SCAM ALERT
There’s a new scam going around on Facebook using stolen images of Sobble plushes by plush artists and even prototype images of the new Toothless Hatchimal that hasn’t even been released!
Twitter Link
The scammer(s) which I’ll refer to as Uredaka for simplicity’s sake are creating multiple sponsored Facebook advertisements. These advertisements have been created from multiple pages and almost always link back to Uredaka.com or a similar clone site. I’ve seen these advertisements multiple times just scrolling through my feed. The Brilliant Things, Happy Springtime, and Our Collection are three Facebook pages all running ads using stolen images linking to Uredaka. But I suspect there are quite a few more pages.
If you notice, the pages have very odd themes. They appear to start as home decor pages, but then there’s the random sponsored post of Pokemon or HTTYD items, or other popular cartoons. It’s clear that they’re capitalizing the newest ‘Hot’ trend. Both Sobble and Toothless are pretty big right now with the reveal of the new Pokemon Sword/Shield games and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.
Don’t be fooled by the reviews! The artist pictured above is the creator of that Sobble plush!
This sponsored post got pretty big. And just reading through the comments, many people have purchased this toy. The above Toothless Hatchimal toy is officially licensed by Spin Master. It was revealed this year at New York’s Toy Fair at their booth. The toy is slated for a fall 2019 release so it isn’t even available yet!
I’ve reported the Facebook pages and commented to let people know of the scam, as other artists have too, but our comments are being deleted! Who knows how many of these scam pages will pop up.
This is just a handful of reviews found on TrustPilot.com. If anyone has ordered from these websites, you most likely won’t receive an item since they’re using fake tracking numbers. If you do receive something it will be a cheap knockoff.
Help spread the word about these scammers!
just so yall know
art block is your brain telling you to do studies.
draw a still life. practice some poses. sketch some naked people. do a color study. try out a different technique on a basic shape.
art block doesnt stop you from drawing, it stops you from making your drawings look the way you want them to. and thats because you need to push your skills to the next level so you can preform at that standard
think of it as level grinding for your next work.
As a scientific illustrator- this is 100% true and going to review your basics will fix it every goddamn time. Not only does it keep your skills sharp, when you’re not emotionally invested in the final product of a piece, you relax and your brain makes more/better art juice for you. So, when you get back to that big/important piece? You’ll know what to do and how to do it.
Nothing in nature blooms all year round. Rest, and take care of yourself.
This makes a helluva lotta sense. Noticed I always seem to have a better grasp on how I want to make the composition of a picture after doing some gesture practices, but never put two and two together.
I grew up hearing the phrase “you never stick with anything, what’s the point” a lot. I’ve always been attracted towards seemingly disconnected interests, and gone through phases of being really into something. But eventually my interest would fade and I would move onto something else.
Or at least that’s always how it’s been phrased for me, by others. Now I realize that my interest for the old thing didn’t fade so much as my interest for something new outshined it, and that’s vastly different.
I was always made to feel bad about it, with every abandoned endeavour I was told I needed to stop starting things if I wasn’t going to stick with them. I was told I was wasting time and money picking up these random interests and abandoning them after a year.
So eventually, I stopped picking things up. I told myself “what’s the point, I’m going to give up in a year anyway”. Even worse, I started dismissing every new interest, because I had no way of knowing if my interest was “real” enough or just another passing phase. I stopped trying new things, I stopped looking up stuff that piqued my curiosity, and having chronic depression made it really easy to leave everything on the dirty floor of neglected ideas. The more they piled up, the more depressing it was. All these things that could be nice, but I just can’t take care of them.
I realize now how bullshit that kind of thinking is. So what if I stopped doing karate after a year? That’s one more year of karate than most people I know. And in that year I learned discipline, I learned to listen to a teacher, something I had never done before in all my years of private education. I learned the true meaning of respect, that it’s something you do out of faith at first and maintain as it’s reciprocated, not something you do blindly and regardless of how you’re treated.
It gave me the foundation for the determination and grounding I needed to practice yoga. Another year. Not enough to be good at it maybe, but again a year more than most people I know and a year that is not lost, but gained. I learned balance, I learned to listen to my body, I learned how to let go of emotional tightness through physical stretching.
And then iaido, only a few weeks because I couldn’t afford to keep going. The year of yoga I had done a couple years previous had given me a better starting point than the other newcomers to the class. I already had balance, I had strength in my legs and I had better posture. In those months I learned the importance of precision, the true definition of efficacy, the zen state that is incessant repetition.
Did I practice long enough to get good at iaido, and yoga, and karate? No. Of course not. It takes years to become proficient and decades to master any of those things, but I learned other skills and those skills were an invaluable part of my growth both spiritually and emotionally. Likewise for my forays into painting, sewing, graphic design, film. I’m a photography student now heading into my second year of school, and every single second of practice I have in those other disciplines has given me more experience in those areas and made learning easier.
Skills carry over. They intersect and connect in ways that are sometimes unexpected. Nothing is ever lost, experience is never a waste of time or worthless or stupid. Allow your focus to wander, reflect on what you learn, and consider how you can keep using it in other aspects of your life. Stop telling people their interests aren’t worth their time.
‘A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one’
^^^^The real jack of all trades quote if anyone’s i interested.
For a week I was super into making LED arrays.
For a few months I was really into costume makeup.
For a year I was into sewing clothes
For a few months I was into sculpting and molding and casting
I’ve always had a sustained interest in animals, but the hyperfocus on birds in particular made me very familiar with feather formations.
Couple months I loved the idea of engineering moving sculptures.
Add all that together, and hot diggity shit, that’s some SOLID basework for making costumes, cosplay, and other impressive props.
—–
For a week I was into welding and took a welding class.
A year of interest in woodworking and fiddling with the tools means I’m fairly good at that as well.
Add that to the engineering from earlier and the focus on balance and stable structures means I can make my own furniture - Couches, shelves, desks, just give me the material and tools and I can make it happen.

Brief interest in business law meant two classes taken in college, and an accidental qualification for a business degree.
Those same classes let me point out some serious litigation bait in a friend’s startup company.
—-
A wide array of interests means I also have a TON of little nitpicky facts about how the world works, which translates into amazing immersive writing.
I know how it feels to use a chisel, and the delicate precision of electronics. I know the smell of forests and barns and old yarn being put to use again. The bloody smell of a freshly slaughtered chicken, and the anticipatory fear moments before skydiving.
The pattern of a bad weld and a good one, and the careful calculation of load bearing walls when building underground. Anyway, this world is HUGE and really cool. Why on earth would I want to stick to learning ONE thing, when there’s HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of things I could learn?
For anybody still struggling with this, I highly recommend this book:

IS ALL OF THAT PURRING COMING FROM THAT TINY THING
OH MY GOODNESS IT’S SO VOCAL IT’S ADORABLE!!!
yo guys all siamese are like this. very loud/vocal/talkative, and very, very needy/affectionate
@caliginous-is-confused
one of my favorite lotr facts is that gondorians speak sindarin as a first language and yet when faramir was talking to frodo and sam about cirith ungol he was like “we don’t know what’s in there.” like faramir. cirith ungol is sindarin for “pass of the spider.” do the math
some of my favorite tags on this post
Don’t forget that Frodo also speaks Sindarin, which makes this even worse.
Faramir: Hey, don’t go up the Spider Stairs.
Frodo: Why? What’s up the Spider Stairs?
Faramir: We don’t know, Frodo. We just don’t know.
to be fair, you’d assume the name means “there’s a lot of spiders here,” not, “there is one spider the size of a draft horse here.” so you go up expecting to have to shoo a lot of skeeter eaters out of your tent, and instead you have to figure out how to rope and shoe godzillarantula.
Hmmm…
They do live in a world where godzillarantulas feature prominently in mythology and history (Ungoliant plunged the world into darkness, scared the crap out of Sauron’s old boss, etc) and existed within the last century in Mirkwood. Assuming they ever talk to anyone who’s been to Mirkwood. They… probably know they were giant spiders in Mirkwood pretty recently? It’s hard to figure out how much anyone in Middle-earth has been talking to anyone else when we didn’t actually see it.
On the other hand – what if it’s the giant evil spiders’ prominence in history/mythology that’s causing trouble? What if lots of evil/nasty things/places get called “spider” just to indicate how nasty and evil they are, rather than any association with literal spiders, and it’s just… overloaded? Maybe the bad part of town in Minas Tirith is the Spider District. Maybe every tavern trying to be edgy calls itself the Spiderweb.
Actually spider/Ungoliant references could be really appealing to Gondorians trying to be edgy. They’re dark and evil! Plunged the world into darkness! But they AREN’T involved in the war they’re actually fighting, they aren’t directly associated with Sauron at all, so getting too interested in them would be creepy without being potentially treasonous. Because no one’s ACTUALLY going to worship those dangerous but not epic spiders up in Mirkwood, and no one’s heard anything from any proper spawn of Ungoliant in ages and ages.
In fact, spider/Ungoliant references might be appealing to ORCS trying to express that something is nasty and creepy! Nobody likes Ungoliant.
Maybe Faramir’s been to fourteen different Spider Caves across Ithilien, and half of them he didn’t even see regular spiders in, they’re just dark and damp and may have had orcs at some point, or something, and at some point in history someone got spooked. So you know, it’s POSSIBLE Spider Pass has something to do with spiders? But really it just means people don’t like it.
(The problem with this theory is we never actually SAW anyone overusing spider references. But it’s plausible they would!)
“The average spider on Middle Earth is the size of a dinner plate” is a statistical error. The average spider on Middle Earth is smaller than a coin. Cirith Ungol (lit: Spiders Gorge), which contains a spider larger than a horse, is an outlier adn should not have been counted.
OH MY GOD
I was waiting for the Spiders George reference
“I wonder why it’s called ‘’The Spider’s Pass’‘. I expected it to be more octagonal. Like a spider. Oh, well, I guess they misnamed it.”
im going to give them the benefit of the doubt that they thought ‘the spiders stair’ meant ‘its a bitch to climb if you arent a goat’ and not ‘warning- ungoliants‘ their whole world is full of issues like this- every third place has a spooky ass name that you arent sure if its a euphemism, accurate, or was accurate 3000 years ago. nobody realizes ‘fangorn forest’ means ‘theres a tree named fangorn who lives here, its his forest, he likes poetry’, nobody realizes ‘the barrow downs’ should be warning you that anything is particular noteworthy about the barrows it just says they exist, im not even sure the ‘blue mountains’ are even blue

Y’all laugh but I actually end up doing pretty well once I go to work
fuck it, lets luck this shit up.
i hope y'all know that pushing for mandatory vaccination before travel is guaranteed to harm people from global south the most because 1) western nations don’t consider our medical systems on par with theirs, and 2) many people don’t have accurate/complete immunization records for a number of reasons including things like fleeing their homes due to domestic violence, persecution etc
and before you say that we should have exceptions for those situations, think about how complicated immigration systems already are and if you want to add even more bureaucratic hurdles to it? how are we going to ensure that this applies only to rich white tourists and not all people? how do we make sure governments don’t use this as an excuse to turn people away at the border?? AND as sympathetic as i am when places like costa rica have to deal with the effects of ignorant anti-vax white folks, there is absolutely no way policies like these aren’t going to backfire, against poor non-white people
the solution here is obviously to increase funding for science research and education, and to aggressively combat anti-vax propaganda. and, ya know, fuck capitalism colonialism imperialism and all that
anyway like insha said, us in the global south already have to go through extensive and humiliating processes of getting a million different vaccines before many countries will allow us to enter. i remember applying for a student visa to US and having to find just the kind of hospital/doctor they would approve of to ensure i had everything in order….even though anti-vax is not A Thing in india and most kids here are properly immunized
so if you’re calling for mandatory checks then it’s just gonna make life harder for us and white people will sail through as always 🤷🏽♀️😔

Hey Polar, I have an art-related question if you don't mind? On your Roxas picture, between the highlight on his arm and the shading on the other side there's a reddish stripe to separate the two. (I hope a described that well) I was wondering-- how exactly do you start to find the right color for that? Is it based more on lighting? Skintone? I've seen it used by a few artists and I'm trying to figure it out but cannot find references. Thank you!
That’s a core shadow~ In theory it should be the darkest part of the shadow, it’s the edge where the form is no longer touching direct light, so it’s placement can really add volume. Why is the core shadow the darkest point? Bc of reflect light, colors are effected by other colors/light around them.So past the core shadow (to the dark side) things are picking up reflect light/colors because there is such a bright light source. This short vid I found below is a good visual rep of how a shadow can change drastically based on what it’s reflecting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9dPvi0JVasThe red color between the core shadow going to the light side is apparently called the “terminator” I’ve never heard a name for it, but I’m assuming it’s a transition color to show a smoother roundness? (lmk if i’m wrong) In my case I made my terminator very saturated/warm to match with my warm lighting.
(In most cased the reflect light would be a cooler color, but I wanted this painting to be very warm)When you squint the shadow should still look like the darkest area, don’t go too ham on the lightness of the reflect light or it’ll look like a second light source instead of a subtle reflection. However you can amp up the lightness of your reflect light on anything you want to look glossy or wet since those things are much more reflective than dry skin/clothes.
