So if humanity someday colonized other planets, it is unlikely they will have day periods that divide nicely into our earth based 60 second minutes and 60 minute hours, and 24 hour days.
So how should we decide to mark the time?
Should we change the definition of a second to scale for the new planet? This runs into problems if you want to maintain contact with earth and exchange information and science. But not impossible. The world still accommodates the USA and their beloved imperial system (I say as a Canadian with a Frankenstein mix of imperial and metric)
Should we keep the same second but change the definition of a minute or hour to divide better into the day? So a minute could have 84 seconds and the hour 90 minutes so the day ends up having a nice even number of hours in the day.
Or perhaps we keep the second, minute, and hour increments. But each day just has one “hour” that makes up the remaining time. So for mars. You have 24 normal hours and one remainder hour that is only 39 minutes and 35 seconds.
