My background in fitness is sloppy at best. I played basketball all through out middle school, and played street hockey religiously through out middle school and high school. Some how I was still the active but overweight kid. Well, not some how, my Mom's most excellent old school cooking is what did me in.
Somehow when I went to college, everyone else gained weight while I lost weight. I'll chalk that up to the tons of walking I did and zero money to buy food. I look back at old pictures of myself and they are quite embarrassing. But in and just after college I saw pictures of myself as crazy thin. Oddly enough, I really don't remember being thin, my mind still says I was over weight. Yeah, it's warped. So I got an IT job, sat at a desk, ate tons of fast food, and hit the dreaded 200 pound mark. Oddly enough, being 200 pounds is a current goal of mine, but not at 30% BF.
So, I got a trainer. Mind you, this was approaching a decade ago, she kicked my ass, she was awesome. She yelled at me and expected me to yell right back. When my food journal wasn't near perfect, we went outside and did suicide sprints until I vomited. I dropped the weight, became a little stronger and healthier. Then I quit the gym, and went right back to where I was.
For the last two years I've been in and out of the gym, consistent for a few months, then after not liking the results, quit for a month or two, then got back up and did it again. You know the game. It seems like everyone has the same story.
Currently, I'm 4 weeks in to a new program, and the results are making me really happy. I haven't changed much of what I've done in the past just grouped my exercises differently, and gained ideas and support from the awesome community at fitocracy. Lokkju over there really helped to fine tune what I've been doing.
My weight has been pretty stable, I dropped 15 pounds, and am hovering between 183 and 189, it fluctuates weekly it seems. This is do to calories, water weight, etc. The main thing that really has me geeked is my strength. In a matter of 4 weeks, my gains have been awesome. I've never experienced this in my workout travels. I'm not using any crazy supplements or anything right now, just trying to be as consistent as possible with my workouts and my calorie in take.
One thing I'm horrible at, mainly because it's boring and a pain in the ass is watching my nutrition. I eat well, I don't eat like crap. My diet should consist of 40/40/30 for protein/carbs/fat. I think I'm fairly close to that without actually tracking it in detail (I did for the first two weeks). I really should be better about it. My own little personal experiment is to workout, and eat healthy without counting calories, protein, etc. To just know what I need to eat and not think about it. The goal is to workout, get fit, and NOT micro manage my nutrition. Why should I waste so much time doing so. I think if I generally eat well, it will work out. So far, so good.
This long winded post is really about me just getting over the hump and staying positive. I really enjoy my workouts. Everyday something different is going on at our house, between work, school, and the kids, it's crazy. But the one thing I know that's always the same is that I can go downstairs and hit the iron, no matter what time it is, no matter how busy we are, I can always manage to fit it in.
