Absolutely buckwild thread of ChatGPT feeding & amplifying delusions, causing the user to break with reality. People are leaning on ChatGPT for therapy, for companionship, for advice... and it's fucking them up.

Reminder that this can happen to anyone who uses chatGPT and similar for everyday conversations and companionship. Don't rely on genAI for therapy or life advice.

The human brain is extremely good at seeing patterns where there are none, and at attributing emotions and motive to things that do not have them. We anthropomorphise animals and even objects. We give names to our roombas. That's what we do. It's not at all surprising that people start to think chatGPT has 'awakened' and cares for them. It is still incorrect, and it is dangerous.

ChatGPT will mirror the person talking to it, because that's how it is trained. If you treat it like a loved one, it will also treat you with an imitation of love. And if you feed it esotericism, it may amplify them into delusions. That last example in the post shows this perfectly.

Don't start relying on chatGPT when you should talk to a person - a loved one, a therapist, whoever. Don't let it become a habit.
