So, mini-backstory. I was watching RSSLiam’s KH2 Proud Mode playthrough live and he was in A Nightmare Before Christmas World. A joke was made about Santa becoming a Nobody and chat tossed out a bunch of X+Santa names. One thing led to another... Meet Xantas, the hidden Organization XIII member with his dual candy caneswords, complete with reindeer horned handles and icicle-picks. god i can’t believe how dumb this is

This tuesday especially, being my birthday today! (I don’t have the energy for an art post!)

A long time ago an anon asked my thoughts about drawing backgrounds, so I finally got around to putting this together. It’s more prop-centric, but it still represents my philosophy to backgrounds. 

I’ll try to do something more about drawing actual background spaces in the future! Please let me know what you think, if anything is unclear, or if you have suggestions for other tutorials you might find helpful!

art block is your brain telling you to do studies.

draw a still life. practice some poses. sketch some naked people. do a color study. try out a different technique on a basic shape.

art block doesnt stop you from drawing, it stops you from making your drawings look the way you want them to. and thats because you need to push your skills to the next level so you can preform at that standard

think of it as level grinding for your next work.

As a scientific illustrator- this is 100% true and going to review your basics will fix it every goddamn time.  Not only does it keep your skills sharp, when you’re not emotionally invested in the final product of a piece, you relax and your brain makes more/better art juice for you.  So, when you get back to that big/important piece?  You’ll know what to do and how to do it.

Nothing in nature blooms all year round.  Rest, and take care of yourself.

This makes a helluva lotta sense. Noticed I always seem to have a better grasp on how I want to make the composition of a picture after doing some gesture practices, but never put two and two together.

Yikes D8. That’s why it’s so important to do stretches and draw with your whole arm (ok, arguably hard with a tablet versus a big gorgeous easel) and etc but I forgot today bc I am a moron and it was great
