Mooooooood
Someone in a weaving discord I'm in saw this much-jpg'd image on Facebook. They enjoyed it and crossposted it. I enjoyed it and asked if there was a source. Alas, unattributed. We would never know.
Not so! By their magical librarianship and citation-hunting powers, @ginneke tracked the image first to Pinterest, then a long-defunct blog, then a connection with the 1960s fairytale retellings of Amadel Williams-Ellis illustrated by one William Stobbs. He had the correct whimsical art style - a hit! Another server member suggested a likely candidate tale of Baba Yaga involving a cat and a loom.
Unfortunately, these books have never been digitised, not even the tables of contents, so there was no way to know whether they might be correct. And my various libraries had never heard of the books. However, for about ÂŁ7 each on ebay they were within my shenanigans budget - I was invested now.
I ordered two, mostly at random. Leafed all the way through both of them, got nearly to the end with some delightful other creatures but not yet the Loom Cat...
..... and then all of a sudden there it was! In a Baba Yaga story in Round a the World Fairy Tales exactly as predicted! Success in tracking down an 80-year-old untitled children's book illustration via several people and much joy. I'm very satisfied and will put the full Baba Yaga tale in a reblog.
I can't do such an awful affair...
hey it's probably a really good idea to download a copy of your Master Promissory Note since most of them stipulate that your loans are *specifically owed to the Department of Education* and if you intend to dispute the debt in the wake of the DoE dissolving that will be really good to have
log in and then go to My Documents and download a copy of it. i'm serious. if trump dissolves the DoE entirely it may make the debt uncollectable depending on exactly how they do it, and he's too stupid to listen to lawyers that tell him when he's breaking the law. worst case you have an extra PDF on your computer. best case your student loans go away because you signed a contract to pay DoE and no one else. go download a copy.
RIP Joann, now what?
I wanted to make a post I could copy and paste and or link when I see folks asking where to buy fabrics when Joann is gone. I sew a lot, generally between 100-200 items a year and I don't do it on a big budget. Stores are not in a particular order.
Notions:
Wawak.com - start here, mostly stay here. Wawak is a supplier for professional sewing businesses and have the prices that show it. I will not pay for gutermann Mara 100 anywhere else. I buy buttons, tools, thread, and most elastic here.
Stitch Love Studio - this is where I buy lingerie supplies https://www.etsy.com/shop/StitchLoveStudio?ref=yr_purchases
Fabric:
Fabric Mart - this is one where you want to sign up for emails and never buy unless its on sale. They run different sales every day and they rotate. Mostly deadstock fabrics but I buy more from here than anywhere else. Fantastic customer service and if you watch you can get things like $6 wool suiting or $4 cotton jersey. https://fabricmartfabrics.com/
Fabrics-Store - again, buy the sales not the full price. Sign up for the emails but redirect them to a folder because it is TOO MANY. They stock linen or good but not amazing quality. https://www.fabrics-store.com/
Purple Seamstress - This is where I buy my solid cotton lycra jersey. They have other things, but the jersey is what I'm here for. Inexpensive and very good quality. If you ask she will mail you a swatch card for the solids. https://purpleseamstressfabric.com/
LA Finch - deadstock fabrics with a fantastic remnant selection https://lafinchfabrics.myshopify.com/
Califabrics - mix of deadstock and big brands, easy to navigate and always seem to have good denim in stock. https://califabrics.com/
Boho Fabrics - good variety, nice bundles. I have also gotten some really great trims from here. https://www.bohofabrics.com/
Firecracker Fabrics - garment and quilting fabrics, really nice selection and great sale section. I've bought $5 yard quilting cottons here several times. https://www.firecrackerfabrics.com/
Hancock's of Paducah - Quilting fabric and some limited garment fabric. AMAZING sale section. Do not sleep on the sale section. This is my first stop when buying quilting fabrics. Usually the last stop too. Not particularly speedy shipping. https://www.hancocks-paducah.com/
Itokri - This is something a little different. Itokri is an Indian business with incredible traditional fabrics. Shipping to the US is expensive, but the fabric is so inexpensive it evens out. I generally end up paying like $30 for shipping. Beautiful ikat and block prints. https://itokri.com/
Miss Matatabi - this is a little treat. This isn't where you go to save money, but there are so many beautiful things in this shop. Ships from Japan incredibly quickly. https://shop.missmatatabi.com/
Lucky Deluxe - Craft thrift store, always has an incredible selection and fantastic customer service. I need to close the tab fast because I never go to this website without finding something I need. https://www.luckydeluxefabrics.com/
Swanson's - the OG of online craft thrift stores, but I find their website harder to navigate. https://www.swansonsfabrics.com
Honorary Mentions: I haven't shopped at these places yet but I have had them recommended and likely will at some point.
A Thrifty Notion - https://athriftynotion.com/
Creative Closeouts - https://creativecloseoutsfabric.com/ being rebranded to sewsnip.com on March 1 - quilting deadstock
Hawthorne Supply Co. - I just got this rec and I think I need to not look too closely or I'm going to slip with my debit card. https://www.hawthornesupplyco.com/
This is not an exhaustive list of everywhere you can buy fabric, or even a full list of where I shop. There are SO many options out there in the world. You also need to think outside the fabric store box. I thrift men's shirt fabrics for quilts and sheets for backing fabric. I don't do a ton of in person thrifting and my local stores don't get a lot of craft materials but every thrift store is its own universe and reflects the community it is in. Go out and find something cool.
Oh and final note: Don't shop at Hobby Lobby.
this websiteâs easy watch. *dangles a bunch of greek gods like keys*
i know what iâm doing dw
Keep in mind I only know like. Two Greek gods by name. Homer is one of them, and he was good friends with Odysseus I think?
Wait fuck Homer isnât a god he wrote the fucking thing. Fuck
POST CANCELLED NO ONE LOOK
desperately google searching for âgreek gods to pray to when people notice your online idiocyâ
You're failing.
You donât think I know that, God of Death? Can I pray to you so I can DIE ALREADY
Pluto is Roman, not Greek
?????
Short version is that Pluto is a later name for the god of death, which is often associated with the Roman era/Roman mythology. Hades is the earlier name.
I set up my own house made of sticks and it has promptly fallen on me
HEâS NOT EVEN REAL?????*
I made this post thinking I knew what kind of fire I was playing with. Hephaestus, God of Fire, looking upon me from his fuck off tower or whatever said âOh you think you know? Check this shitâ and promptly set my post ablaze for everyone to observe
Hephaestus doesn't have a tower, he lived in a volcano
FINE THEN. BIG FUCK OFF VOLCANO. WHATEVER
wrong.

You're basically doing the post equivalent of standing out in a field during a storm with a ten-foot copper pole, you better hope Zeus is busy hiding from Hera.
FUCK'S SAKE NOT AGAIN
I need you to name every greek God you know and what they are for plz
For science
OKAY FINE HERE'S WHAT I'VE FOUND
HERMES: DA FUNNY ONE
ZEUS: DA LIGHTNING (NOTE: THOUGHT HE WAS NORDIC, FATHER OF THOR)
POSEIDON: DA SEA ONE
HEPHAESTUS: DA FIRE/FORGING/STEEL ONE
APHRODITE: DA HOT ONE
KRATOS: GOD OF WAR
HADES: DA HELL ONE. ROGUE LIKE
APOLLO: DA DODGEBALL/PROPHECY ONE
ares is the god of war, not kratos
WHY THE FUCK DOES THE GAME CALL HIM GOD OF WAR THEN
I can't believe this post is less than 24 hours old, it feels like something out of classic tumblr lore
It just keeps going. Hey op, would like a shovel to dig that grave a little bit faster?
*yelling out from 12 foot hole* NO THANK YOU
I'm personally offended that you didn't mention Hestia, given how many times I've mentioned her on this post alone, as well as the obvious fact that Hestia is Bestiaâą
Iâm absolutely DYING at the mix up between Zeus and Odin. Can you imagine those two switching places?
MAN FUCJING WHATEVER. LIGHTNING BOYS
you've never heard the story of the Golden Apple of Discord, have you
Oh look, it seems like there's a Republican-led movement to purge voter rolls in the lead-up to the election! It's almost as if your vote matters and they don't want you to vote! Anyway, I whipped up a quick map (based on this) that shows when the voter registration deadline is in each state. There are a few deadlines coming up in the next week or so.
If you live in a state that regularly purges voter rolls for infrequent voters (the orange ones in the first map), or if you moved recently, it's good to check if you're still registered to vote.
Vote.org makes it super easy to check your registration: https://www.vote.org/am-i-registered-to-vote/
Just put in your address and DOB and they'll tell you whether you're registered. (And they give you a quick link to register online if it turns out that you're not! Only the 9 states in white on my map don't have online registration, and for those they provide instructions on how to do it via mail or in person.)
So yeah, give yourself peace of mind -- do a quick check. :)
Quick correction - Minnesota has same day voter registration, so if you aren't registered you can bring proof of residence with you and register when you vote, all the way up to election day, November 5.
Office of the State Of Minnesota Secretary of State
IIRC Michigan also has in-person voter registration up to election day -- you have to go to your county clerk to register past Oct. 21st.

Like what you see? Buy us a coffee!
You'll be happy to know that it is real Assuit. It is heavy as fuck but it was gorgeous in motion.
HOLY SHIT -- THAT'S AMAZING đ€© I've never seen Assuit done on black fabric! Do you know if she used antique textiles, or is someone making it today?
I'm gonna assume no one will remember this, bc I haven't been posting in years and have just been lurking on the same 5 blogs every day because I'm invested in their wellbeing and nosey af, but any of y'all remember how my joints are really fucked up? Well last weekend I dislocated my left kneecap so bad it fractured and also messed up my ligaments and tendons. gold star and future surgery for meeeee.
which sucks because i just started a new job that i absolutely LOVE and now i can't do half of the work because standing for more than a couple minutes hurts like all hell. Sitting also hurts like hell but at least i can't fall over if I'm sitting.
me, untangling pea vines off each other so I can weave them into the trellis instead: Let go, you codependent little bastards. You'll find no support from each other. Accept professional help.
me, unwinding a green bean vine from where it grabbed onto a tomato cage: look I know that you THINK you've found support, but all you've found is a temporary stop-gap that's is going to fail and ultimately shape you in ways I can't help you recover from. Let go and please climb the pole next to you instead.
Waiting for the day this happens to me.
This is still my favorite comic to date.
Every time I see this it makes me happy
Reblog if you are not a clever man
A mark on your forehead identifies the god you must worship to stay alive, usually by joining its local church or temple. Your mark is unknown, meaning an old, forgotten god sponsored you. To survive, you must either find an old temple to worship at, or do the arduous task of building a new one
Nobody in your small coastal village has ever seen the Godmark that you were born with. Itâs a dark russet sequence of criss-crossing lines, with a vertical arrowhead on the left and a circle on the right, just over where your brow meets your temple. Some of the traders who come down from the mountain say it looks like one of the scripts used in the hinterlands, but not a language that any of them recognize.
âIf sheâs got the temperament for it, she should try her luck inland,â they advise. âNo point her starting a temple here if sheâd find her people elsewhere, with a little searching.â
At first, your parents are reluctant to send you away. Though youâre well-behaved and diligent in your chores, youâre a sickly child with no God to worship. And besides, youâve always been the dreamy typeâinclined to lose track of time watching the path of rain droplets chasing down the window, or the fronds of an anemone as it sways in a rock pool.
Instead, they send you to the temple of the Storm to learn all youâll need for your own God. You are happy there, for a time: making up beds and serving food to the castaways who pass through, keeping vigil at the lighthouse, burning incense and praying with the loyal widows and orphans of the drowned.
One such widow, an old, old lady, touches the mark on your forehead. âI recognise those letters. We wrote this way in the town where I grew up, way off past the mountains.â
Your heartbeat quickens. âWhat does it say!?â
She squints, eyes engulfed by wrinkles and hidden behind smudged glass. âA⊠Ar⊠Oh, I canât remember how to speak it. I left before I learnt my letters properly. There was a war, you know. But I remember,â she says, mistily, âthe most beautiful pink and white flowers used to grow, on the borders of the wheat fieldsâŠâ
You try to ask more questions, but remembering the war distresses her, and so you speak of other things. When sheâs drifted off to sleep, you get to your feet, go home and tell your parents: you are leaving in search of your God.
I'm most certainly just yelling into the void here, but I'm moving in a few weeks and it is STRESSIN' ME TF OUT. This is the first time in my life that I'll be moving 100% - not just for college, but out for good with all of my stuff and I am realizing how many moving parts that is and I am overwhelmed. Still think I'm chugging along pretty well, all things considered, but still.
It doesn't help that I'm also having to refinish several pieces of furniture in order TO move. And sell off a bunch of my shit that I don't need/use/have space for but is also too valuable to just donate.
Like I said. Stressin'.
