared and disappeared. Colors shifted and changed. In short, I was watching a movie.”
Understood this way, the antelope with two heads, under the dance of the firelight, is an antelope going from grazing to checking for predators. And the mammoth with two or three trunks becomes a mammoth in motion, swinging his trunk.
There’s something beautiful to me about knowing that hundreds of thousands of years ago, ancient humans descended into the depths to watch movies.

I heard about this recently and about lost my fucking mind. I am begging someone to actually film the effect so we can see it for ourselves!
@lucithefer
here is a video showing some examples of this
honest to god can't stop thinking about this song about jeff bezos by philip labes (link takes you to his spotify). it's such a good example of politically driven folk music.
Lyrics:
Jeff found a genie in a bottle Who said, "I can give you anything you ask" "You can have your wishes three And a million more for free It's unlimited, just set me to the task."
Well, Jeff thought a while, Said, "I want houses, "I want boats, I want fancy modern art, I want tickets to the Met, I want my own private jet, And a rocket into space just for a start."
Well, the genie waved her arms and made it happen His every wish bolted from the blue And folks all over town grew enamored, gathered 'round To admire the man whose wishes had come true
They said, "Let's hear it for the man who has everything! By good fortune he's been set so far apart." "Yeah, let's hear it for Jeff who has everything! 'Cause his wishes are only at the start."
Well, Jeff heard their shouts and he grew worried He said, "Everybody's getting in my way." The genie smiled as before, "You've got a million wishes more. You can even give a bunch of them away."
Well, Jeff got confused and sorta quiet 'Til he finally said, "I have just one wish more." "I am satisfied, so I wish that you would die So you cannot grant wishes anymore."
Well, the genie's eyes got big and sad and shiny 'Til she finally said, "Your wish is my command." And with an effervescent sigh, she disappeared before his eyes And no wishes were ever granted there again
So, let's hear it for the man who has everything! By good fortune he has set so far apart Yeah, let's hear it for Jeff, who's got everything! Every single fucking thing except a heart

Oh boy, oh boy, I wish I had an avenue for sharing this with my undergraduates. This is some GOOD information literacy shit.
do you think
i know all the beauty industry is evil ecc ecc but you know what feels particularly evil? the shame in having any visible facial hair if you’re a woman. like. literally all dark-haired women have visible facial hair but since all of them remove or lighten it and nobody talks about it i’m the freak if i don’t want to do that.
exercise is important and good for you but the way its discussed is so inextricably wrapped in like weight loss and it being a moral failing to be unathletic or whatever and that really sucks
like im someone who does more strenuous exercise (tho literally just like. walking a half hour every day is perfectly ideal) but i dont care if it affects my weight or not bc regardless i know im doing something healthy for my lifestyle. when i lose weight as a byproduct, fine, its not my goal. if i dont, fine, it doesnt matter to me bc my body is doing what it needs to do. i think thats a pretty healthy frame of mind for it. like it needs to be reframed as what it is- something good for your physical and mental health , not as a means to an end of getting skinny or as a punishment
also the way Exercise as a concept exists now is definitely like a result of capitalism lol like it being sort of a commodity instead of just an intrinsic part of life. the way it feels unnatural to many ppl now and has to be forced is bc our lives are structured in such a way as to make it unnatural- ie cities hostile to pedestrians/bikers, physically/mentally exhausting long shifts that make it unnappealing to find time in the day for healthier physical exertion, etc. plus exercise as a concept becoming an industry- its not smth you just do, its something youre expected to buy the ability to do. etc

"In 1886, the popularity of the drug got a further boost when John Pemberton included coca leaves as an ingredient in his new soft drink, Coca-Cola."
I ... I'm sorry, what did you just say about cocaine?!
Handy guys building stuff for their pets are so wholesome 😭
How to tell that it's getting bad again:
- I sleep to much or not at all -I eat too much or too little -I sound disinterested in everything -Be spaced out a lot - I will ramble a lot or not talk at all -I lose track of time - I make cynical comments, usually about myself -I push people away -I tend to rub my eyes and head a lot -I avoid eye contact -I am always shakey -I will avoid certain conversations
