Why are colds like
One Nostril: I’m cool
Other Nostril: They have taken the bridge and the second hall. We have barred the gates but cannot hold them for long. The ground shakes, drums… drums in the deep. We cannot get out. A shadow lurks in the dark. We can not get out… they are coming.

Just a little PSA
Um…ok, I’m kinda nervous to post this, and I don’t want to step on toes.
Lately I’ve seen a big push about “horrible box stores” (admittedly not bookstore chains specifically but still) and supporting smaller stores and independents (and booklr seems to love the aesthetic of independent bookstores) - and while that’s great, I wanna say something about box bookstores (or well, bookstore) and independents in the US.
As of this writing (Jan 2017), Barnes & Noble is pretty much the biggest bookstore chain in the US, especially since Borders closed. Book-a-Million is also around still I think, but… It’s pretty much just Barnes & Noble.
Please shop at Barnes & Noble.
Support independent bookstores, of course! I’m not saying for one moment that you shouldn’t.
Do not buy books from Amazon if you can help it - especially not new.
I say this because…Barnes & Noble, for places like where I live, is the only bookstore around. Literally for miles. And I mean for the next 1-3 hours of travel. We have no independent bookstores. We have a few, but they close quickly because there just isn’t a sustainable market here for them.
I know if they close I could just order my books online, but…the atmosphere would be gone. The events. The book signings. In a sense, my home-away-from-home. Libraries are great, of course, but it’s not quite the same, and my library system tends to cater to either the young or the elderly, and not much in between - or so it feels.
Ok…not sure I really…worded things great, but I’m tired and - with the opening of Amazon’s physical bookstores - just a little worried about my store closing like: Waldensbooks, Borders, Books-a-Million, and the independent bookstore a few years ago.
So um….just some food for thought.
Also, y’all… just even go in. There are counters in the doorways that track store volume on any given day vs. sales. I guarantee you, if you’re going in there just to have a coffee or meet up with friends… you’re way more likely to buy something. Buy anything! Right now, their toy/kitsch sales are what are keeping the stores afloat. (Hence the HUGE toy and game sections now.) They need us! They need you! I know some of you struggle with the whole social anxiety thing but that’s OURS. And if you’re anything like me and can’t actually be in old libraries/used bookstores because ~allergies~, we NEED THESE SPACES to STAY AROUND.
Don’t let Amazon steal all our face to face encounters. Support book sales in Barnes & Noble! Support author signings in Barnes & Noble! This is a company that is PRIME for suggestions, right now. They are HUNGRY to know what you want. SUGGEST STUFF. TWEET AT THEM. TELL THEM WHO YOU WANT TO SEE. They’re floundering for ideas on how to bring more of us in! They’re listening. GO IN AND TELL ‘EM!
As a bookseller, I can confirm about the toy/kitsch sales - those adult coloring books were the big revenue for a good while, but that trend seems to be dying down a lot now.
Regarding social anxiety - it’s ok. If you want to be left alone, you should be able to just shake your head or say no if a bookseller asks if you need help. They are honestly not there to harass, only to help.
Speaking of face to face encounters: if you’re overwhelmed by the selection and don’t know where to start - ask a bookseller for a recommendation. Believe me, that’s my favorite part of any day, helping someone find a book they might like. And if other B&N stores are anything like me, the booksellers are a bunch of nerds with diverse interests. We all usually have some idea of what our coworkers like (or kind of unofficially “specialize” in - for me it’s dragon fiction and language books), so they still might be able to point you to another bookseller who can help you even better.
And yes, after firing Boire (the CEO we somehow got from Sears), we’re looking for new ways to clean up the mess and get people back into the store.
Another thing that helps out your store is: buy a membership if you can. Split the cost with a friend, even! It drops the price from $25/year to $12.50/year for the both of you. The 20% off coupons that members get always come in pairs. Plus, it gets you both a bunch of benefits! 10% off nearly everything in the store including the music and café (I believe I’ve only seen it not work on things like Rosetta Stone, and possibly one other product? And I’m a cashier, so I see a lot), monthly exclusive coupons, free express shipping from online (which is usually about $4). The 10% even stacks on top of sales, discounts, and coupons. All we need is the phone number (or email) attached to the card when you come to the counter.
If the membership is too pricey (and I understand it can be), you can ask to be put on the mailing list! We send out coupons through that as well (not as often or as good of coupons, but still useful).
Also, keep an eye on your store’s events, if you have a store. All stores should have their own website that has a calendar of events. Go to the events if you can! Booksellers work hard on them! My store constantly has some pretty awesome events - reading with dogs, trivia events, legos, etc.
Damn

Just One Of Those Days.
Being in a mid-2000s High School Health class and they show you this on DVD
Didn’t that turn out to be a load of bullshit that no-one can replicate the results of to this day?
Yep! His results were faked, and the entire film was basically anti-McDonald’s scaremongering, “poor people are stupid” and “fat people don’t get any sex”. It’s also thanks to this asshat that McDonald’s can’t advertise fuckin’ Happy Meals anymore and had to get rid of all their characters and their super size option, particularly because he claimed without evidence that they have a kid-fattening agenda, don’t list their nutritional info anywhere and have a mission statement from their CEO to make people sick and unhealthy from eating there for every single meal. On top of this, he actually tried to claim in a bonus experiment that McDonald’s fries aren’t actually fries because they don’t rot when left in an airtight container for a long time but all the burgers do–which is thanks to the oil and salt they’re loaded with, not some big conspiracy where the fries, which are processed and supplied by McCain in Canada, aren’t actually goddamn chopped potatoes–and equated the containers to a human stomach. Yes, cause the human stomach is an airtight container that food sits in for months, right? Spurlock, did veganism turn your brain completely off or something? Hell, the fucker even tried to claim credit for McDonald’s having salads, falsely stating at one point they didn’t have any before he “exposed” their EVIL PLANS.
Yeah, that’s another thing to remember, he’s apparently a vegan. He didn’t let anyone know he’s one, of course, he only mentioned his girlfriend is one, because it would’ve made his vomiting after a single McDonald’s meal, something literally no one else on the planet has done, seem less ZOMG SCARY.
Want a good film of this nature? Try Tom Naughton’s Fat Head instead, a film where a guy actively proves Spurlock wrong by actually losing weight while eating nothing but fast food for a month. He accomplishes this by NOT fucking gorging himself on the unhealthiest food choices, eating more meals than he claims or cutting out his usual physical activity. While he’s at it, he also exposes exactly why Spurlock is a total fraud. In the process, he gets actual doctors and nutrition experts to help him explain why everything you know about healthy eating is probably wrong or half-true, inform us about good and bad cholesterol, expose the real reasons behind the so-called “obesity epidemic” and point out why fat =/= unhealthy by default. Yeah, Naughton encourages viewers to try the paleo diet in the end, but at least it comes off more as a suggestion and doesn’t demonize anyone in the process.
Wow, everything I know is now a lie.
my highschool media teacher LOOOVED shit like this and loved to spurt out shit like “disney supports abusive relationships they’re brainwashing your children!!” and that mcdonalds was poisoning the world I wish I could shove this post in her face
1918 friends episode
Phoebe and Monica get arrested at a suffragette rally. Rachel goes on a date with H.P. Lovecraft and is not familiar with his work. Ross dies of influenza. Joey and Chandler make love in a World War I foxhole.
Ross dies of influenza
Why would Ross die of influenza? He’s the only one in the group who has any grasp of science and has a PhD. He’s incredibly smart and would be the last one to die because he would know how to take care of himself and actually have knowledge about diseases.
im screaming the plague isn’t gonna bypass you if you have a degree in paleontology
Why does Ross, the largest friend, not simply eat the other five?
I am so scared right now what the fuck does this terrifying comment have to do with anything else that’s been discussed on the post at all
