sorry i was so weird but you invoked a topic i am incapable of being normal about
Being an otherwise somewhat-functional autistic adult is HUMILIATING because. Yeah I can go out and work a real actual job with minimal difficulty most days. Yeah I can interact with other human beings and force myself to appear mostly normal. Yeah I can do adult responsibilities like grocery shopping and cleaning and cooking and laundry when necessary with little difficulty.
But. Every single night. I am faced with my greatest nemesis, the one thing I cannot bear to endure:
Taking A Shower.
friendly reminder that late diagnosed does not innately mean low support needs. plenty of us just didn’t get adequate medical care as children due to a myriad of reasons (eg. abuse/neglect, poverty, parental neglect, school system failure, lack of mental health resources, medical neglect due to misogyny or ableism, etc.) but again—late diagnosed does not innately or intrinsically equate to low support needs. many of us were seen, and hell—some of us were even identified by professionals as being “potentially autistic”, or “showing autistic traits” and yet either never diagnosed or our parents never told us.
autism awareness day so hello tumblr i am aware of you

i really wish autism acceptance included autistic people who have traits/symptoms that aren't palatable to the general public. like, yes, you accept the guy who really likes that one show and acts a little awkward sometimes but what about the person who can't understand social cues and asks intrusive questions bcuz they don't understand which things are okay or not okay to say? what about the girl who acts like a child and throws tantrums even though shes 32? what about the guy who brings a stuffed animal with him everywhere and genuinely believes it's a living creature? what about the person who acts "cringy" and "weird" all the time and runs around on all fours? what about the girl who gets really mad and says very mean things without meaning to when she's overstimulated? what about the guy who tells everyone he's the devil and genuinely believes it? what about the person who can't act presentable in public and makes weird jokes a bit too loud?
why do you only accept us when we're quiet and "normal"? if you only accept those of us who are palatable then you don't actually accept autistic people you just want people to think you're a good person.
