SAM & DEAN | SUPERNATURAL S15E17 “UNITY”

When Sam asks ‘what about me’ it really shatters my heart in two. You can see for the first time in his life hes actually unsure, he doesn’t think hes Dean’s priority anymore for the first time since he was six months old. The question is sort of soft spoken, like he’s a child asking so so tentatively because hes so scared at the idea that Dean will say yes, that he would. The way his brows furrow ever so slightly, eyes wide as he looks at Dean with such fear that this is it, his big brother is done protecting him.

You can see in the first gif of Dean after Sam asks ‘what about me’ the way his expression sort of recoils. His eyebrows raise, and the anger melts away. His lips twitch, his expression goes from pissed to soft and devastated so fast when Sam asks him that. Dean looks like all the airs been knocked out of him at that question.

In the last gif of Dean it hurts me when he does that tiny head shake, clearly unable to form words as the guilt hits him like a freight train because how the hell did it get this bad? To the point where Sam would genuinely believe he would ever trade him?

His face is just so soft as he looks over at Sam, and he’s mentally beating himself up for ever letting Sam doubt his worth in his eyes. Dean often affirms over and over to Sam that he loves him and would do anything to keep him safe, and I think after the mess their relationship was in at this stage it’s what helps snap him back into it. Reminds him like a bucket of ice water being drenched over him that his main priority is and always has been protecting his baby brother.

i want to see sam post-cage barely remembering dean. it’s been hundreds of years, he spent thirty with his brother. he knows it’s dean, logically at least, but his birthday is just “maybe winter”, he has no clue what car dean drives except that he calls it “baby”, dean calls him bitch and waits for his response and he just frowns, thinking that seems kind of rude and dean almost cries instead of stumbling over an explanation, apology, something. it takes sam years to fully understand english again past the basics- he can talk to cas but even that’s a different dialect that’s developed since lucifer fell. he wakes up screaming in the oldest form of the language of heaven taught to him by the devil and dean holds him tight and tells him stories he barely understands of events he doesn’t remember and people he doesn’t know anymore and every once in a while he almost, almost misses the people who can understand him and he never forgives himself for it
