Light never liked sweets much, but he completely stops eating sugar after L’s death because it reminds him too much of the taste of L’s lips.

Perhaps one time Misa tries to kiss him after eating some sort of dessert. Instead of tasting pleasant and inviting, leaving him craving more as L once had, Misa tastes sickeningly sweet; so much so that it leaves him feeling nauseated.

He refuses to touch sugar after that… with the exception of October 31st, when he goes to what had once been L’s favourite bakery and buys a single slice of strawberry cake to eat alone. Bitter tears mix with saccharine frosting as he reflects on what could’ve been.

“Tell me, Light, from the moment you were born have you ever told the truth?” -L

This question digs at me. It implies that L believes Light was a liar even before he was Kira. From the moment you were born. As if there were something wrong with Light from the start, a flaw that has nothing to do with Kira per se. It cuts deeper for that, like his previous statement to a memoryless Light that yes, L could see Light doing the things Kira did. L believes that even without the presence/influence/use of the Death Note, Light was always capable of being someone like Kira.

But does anyone remember everything from the moment they were born? Do even the most practiced liars never tell the truth? Is L really suggesting that Light lied as a child and that L didn’t? That L, as an adult, didn’t constantly lie? Of course not, and L knows this. He’s holding Light’s truthfulness to a higher standard than he holds himself. It’s hyperbole. So why does he ask it?

Maybe it’s a flail of desperation. L is lashing out and posing a question he knows is nonsensical and cannot be answered. The question is only meant to hurt Light, to jab at him because L has no other weapons left. It’s childish and petty, but then, that’s L. And in the asking of it, L shows us one last time how much he hates to lose.

But maybe it’s less of a jab or a flail than a statement about them both. Perhaps L is asking (in a dramatic emo way) if Light even values truth. Taken literally, it would be ironic because L thwarts truth so many times as well, in both his words and actions. But if we accept that L knows full well that he is also a liar, the question may be— tell me, why don’t we value truth, and to the point that lying becomes so easy it feels like it’s all we’ve ever done? Since the moment we were born...
