Kingdom Hearts!
This is the first year we have had context for the singer of the 12 days of Christmas. Obviously the only people who would give so many birds as gifts are Lord Squak Airavis, Earl of Peckersberg, and Lady Chirp Featherfowl, Countess of Cluckingham.
The main difference between the weather being uncomfortably cold, and the weather being uncomfortably hot, is that the things you can do in the cold to warm yourself up (hot food/beverage, blankets, cuddles, nice clothes like sweaters, thick scarves and snazzy jackets, getting exercise) are very pleasant and very effective, and the things you can do in the heat to cool yourself down don't do shit.
thinking about the ethics of prophecy and its role as a narrative tool of coercion and control again
like. if you're beholden to a set of conditions that must either be followed or subverted in order to produce a favourable outcome or avoid unfavourable consequences (or led to believe you are), subject to the decree of a higher authority whose statements you are expected to accept as the absolute, unbiased, factual truth, and structure your existence in accordance with, is that not just prison? you can't convince me that isn't just an elaborate psychologically abusive prison.
what if your doppelgänger wasn’t evil it was just a person. what if your doppelgänger wasn’t trying to replace you it was just trying to learn to be a person and you were the best model it had. what if your doppelgänger looked at you with your eyes and said with your voice that it just wanted to be loved. what then.

My boyfriend @aborigonalguppyrabits and I were discussing cosmere reading order and decided that it was best expressed as a flow chart. The project got a little out of hand. Obviously there’s no right way to read the books, but we thought we’d offer our solution.
Kaladin and Syl's dance might be one of my favourite scenes in Wind and truth. The way she changed from spear to spren form, and how they had a great time just for the sake of being together, not thinking about war or the mission they were on, both of them choosing to do it because they simply love each other. And the fact that the Wind felt it and made the music play on Kaladin's flute. It's just so wholesome and lovely, and it made me tear up a bit. They've both been fighting for so long and helping other people, but that moment was just for them, and it was magical.
Lae'zel's character and her entire situation at the beginning of the game becomes so much more funny when you find out she's 22. It makes so much sense. Imagine you're 22 and you're exposed to this dangerous toxin or chemical or something - but not to worry, you learnt that this can be easily fixed, you just need to dial 911 real quick. Common knowledge. Everyone knows that. You learnt that in kindergarten, it's up there with fire alarm drills.
But the people you're stuck with have no concept of modern medicine and when you say "let's go to the hospital" they will say shit like "i think they kill people at the hospital" and "we should ask this swamp lady" or "this guy over there told me about this homoeopathic healer kind of guy but he got abducted" or "this random bard wants to help" and "I'm not going to dial 911 because I don't want the government to know my home address" or "maybe we should consider a deal with Satan". And then a bunch of them KEEP consuming the chemical because it makes them "stronger". One guy might explode for unrelated reasons. You have a few days before this situation is getting critical and suddenly they're solving crime and doing general charity for the community.
And FOR SOME REASON you still try to help these idiots and you STILL want to help them get the cure even though they all keep insisting the "doctors" at the "hospital" might try to "kill them" and they don't have insurance. And you keep telling them to just. go. to. the. hospital. before the time runs out and you all die very horribly of a very treatable condition.
And also you're 22 in a foreign country and you're responsible for shepherding this gaggle of idiots who are all ranging anywhere from 24 to 240 years old.
And the funniest part of all of it is they were right. You show up and the hospital tries to kill you.
I was nattering at Best Beloved earlier this morning about how one of the more amusing parts of the Wild Magic series, for me, is how long it takes Ozorne to realize that Daine is actually a threat.
Because sure, Daine is at Pirate’s Swoop, but so are Numair and Alanna, and she doesn’t do anything flashy…except summon a kraken, and then it’s Numair and Alanna who send the kraken away, so it’s reasonable to assume they summoned it in the first place.
And then sure, Daine is at Dunlath, but so is Numair (and later Alanna), and it’s Numair doing all the flashy things like ringing the shield like a bell and turning people into apple trees.
And also Ozorne has a bit of a fixation on Numair, so it’s probably pretty easy for him to disregard reports on weird squirrels.
And then when she gets to Carthak, she’s this shy little bird-healer who rescues drowning marmosets, and Numair and Alanna are right there and much flashier, and I’m pretty sure Ozorne thinks of Daine as being sort of…mildly entertaining. She’d make a good pet.
…And then of course he kills “Numair.” But Ozorne doesn’t actually know Daine can cause a zombie dinosaur rampage, mostly because Daine didn’t know that either, and so I suspect he doesn’t figure out it’s Daine behind all of this until pretty late in the hyena scene, honestly.
His assessment of her threat level must go from “1/10, rather amusing” to “11/10, extremely fucking dangerous” in about 30 seconds.
I don’t know why this is hilarious to me, but it very much is.
#honestly yeah#tortall#she’s such a powerhouse#and so respected by the established powerhouses (bc they’re cool people who don’t patronize)#that it’s almost easy to forget that ozorne just….doesn’t know who she is#or like. he’s surely heard of her#spies no doubt reported when the random girl with animal powers started getting chummy with numair et al#but that’s all she seems to be from the outside – a young girl who talks to animals#mildly entertaining as op says#collectable#definitely not someone who could charm the Crone so much that she’d get surprise dinosaur necromancy#just when you’ve gone and pissed her off for good
viennaphilharmonic 🛠️ The famous Mahler hammer! 🎶
This is the famous hammer blow from Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 6—a dramatic symbol of fate and destiny. What cannot be conveyed through notes alone, Mahler expresses with this powerful gesture.

There’s this guy in town who owns this little house, and a while back he rescued a street dog that was going to get put down. Turned out she was pregnant.
Problem is, he has mental health & drug issues and couldn’t afford to get them all spayed & neutered, so now there are 6 grown bitches with 15 puppies total, and they’ve dug under his fence in multiple places but he can’t afford to fix it so they go roaming all around town. (When I say can’t afford it, I mean his house is currently running on a generator because he can’t afford his electric bill.) He’s also a day laborer so he cannot take multiple full days off work to take them to the vet an hour away. He’s in a really rough spot.
He’s not a bad person. He’s just overwhelmed.
And this little conservative town with 6 churches for 300 people, have they tried to help their neighbor? Have they adopted the puppies he’s been trying to give away? Have they offered resources?
NOPE! All they wanna do is talk shit about him and complain about the dogs but never lift a finger of their own. And they come to his house to yell at him and cuss him out about the dogs, which does not exactly engender in him a cooperative attitude, as you might imagine.
So after a while of this going on, my mom gets fed up with all the NIMBY bullshit and starts talking to the guy, because she’s done animal rescue for 20-odd years and has Connections. He’s resistant at first, but when he realizes she’s not being an asshole to him on account of his addiction or the dogs, he decides to let her help.
She gets to work organizing and networking. Finds a non-profit that will cover vaccinations, spay/neuter, and flea treatments for all the dogs. Talks the next-door neighbor into paying for materials to fix the fence, since this guy can do the work of it himself. Gets him in touch with another non-profit that will adopt out the adult dogs.
Less than 2 weeks after she decided to do something, all puppies have been to the vet, 10 puppies and 4 adult dogs have been adopted out, and the second non-profit is coming by next week to pick up the remaining 7 dogs to ship them out for adoption.
I’ve learned a lot of things from my mom—some good, some bad—but I think the most important positive message she lives as an example of is this: sometimes, when something needs done and no one else is willing, you gotta stand up and say “I’ll do it.”
The most mind-blowing revelation I received on this lesson happened to me when I was in college.
I was driving along a mountain road with a person I kinda knew in the passenger seat (like a roommate of a roommate or something). The road was very narrow, very twisty-turny, steep cliffs on both sides. I came around a blind curve to see a huge tree branch in the road. I managed to swerve just in time to avoid it, and also not veer the car into the sheer cliff face going up on the left, or of the sheer cliff face going down on the right.
"That's so dangerous. Someone should move that." I said.
"You're someone." said my passenger.
I very slowly pressed the brakes, my car slowly rolling to a stop as what he'd said started to sink in to my brain.
It had never occurred to be before, in all my life, that I could be the "someone" who could fix the thing. Not ever.
It was dangerous to stop here. If another car came, they could easily hit me, as it was a blind curve. We talked about it, decided it was worth the risk to possibly save a life, and we quickly ran to the branch and moved it to the side as best we could, then hurried back to the car.
It changed my life. After that, every time I have the thought "Someone should _____", I now hear that voice. I'm 'someone'. Now I evaluate whether I'm able to do something about a situation- that doesn't mean I always can! Sometimes I truly don't have the energy, knowledge, or time or money to fix something. But I should at least think about doing it myself- consider that I could, and weigh the options, which I never did before that moment.
