one aspect of the social media ban i think we really need to consider isn’t just that vulnerable people aren’t able to find positive connection online, it’s that e-safety likely isn’t going to be taught in schools because children aren’t supposed to be on social media, full stop. it’s like schools don’t teach people how to do drugs safely for example because it’s expected for people not to do them at all. and what this could mean is that even the people who could have been fine if told properly how to responsibly use the internet, that when they inevitably find a way to get around the ban, they’re at even more risk because they don’t know what to look out for.

Not to mention that the only thing kids can really do when they get into a tricky situation online is tell a trusted adult. That's what most of us were taught to do, anyway.

Ban kids from social media and oops, now that will require also confessing that you were doing something forbidden and possibly losing that freedom forever if the adults respond by putting you under even stricter surveillance.

One of the most common tactics predators use to manipulate children is making the abuse out to be a "little secret" they both vow to keep, which only works if the child knows that they will also be punished if their parents/guardians find out.

If I was conspiracy-minded I could easily convince myself that this was the intended purpose of these laws. But it can much easier be explained by adult chauvinism and people's (especially parents') desire to control, punish and oppress children rather than help them thrive and develop into well-adjusted adults.

I do tell a lot of people. My mom, for example. She’s a writer too and she knows that I enjoy writing dark stories. I said people were mad at me on the internet over a ship and she immediately guessed which (very problematic) ship it was and was shocked that people had told me to die over something so ridiculous. I recently told my therapist that I write and enjoy darkfic sometimes, specifically mentioning the sort of sexual content they involve. His first impulse was to worry that I might feel guilty about my harmless interest. I told my previous therapist that I get off to violent fictional media and she said it was fine because she knew I’d never hurt a fly in real life. I’ve told my coworkers about the sort of movies I like (horror) and they didn’t care at all. Turns out people who work at libraries know how fiction works. My childhood best friend has known I’m a sadist for as long as I can remember and it never seemed to bother her. I still have a reputation as a very polite and helpful person, and my friends feel comfortable telling me secrets and asking for advice.

You know what always shocks people? When I tell them about the hate I’ve recieved online for my ships. My mom regularly says she’s proud of me for standing up for myself and others online, and my therapist considers it a very positive act. I don’t tell EVERYONE I interact with about my problematic ships (hi I’d like a number 1 combo with cheese also I think Thor and Loki should kiss), but I don’t hide it at all. The worst I’ve ever gotten is people being mildly surprised that someone as silly and positive as me loves horror.

I feel like antis might not know what kind of things get written about in published books.

Like if you think ya mom hasn’t read books like flowers in the attic (probably still the English-speaking world’s most popular incest book) or the world according to Garp (in which a woman gets pregnant by raping a disabled man and later a different woman bites off a dude’s cock) or never watched a soap or a telenovela in her life and is going to be shocked by these things……….I mean even if you’re like “no my mom reads only respected works of literature and has never heard of television” or something have I got news for you about those as well the absolute most shocking sexual abuse stuff I have ever read was in poetry and I felt like my teeth had been punched down my throat, reading it, it was amazing, yes it was even more shocking than The Bluest Eye (go ask your lit-reading mom what that is, it is a very important book you should know about). Also I guarantee you even if your mom has literally only read the Bible in her entire life you know there’s incest-rape in that, right, it’s only in one of the most famous bits (it comes after the attempted gang rape of the angels, the dude offering his daughters up for gang rape instead, and then his wife getting turned into salt, so I guess him getting raped by his own daughters later gets left out of the tale a lot).

People understand about literature. They comprehend fiction. They can distinguish between fantasy and what people do in reality. They really do, and can, without too much trouble.

Imagine what the world would be like if everybody did this — if it was totally normal for my boss to walk up to me and tell me what fictional relationships she considered to be tolerable reading material in the interests of transparency. It's really sad to see people hide things that they once thought were worth showing to others.

Ever since COVID hit (at least this is how I experienced it) fandoms grew more unbearable to partake in.

People, who, more often than not, don't make art themselves and just engage with it (sometimes they don't even, no like nor comment from them) started making up reasons as to why certain kinds of thing to do on the internet are bad for you or for others etc.

But expressing scary or strange thoughs and opinions should not be punished. Thoughts like these should start conversations not smear campaigns. Humans have scary or strange thoughs. That's normal. And expressing them creatively shows others they are not alone in feeling a certain way and helping them feel connected and understood, helping them work through them.

And while I am all for proship and profic and anti censorship what I think is also really important to remember is being human and remembering that those on "the other side" are also human. Insecure, unhealthy, scared, hostile - but still human.

This is not just about being profiction or proship but, well, there's no label for people who think anti-harassment should be about things beyond fiction. Like— not all of the things I care about that are "controversial" are fictional.

It's important to be able to show sympathy towards those who did all the wrong things so they could learn how to do things the right way. This cannot happen if people are scared of being seen as monsters.

And so I want this post to encourage people to post about (the title says make art but it's not just that) things that they think others might find disturbing, strange, gross, mentally ill - whatever you've seen others say about similar things or projects. It might backfire but it also might do the thing that's supposed to happen - it might start a conversation.

Historically bad times always start with censorship (and self-censorship or censorship within the community) coming for human expression of the taboo and complex, morally grey thoughts, helping to set people against each other.

And it is important that fandoms have a place for people that have these thoughts because otherwise it's not going to end well.

Please make problematic art.

I reallyyyyyy think people are so dismissive of erotica and I get that a lot of it seems surface level, but I believe this is the problem. No one sees erotica as something worthy of exploring and theorizing about like every other genre. Our culture has a lot of sexual shame so it’s seen as degenerate (look at how people constantly make jokes at the expense of smut and treat it like something that should be kept under wraps).

Many people can’t experience their ideal sex life in person. Writing smut is a good outlet for that. It can be a profound healing experience. Especially for those of us with trauma. It can grant the autonomy you lacked in prior bad sexual situations. You can explore what you’re personally into in a safe environment without any pressure. It can be very helpful for self exploration.

Not to mention, you can explore themes in erotica just like any other genre.

Not everything sexual is deep, but it can be. And that’s the problem. Erotica is not valued so it’s never treated as such.

There's also this thing when people consider sexual things to be comforting and use them as a coping mechanism for stress or when they're upset or to motivate themselves etc or it's their way of communicating.

Like it's not even always related to anything explicitly sexual. It can be a metaphor or a medium for exploration of deep emotions or a form of art (as in nudity and even sexualized nudity but not (or not just) for the sake of making yourself feel good)

Also liking something just because of it being hot is "not a good enough of a reason" for some people. Which is strange to me... Like the story can be full of sexual scenes and it could be a good smutty story but also it can be full of sexual scenes and NOT be about the scenes themselves. I remember that one fanfic I read that was basically "let's write a list of kinks and try all of them" but the story turned out to be about building trust and relationships - the most interesting parts were not the sexual scenes but the interactions in-between where people who originally didn't care about each other all that much started caring about each other and noticing things about themselves and each other they didn't know we're there
